GuideStar ~ The Nonprofit "Bible" January 22, 2007 11:43 AM

http://www.guidestar.com lists every single valid non-profit in the U.S.

We do not add ourselves to this organizations list of non-profits and I can only assume they get their information from the IRS.

We recently noted we were listed there and are working to upgrade our listing so that it reflects what we are doing, instead of only having information submitted to the IRS for 501(c)3 nonprofit status.

Charity Navigator is the only independent auditor of the efficiency of charities.  I have visited with them in NJ and I am very comfortable with their independence and their process.  We pay them an annual fee to evaluate which charities qualify to receive funds from us through www.clickshopsupport.org.  Their website also has a remarkably informative as well as concise and consistent summary of each charity they review.  Unlike Guidestar, which is comprehensive and covering over 1.2 million nonprofits, many of which are inactive, Charity Navigator covers a little over 5,000 with a penetrating and analytical report.  [report anonymous abuse]
