http://www.wcs.org/ It's hard not to fall prey to the charms of baby orangutans, with their sweet faces and huge dark eyes. That's part of the reason that orangutans are at risk of going extinct in the wild. Baby orangutans are so appealing that they are illegally captured and sold as pets. At the same time, rapid, unchecked development is destroying the forests where their parents and relatives live. It's a deadly combination. The U.S. government funds effective programs to save these clever, gentle animals, but deep budget cuts are jeopardizing these critical programs. Tell your members of Congress to restore funding that protects orangutan. Orangutans are restricted to dwindling areas of remote forest on the islands of Borneo and Sumatra. Each year, their habitats are shrinking as the forests are felled and replaced with oil palm plantations and other forms of development. There are proven ways that we can protect these creatures. U.S. Agency for International Development (USAID) Biodiversity programs directly address the source of the problems facing orangutans by: Putting behind bars the black-market wildlife traders who capture and sell orangutans and other wild animals; Working on the ground to reduce illegal logging and promote selective logging techniques that maintain orangutan habitat in a relatively intact state; and Empowering local communities to manage their forests in responsible ways that protect the animals that live there.
Thank You RC! Message sent.
You cannot currently send a star to RC because you have done so within the last week.
TY & Sorry RC - looks like US only.
Thank you Michaela for letting me know that, was not sure if that was case or not, but now we know... thanks again.
Were you aware that there are 2 young Girl Scouts in Oregon fighting to change cookie ingredients so that they don't use products that are grown in areas that destroy orangutan environments? I heard them interviewed last year and don't know how well they succeeded. Hope their cries and petitions were acknowledged!
Thanks for the info.
Action taken, thank you.
Orangutans are notoriously solitary creatures... so who would have guessed they have so many friends? Just in the past few days, we sent an astounding 47,372 letters to our members of Congress, urging them to continue the USAID Biodiversity programs that protect these clever great apes. (Thanks again!)
But today, I'm hoping that we can all pitch in a little to make even more noise about how important it is to save orangutans: let's get 32,628 more letters (that's 80,000 total!) to Congress in the next few days.
I'm sending this to a few of my friends and family, and I hope that you will too. Just forward the email below to any of your friends, coworkers, or family that care about wildlife. I know that together, we can continue the programs that keep orangutans alive.
Thanks everybody for helping the orangutans.
and Sheila S. No was not aware of those two girl scouts but that is a very wonderful thing that they are doing. I love it when younger people are in the mix too, fighting for the animals. Like to see the passion bloom at an early age for them. Thanks so much for that interesting tidbit, Sheila!!
LOVE these little guys! Oh, and the BIG ones, too!
Love them too!!! Its a shame mankind drives them to extiction

All done thank you Monika and RC.
Monika, you are a petition finder par excellence'!! That is the "mother lode" of orangutan petitions!! THANK YOU SO MUCH!!! We signed all the ones that were still open to sign. And I appreciate very much how you have enhanced this page with all these chances to speak out for Green's kinfolks. Excellent!!
Love them too!!! Its a shame mankind drives them to extiction.
Well at the rate we're going mankind is driving itself into extinction.
Like I said, one species cannot exist if the ones it depends for survival, which mankind has forgotten, go extinct before them. Even the demise of the Bumblebee will cause dire straits for "mankind".
I agree RC... "the mother lode".
Thank You Monika!!!!!!!

You are so right, Steven... one small change affects us all.. Butterfly Effect in play!!
I just LOVE Bumblebees.. did you know they are the only bee that can turn off their buzz?? yep, they can fly quiet when they want too, isnt that amazing?? it truly is considering that according to NASA, they do not have the aerodynamics to be flying at all!! They said that with that wide load body and those tiny wings, they should NOT be able to lift off at all.. But only one thing, nobody told the humble bumble that, so he flew anyways.. and then, he decided to fly quiet at times too. I say hurray for the Humble Bumble that Could!!
DONE! Nature in itself is very cruel, MAN just makes it HELL!
signed all that are still open, thanks everyone
signed all available.
Raymond, how true that is!! It is tough enough, this thing called life and when others set out to harm, then comes Dante's levels of hell! But, I think Dante would be surprised to find that man did not stop at 9 levels!! Again, all the more reason for us to remember to keep our thinking caps on and act purposefully each and every day!! There is no time for coasting through, the battle rages each and every day!!
sorry could not signed... (

Rare Sumatran orangutans dying as fires rage in Indonesian swamp forest
A third of the population of 200 might already be dead ? with the remainder in
severe danger, say conservationists
Thank you Monika, I had just gotten in some info on this too. How absolutely vile that they are trying to burn it all down so there is nothing to protect once the new laws come to bear. There are no new words to give to the world's fresh evils, but then there is no need for new words. WRONG is as wrong on Tuesday as it is on Monday. We just have to keep saying it.
Thank you Monika

