Peace of the Pie -- Take Action in Florida April 19, 2006 11:25 PM
Peace of the Pie Campaign
On Behalf of Mothers Everywhere
"Arise all women who have hearts, say firmly: Our sons shall not be taken from us to unlearn all that we have been able to teach them of charity, mercy and patience... In the name of womanhood and of humanity; take counsel with each other as the means whereby the great human family can live in peace."Click here to read more... ~Julia Ward Howe, From her Mother's Day Proclamation, 1870
1. On May 12th, tell Congress that PEACE wants a PIECE of the PIE!
Join us in this National Action on May 12th (the Friday before Mother's Day) and gather members of your community to take pies to your local Congressional offices with a banner; "On behalf of Mothers Everywhere, Peace Wants a Piece of the Pie!" as well as a downloaded national budget pie chart showing the tiny slice that represents the portion of the U.S. federal budget requested for the Department of Peace and Nonviolence.
Call your local newspapers and television stations and send them a press release (click here for media guidelines). Ask them to come and take pictures of local teams delivering the pies with Department of Peace banners. Bring your children, along with pictures they've made that convey their message of peace, and make it a fun and festive event! This is a great way to get attention for a very important endeavor.
Mother's Day was in part inspired by a woman named Julia Ward Howe who nursed the wounded during the American Civil War; she also wrote the Battle Hymn of the Republic. In 1870 she started a crusade to institute a Mother's Day as a Day for Peace. Click here to read her Mother's Day proclamation.
2. Host a 'PEACE OF THE PIE' Party.
To further empower our work for peace, host a Peace of the Pie House Party (and optional fundraiser) to spread the word about why citizens all over this country are taking pies to their local Members of Congress on behalf of the Department of Peace and Nonviolence Legislation. We want a small percent of the federal budget allocated directly toward funding projects that foster a culture of peace in our nation and around the world.
House parties are a key part of our grassroots campaign to spread our message and to raise funds for the campaign. They are also an important and fun way to identify volunteers and build momentum to pass this historic legislation. Invite your friends and family over for a Pie Party sometime just before Mother's Day (serve pie, coffee and tea), show our DVD, inform them about our work -- with help from materials we have prepared for you -- and invite them to an opportunity to visit their local congressional district office on May 12th. This is also an opportunity to encourage others to become a Peace Partner, our monthly donors sustaining the national campaign.

(FL) HELP GREYHOUNDS- Letters needed! 6:11 AM IMPORTANT - Please cross post!
Ask Governor Bush to Veto Greyhound Racing Subsidy
Earlier this month, the Florida Legislature approved a record $71 billion budget. Unfortunately, tucked into the budget is a $310,000 gift to the Pensacola Greyhound Track (supposedly to pay for hurricane damage).
Governor Bush has vetoed many of these small subsidies in previous year's budgets. Please contact Governor Bush and urge him not to spend the public's money in support of the cruel greyhound racing industry.
E-mail Governor Jeb Bush at jeb.bush@myflorida.com and ask him to veto the subsidy for the Pensacola Greyhound Track that was inserted into the state budget
Across Florida, cement kilns are spewing mercury pollution into surrounding communities and possibly into the very air that you breathe. Take action!
Mercury is a dangerous neurotoxin that can cause developmental problems in young children and during pregnancy. Because mercury persists in the environment, it bioaccumulates in fish in nearly every stream, river, and lake in America.
Click here to find out the location of cement kilns in Florida.
This past February, more than 11,000 Earthjustice supporters sent emails to the Environmental Protection Agency, calling for stronger protections against mercury pollution from cement kilns. This public outcry spurred EPA to reconsider its minimal approach to regulating some of the biggest sources of mercury pollution.
The U.S. Forest Service wants to make it easier to kill wolves, bears, cougars and other carnivores in federally designated wilderness areas -- America's most wild and remote places. Worse, the proposal would relax restrictions on using aerial gunning, motorized vehicles and cyanide guns to kill these magnificent creatures.
Sorry about the petition above; you will not be able to access it with the link I provided. You can find it at care 2's Petition Site if you wish to sign, thanks. Here is another that needs urgent signing; this link will work.
SAVE THE BALD EAGLES AND THE WETLANDS OF THE MOOSEHORN NATIONAL WILDLIFE REFUGE
Hi everyone…
I know most of you all have signed this, but we are approaching decision time.
