Wow, this is my first Question of the Week since May.  Yikes, I was really slacking, and I'm extremely sorry about that.  I feel like I can't apologize enough for my absence.  So I thought that I'd make the first question since my return allow me to see what everyone is interested in the realm of bears' welfare, environment, and so on.  I look forward to hearing your answers and will make note of them for future discussions.

What issue is of most concern to you when it comes to bears?

Thanks to everyone for your patience.  Take care now.

I think the fact that most people tend to see the bear as a zoo animal rather than a wild creature these days upsets me somewhat. Lack of understanding/information within the general public, tends to lead to the attitude that bears live in zoo's, not the wild, so they dont need land, etc.  [ send green star]  [ accepted]

Well where to start..

Firstly, bears being said to be "nuisance bears" in the states, when in fact it is caused by human ignorance ie leaving garbage outside of houses. The bear then gets shot.

Also bile farming, bears in captivity and dancing bears. Worldwide bears are being exploited and it makes me so mad.

Polar Bears June 06, 2006 8:11 PM

I am extremely concerned about the fate of polar bears. It seems that climate change is almost certain to eliminate these wonderful creatures and I am afraid that even if the will to do what is necessary to solve the problem were there (such will seems to be lacking for the most part), it would be too late for the bears. I often wonder what might be done directly (short of locking as many as possible up in zoos) to save these magnificent beasts.   [ send green star]  [ accepted]

Main concerns about bears May 27, 2007 10:33 PM

I have 2 major concerns:
(1) The possible extinctiion of polar bears due to trophy hunters, global warming, oil exploration and sheer ignorance.

To help with the last one (sheer ignorance) I've created Are You Polar Bear Aware? to show people these magnificent animals in all their glory and make them aware of the problems they face (all income is split 50/50 between National Wildlife Federation and Polar Bear International) and a blog Polar Bear News where I post news and updates about polar bears in the wild and in zoos; petitions; photos, etc. In my blog, I am currently doing a series of posts introducing people to the other 7 bear species.

Although today my blog is on Maggie, the elephant at the Alaska Zoo because Tuesday, May 29, the zoo board directors are going to vote on whether to send her to an Elephant Sanctuary or not. Please if you haven't already contacted the zoo directors, check out my blog to get all the information and send an appeal immediately. There is lots of info there to help you write a message and all contact data. If you already know about Maggie but haven't sent your comment/plea yet send the email to: directors@alaskazoo.org.

(2) My second greatest concern is the hunting, caging and milking of bile or killing bears for their body parts. I am absolutely horrified at this level of barbarism!

I am soooo very happy to have found Care2 and this wonderful group to help me in my quest to save bears! Thank you, thank you, thank you!

Bear hugs, Frankie

survival of polar bears November 11, 2007 4:51 AM

Dear members,

Hello, I am new here! So I would like to write an idea concerning the decreasing number of ice bears. As we know, the survival of the polar bears is depending on the ice that is unfortunately melting more and more away. I think that something must be done to give these animals a chance to survive. As mankind will not be able to stop the decrease of polar ice, the bears need to be offered another way of life in another place. Has anyone an idea what to do?