Give a Wake Up Call to Cargill
The Tripa forest of Sumatra, home to Indigenous communities and critical to the survival of endangered Sumatran orangutans, is still in peril from the landclearing fires started by palm oil companies in March. U.S. agribusiness giant Cargill, trader of 25% of the world's palm oil, can make a difference by adopting the safeguards necessary to guarantee that rainforests, communities and critical habitat for endangered species are not destroyed through its palm oil business.
Please take five minutes out of your day to pick up the phone and give Cargill this major wake up call. Then let us know how the call went by filling out the fields below. Please remember to be cordial so that the employee will engage in the most useful dialogue possible.
Mary Maurelli, Cargill Spokeswoman
If you get the employee’s voicemail, state your concerns candidly or use this sample script:
"Hi. I'm calling because I'm concerned about the the tragic fires that were recently started by palm oil companies in the Tripa forest of Sumatra. They have threatened the survival of local and Indigenous communities and many endangered species like Sumatran orangutans. Cargill trades 25% of the world's palm oil, so I'd like to encourage Cargill to refuse to purchase palm oil from all companies connected to the Tripa fires and to adopt the additional safeguards necessary on the palm oil it trades to guarantee that it is not profiting from situations like the destruction of the Tripa forest. Please take swift action. Thank you!"
If s/he answers, say:
"Hi. I'm calling because I'm concerned about the the tragic fires that were recently started by palm oil companies in the Tripa forest of Sumatra. They have threatened the survival of local and Indigenous communities and many endangered species like Sumatran orangutans. Cargill trades 25% of the world's palm oil, so I'm eager to know:
Will Cargill adopt the additional safeguards necessary on the palm oil it trades to guarantee that it is not profiting from situations like the destruction of the Tripa peat forest?"
DEAR CARE2 FRIENDS THAT ARE FIGHTING FOR US,
WE ARE CLINGING TO THE HOPE THAT YOUR ACTIONS GIVE US!
THANK YOU AND PLEASE DONT GIVE UP!
WITH ALL OUR LOVE,
THE ORANGUTANS OF THE WORLD
Thank you Monika for the opp to meow on this one too. It will take all of us protesting the use, or the overuse I should say, of Palm Oil in so many of our foods that are processed in order for these companies to feel the dent in their pocketbooks. It will take us telling all of them, "NO, we dont want this stuff in our foods, the cost is too high, we can taste the blood of the rainforest in this food and it turns our stomach. NO!!" It is not like this is the only thing they could use in the foods, it is just simply what they will use as long as people buy it that way. We must let the word out that palm oil runs red with the blood of the rainforests!!
Thank you. Shared.

Orangutans Smarter Than Previously Thought: Orangutan Nest Building Highly Sophisticated
Scientists at The University of Manchester spent a year observing and filming orangutans at a research facility in Indonesia and found they apparently possess complex knowledge of mechanical design and material properties.
The great apes -- which only live wild in Sumatra and Borneo and are one of man's closest relatives -- build large, oval nests in tree canopies every day where they sleep overnight, possibly for protection from predators and parasites or for warmth during sleep.
for sure, I could not build a nest like that! Thank you Monika!
Everything signed and tweeted. I am out and about frequently and everywhere I go I address the plight of the orangutans and their needless deaths due to man's greed for palm oil. I'm hearing strangers on the street join in and tell me that palm oil is in EVERYTHING and that they will stop using these products to save these beautiful creatures. I have not encountered even one person who does not care about them. Their beautiful, gentle little faces have won the hearts of so many. I tell everyone about Care2 and Michela's group ORANGUTANS: Men of the Forest. They are one of my favorites in this world and I don't want us to lose them. They are wonderful as a species and the sweetest little individuals you could ever hope to know. They beat most people in a personality contest anyday.
This is so very sad. How could anyone beat these beautiful creatures? There is something seriously wrong with people. Anyone who could even watch someone hurt them is a heartless monster, too bad people like that aren't endangered.
Monika, merci' for the wonderful story about their nest building. I just love to watch nature shows for the very reason that so much ingenuity exists in the animal kingdom. Just like us, they have to use their noggins to survive day to day. I think that many a human would fall through a nest that they attempted to construct in the trees for sleeping!! So, tis no small feat they do!
Lenicka, dank u for the story too. It is heartbreaking to read the tragedy that is occuring every single minute in the rainforests of this planet, a tragic cycle that leads to death on all sides, plants, animals and even man (his soul if not his body)! My heart just goes out to these sweet men of the forest who are being displaced. Very sad that this mommy orang died too. But, that REDD project idea sounds like it holds a lot of promise for these countries so I pray that it gets passed and sanctioned at the Climate conference, for the sake of all living beings, esp the orangs.
and Lydia, YAHOO to you and your band wagon for the Orangs!! They need a wonderful ambassador like YOU!!! Go Girl Go!!
Thank you Monika, this one signed too. orang hugs to you.