Act Now to Protect Florida's Threatened Gopher Tortoises
Gopher tortoises have been added to Florida's list of threatened species, but the Florida Fish and Wildlife Conservation Commission isn't providing any meaningful protection for them. Sidestepping its responsibility to protect these creatures, the conservation commission is allowing developers to crush and bury gopher tortoises by the thousands. Since 1991, it has permitted developers to bury alive an estimated 80,000 gopher tortoises. You can help stop this senseless killing.
The conservation commission is accepting comments on its gopher tortoise management plan until 5:00 p.m. on August 8. Please take action today!
TAKE ACTION Tell the conservation commission to immediately stop issuing permits that allow developers to kill gopher tortoises and to draft a responsible, humane gopher tortoise management plan. Click here to submit your comments now.
Help Protect Pets from Antifreeze Poisoning August 04, 2006 11:42 AM
I wrote letters to my representative and 2 letters to my senators. One to ask him to support this, and the other to thank one that is co-sponsering the bill
Help Protect Pets from Antifreeze Poisoning
Thousands of animals are accidentally poisoned each year from ingesting Ethylene glycol, a highly toxic substance used in antifreeze and coolant in automobiles. Even a single teaspoon can prove deadly, but the sweet taste appeals to curious pets and other animals. Even children have fallen victim to Ethylene glycol poisoning.
The Antifreeze Bittering Act of 2005 (S. 1110 & H.R. 2567) requires manufactures to include denatonium benzoate -- one of the most bitter substances known to man -- to be added to antifreeze to make it unpalatable. This simple life-saving step will cost manufactures only 2-3 cents per $5 gallon, a small price to pay to save the lives of an estimated 1,400 children and 10,000 pets each year.
TAKE ACTION: Check to see if your U.S. Representative or U.S. Senator is already a House or Senate co-sponsor of the Antifreeze Bittering Act. If they are not, please make a brief polite phone call urging them to co-sponsor this important bill. You can reach your federal legislators through the Capitol Switchboard at (202) 224-3121 or click here to look up your federal legislators and their office phone numbers. Not sure what to say? Here is a sample phone call:
"My name is [your name] and I'm calling from [your city and state]. As a constituent of [your Senators' or Representative's name], I urge [him or her] to support the Antifreeze Bittering Act. This bill requires antifreeze manufacturers to add a bittering agent to their product so that pets and children do not accidentally ingest it. Antifreeze is highly toxic in small doses -- even a single teaspoon can have a lethal effect. Adding a bittering agent costs only 2-3 cents per gallon. I hope you will support this sensible and much-needed legislation. Thank you."
After you make your calls, fill in the form on the right to automatically send your Senators and Representative about the Antifreeze Bittering Act.
Congress receives a lot of email. It is very important that you edit the subject line and the message below with your own words so that your legislators know the message came from a constituent.
FOR PINELLAS COUNTY, FLORIDA August 16, 2006 9:15 PM
Folks:
We have several candidates who have made it through the process. We have two races that need a tie breaking vote, and we still will address any challenges to the endorsements -- primarily a concern for folks who have been added to our membership since the original voting deadline. Should any member challenge an endorsement, we will all vote again until we have a consensus as to whether we should endorse only one candidate in that race, or split the endorsement in that race.
It looks like we're going to be endorsing Phyllis Busansky in FL-10 -- we'll know by the end of day Sunday whether any members challenge her endorsement -- and she's now in a run-off against candidates across the country at Russ Feingold's Progressive Patriot's Fund. If she wins, we've helped raise her $5K.
Florida Primaries, September 5, Democrats, Go Vote!! September 03, 2006 12:04 PM
We're now in Get Out The Vote (GOTV) mode in Florida and we are asking every PDA member to make an effort to get Democrats to the polls during early voting and on Sept. 5th. Primary Election Day. In Florida, Republicans often register to vote as Democrats so that they can vote in the primaries, we can't let them decide our candidates.
In this crucial primary, most of the candidates that Florida PDA Chapters have endorsed have either joined PDA or are brave new progressives who will have a serious impact in the November election and beyond. Imagine a nationwide progressive network of elected officials that will really turn around this country.
PDA members please help in their GOTV effort for this Primary Election, They are as of this date:

This week, the Senate is planning to quietly hold a vote that would pardon President Bush for breaking the law by illegally wiretapping innocent Americans. So far, Democrats and some Republicans are holding strong against the bill, and there are good chances to stop it if enough of us speak up.
"The Senate must not pardon President Bush for breaking the law by illegally wiretapping innocent Americans. Instead, Congress should be holding him accountable."
