Gret to see some action in the media November 12, 2007 2:04 PM

I picked up a bookmark and a little booklet in the library today and am delighted to say that they are encouraged tree planting.

The book is called 'Tree Party' pocket guide.

I'm really delighted and grateful to see tree planting being encouraged in the media.

Don't laugh, but I even wash out my zip lock bags that I use for my lunches at work!
Far too much plastic in the world as it is.  All the 'waste' computer paper at work comes home for my 2yr old grand daughter to draw on, then into my recycle bin.  I just wish I had some way to recycle my old food cans - the recycle people will take aluminium but not tin cans.

Also, I hope everyone smashes everything down before throwing it away - taking bottoms off cans to squish them flat, folding down boxes before putting them in the rubbish - not really recycling, but at least cutting down on the size of the stuff thrown away.

Recycle! January 07, 2006 9:18 AM

It made me sick to my stomach when a man I formerly at least semi-respected, an educated, high school Algebra II teacher told me that Recycling was an inconvenience.  I promptly told him that he was an inconvenience to the world and I am in the process of using old boxes, etc to create recycle bins for paper and plastic for all of my classrooms that don't have them.

I also recycle everything from old tissue paper rolls to candy wrappers to old school folders and use them in my art work!  [ send green star]  [ accepted]

Hi Boris,

I use old planks to make gates and shed doors, i use bits of wood to wedge doors back, i used to cut shapes of off cut wood and smooth them down and decoupage them. In the skips you can find pallets and i used to make then into a gangway for the barge i used to live on and some planks i would break off and cut length ways for a line prop and groove the top. Other lengths were useful to keep the barge into position on an outgoing tide.

Hiya,

we use empty loo rolls to make robots, all paper is used both sides and when colouring in we make it into wrapping paper.

We make all our cards for friends and family from already recycled paper. All stamps go to "The Downs Syndrome Society" along with the printer cartridges, which help bring in money for a cause i totally support as my little girl is Downs Syndrome and totally irresitible and all mine lol .

Any pebbles and shells we find we wash and sterilise and put into the fishtank too.

Thanx! July 23, 2005 11:43 PM

I use new shoe boxes to store stuff ! Than decorate them with all different kinds of paper products!

I re-use large sports drink jugs to feed my plants outside, and to water my animals, they're so handy and have durable plastic handles, perfect for fitting over the mouth of my spicket ; to hang there and collect water 'till full! Also these jugs;cut in half, have made a terrific scoop and funnel  for bird seed!

Bottom of the tea kettle water that is cool and no longer its freshest for tea; is poured off into a glass container to be watering for indoor plant life.

I incorperate many of said ideas of others here also, and thanks for now i have new ideas!  to you!

Save the Catskill Forest Preserve July 22, 2005 3:52 PM

Tell Governor Pataki not to allow a massive resort development to be built within historic Catskill Park.

There is a proposal being reviewed by the state Department of Environmental Conservation to build the massive Belleayre Resort development within the historic Catskill Park.

The construction and operation of the Belleayre Resort development would jeopardize world-famous trout streams with runoff and pollution; strain local roadways, water sources and the Catskill Forest Preserve; and lead to secondary growth and development that would degrade the Catskills watershed ecosystem and threaten the drinking water supply of nine million New Yorkers.

(2) Protect the Future of the Great Bear Rainforest

When you imagine a fairytale enchanted forest, with towering cedar trees, soaring eagles and mythic creatures, you could be picturing Canada’s Great Bear Rainforest. Home to the Spirit Bear, grizzly bears and hundreds of other forest creatures great and small, the Great Bear Rainforest is the largest intact coastal temperate rainforest left on Earth. But there may not be a fairytale ending for this unique forest.

Over the last decade, world attention to this region has brought together a cast of characters from industry, environmental groups, communities and workers to agree on a solution for the future of this great forest. Now it's time for the government of British Columbia to implement this agreement to protect one-third of the region from logging and create a new approach to forest management.

Tell the Premier of British Columbia to seize this moment in time for the future of the Great Bear Rainforest.

Stop Logging Old-Growth Forests July 22, 2005 3:12 PM

There aren't many places in the U.S. where you can visit reserves of old-growth forest. And there will be even fewer places soon, thanks to the largest logging operation in modern history, brought to you by the U.S. Forest Service. Old-growth logging has begun in the Biscuit timber sale, located in the Siskiyou National Forest in southern Oregon, even though there are challenges to its legality.

The Forest Service is logging ancient forest stands and roadless areas on almost 20,000 acres of forest. Soon, a district court will rule on the legality of the logging. Please insist that the Forest Service immediately halt the logging of old-growth reserves in the Siskiyou and allow full judicial review.

This month, the long-awaited release of the latest Harry Potter book will hit the nation's shelves. Many readers of every age are excited to learn the secrets in store for Harry Potter, but the book's publisher, Scholastic, has another secret it doesn't want you to know: Its books will not be printed on recycled paper. We have some magic up our sleeves too - a link to the Canadian publishers of Harry Potter and the Half Blood Prince, who can send you a tree-friendly version of this popular book.

Take Action >> Work your magic on Scholastic! Send it a letter notifying it that you will buy your copy of Harry Potter and the Half Blood Prince from its Canadian rivals, who have already agreed to print the book on 100% recycled paper.

Buy the Book >> Order your copy of the latest Harry Potter straight from Canada.

recycling trees June 26, 2005 4:13 AM

i have some 100 year old timber furniture, and i figure, if i keep it in good condition, i will never have to require a new tree to be cut down to replace it.

i also scavenge timber from houses being wrecked, and timber that has been left lying around and has aged, to make more furniture, to slow down the requirements of others to purchase new timber furniture, and therefore reduce the demand on new trees being cut.

the tools i use are simple - a saw, a sander, and a drill -- usually using tech screws to hold it together.

i make simple shelving [sometimes using discarded glass as shelves], outdoor tables and benches, blanket boxes from fence palings and posts, and clothes racks from broken broom handles with forked branches for legs.

does anyone else have any ideas on how to recycle timber?

Use the unprinted backs of incoming mail for a free telephone message page.

All you need is:

A peice of thick card ( A5 ish size)
A large bulldog clip
Waste A4 paper torn in half: old corresponce etc.

Place paper on card unprinted side up and hold together with clip, put by phone for message pad, or use as a priority list or note pad.
Tis easy to make and easy to use.

Every little action helps...creative ideas for recycling at home April 18, 2005 8:09 AM

Free Address Labels...
(plus security measure)
All you need is a glue stick.
Cut your name address off incoming mail and use your glue stick to use them as labels. (+++letters you send for recycling will no longer have your name and address on for the benefit of identity fraudsters).
