Origin & History of Boycott December 04, 2004 9:27 AM

In the wake of the famine, English landlordism reigned supreme in Ireland. In 1879, Michael Davitt founded the Irish national Land League with Charles Stewart Parnell -- a constitutional nationalist -- as it s president. The objects of the Land League were: 1] To put an end to rank-renting, evictions and landlord oppression; 2] To effect such a radical change in the land system as would put it in the power of every Irish farmer to become the owner, in fair terms, of the land he tilled.

In the course of the land war a new word was coined--Boycott--when the land of a Captain Boycott, a rack-renting landlord who refused to accept the fair rents, was shunned by all the people in the surrounding areas.

In 1881, under unrelenting pressure, a land act had guaranteed the three "Fs" as they were known: fair rent, free sale, and fixity of tenure.

The land war changed the face of rural Ireland by putting an end to the old system of landlordism, although British political rule still remained as imperious as ever.

Very interesting! December 04, 2004 12:14 PM

Thanks for sharing.  I'm always interested in where our words come from.

As for landlords, too many are just scummy.  They see nothing wrong in renting out (for much too high a price) rat holes that they wouldn't be caught dead living in.

Thanks Ross! Michelle can't let your comment go by I think that the scum lords who rent out nasty property to people who have no financial choice should be more than ashamed! What do you think, they should have to live in the place for a month or until made habitable?!! Anyway I had to throw my 2 cents in w/yours!  I know it's not specifically boycott thread!  [ send green star]

Hey, TM! December 13, 2004 3:16 PM

Did you ever see the movie "The Super" with Joe Peschi?  That is exactly what it is about.  A landlord who is just as scummy as can be gets arrested and charged with something connected with his rental stuff and his sentence is to live in his building.  He can't improve his apartment, until all the others have been improved.  It is really a good story, and has a great message.  I don't think, however, that landlords who happened to watch it changed their minds or attitudes.

I can never remember how to spell his name, and you'd think I'd take one minute to check a movie website, but do I? Nooooooo.  Silly, when it is right in front of me.  [ send green star]

I grew up on stories about the original boycott. My grandmother was from Claremorris in County Mayo, the village where it all happened. Her father, my great-grandfather, was involved in the goings-on. It ended when Boycott had to import Orangemen from the North to bring in his crops. The total expense far exceeded the value of the harvest & so, consequently, he went broke.

Wasn't that a shame?
