I am trying to reach as many people as possible to help educate them about our animal shelters, puppy mills, importance of spaying & neutering our pets and more.  There is a lot that the shelters and animal rescues do that the general public does not realize.

As we write this, the Senate is debating the nomination of mining and cattle industry lobbyist William Myers III for a lifetime appointment to the Circuit Court of Appeals -- the second highest court in the land. Myers is the first of 20 nominees Bush has re-submitted in his second term. All 20 repeat nominees were rejected last term by Senate Democrats (as compared to 204 judges they accepted) because these nominees consistently sided with corporate special interests over the rights of ordinary Americans.

The Senate has the power to approve or reject judicial nominations because judges -- above all else -- must be trusted by Americans on all sides to rule fairly. So why does Bush refuse to send new nominees both parties can agree on? Because while his presidency will be over in 4 years, the judges he appoints will be on the bench for the rest of their lives. This is Bush's big push to lock in his hard right, corporate-friendly ideology for decades to come -- and that is exactly why we must not back down now.

The fight begins today. The Myers vote is a key test -- and may well determine whether Bush can stack the judiciary, all the way up to the Supreme Court, with a steady stream of hard right, pro-corporate judges. It's crucial that our Senators know that we out here in America are counting on them to hold the line against all 20 of Bush's rejected, partisan judges.

Here's a brief summary of just the first three of the 20 partisan judges re-nominated by President Bush.

William Myers III has never been a judge and spent most of his career as a lobbyist for the cattle and mining industry.^[1] He has written that all habitat conservation laws are unconstitutional because they interfere with potential profit.^[2] In 2001, Bush appointed him as the chief lawyer for the Department of the Interior. In that role he continued as a champion of corporate interests, setting his agenda in meetings with former employers he promised not to speak with, and even illegally giving away sacred Native American land to be strip mined.^[3]

Terrence Boyle was a legal aide to Jesse Helms. As a judge, his signature decisions have attempted to circumvent federal laws barring employment discrimination by race, gender, and disability.^[4] His rulings have been overturned a staggering 120 times by the conservative 4th District Court of Appeals, either due to gross errors in judgment or simple incompetence.^[5]

William Pryor Jr. served as Attorney General of Alabama, where he took money from Phillip Morris, fought against the anti-tobacco lawsuit until it was almost over, and cost the people of Alabama billions in settlement money for their healthcare system as a result.^[6] He called Roe v. Wade "the worst abomination of constitutional law in our history," and has consistently argued against the federal protections for the civil rights of minorities, lesbian and gay couples, women, and the disabled.^[7]

If we falter now, then decades down the road dozens of judges like this will still be ruling in favor of unchecked corporate greed and against the basic principles of accountability and fairness.

The Bush Administration is prepared to stop at nothing to smash Democratic resistance and stack the courts. As President of the Senate, Dick Cheney has even threatened to push these 20 through by using a parliamentary trick so abusive even he calls it the "nuclear option." If they can get away with it, the "nuclear option" would eliminate the right to filibuster -- a rule that has allowed 40 or more Senators to keep extremists from all sides off the courts for centuries.

If that happens, when Supreme Court vacancies begin to open up in a few months there will be no motivation for Bush to nominate justices acceptable to both parties, and no ability for Democrats to oppose even the most dangerous extremists.

We must draw the line here, by stopping Bush's 20 repeat nominees. They were rejected once -- they can and must be rejected again.

While fur farming has been banned in the UK, Norway’s Hå Municipality and Norwegian fur farmers are planning to build a massive fur-farming complex in Rogaland, in the western part of Norway. The complex would be the largest in Norway and would house more than 110,000 animals.

This is despite the fact that the majority of Norwegians are against fur farming and, according to Norwegian animal rights group NOAH, a Norwegian court has ruled that fur farming is unethical.



Animals on fur farms suffer severe confinement and deprivation of all that is natural to them. Fur-farmed animals are often seen bobbing their heads and pacing in their dirty cages—disturbing, repetitive behaviour that is a sign of severe psychological distress.

Several fur farmers have shown interest in the complex but are seeking government support.

In Australia, lambs are put through a gruesome procedure called mulesing, in which huge chunks of skin are sliced from the animals' backsides, with no painkillers given to the animals. Then, when their wool production declines, sheep are shipped to the Middle East on open-deck ships. These journeys, which can last months, are to countries where animal welfare standards are non-existent. So the suffering sheep are dragged off the ships, loaded into trucks, sometimes upside-down, and then have their throats slit while they are fully conscious.

Although there are alternatives to mulesing and live export, it is because companies like Benetton continue to purchase wool from them that Australian farmers have no incentive to change. Benetton can change this by refusing to purchase wool from Australia, at least until mulesing and live export are stopped.

Veal is made from baby male calves who are taken from their mothers at one day old, then forced to live in tiny crates that keep them immobile for 12 to 15 weeks just so their flesh will be tender at slaughter. Foie gras is made from the enlarged livers of ducks and geese who have so much corn mush mechanically forced down their throats that many die from ruptured stomachs and punctured windpipes. A recent law will make the production and sale of foie gras illegal in California by 2012, and compassionate legislators in Illinois, Massachusetts, Oregon and New York have introduced bills to ban it in their states.

I understand that your intention was to honor your distinguished guests by serving them something special, but there can be no justification for the amount of suffering forced on calves, ducks and geese for veal and foie gras. I respectfully urge you to avoid serving foie gras or veal at future celebrations, and to let the world know how much suffering these defenseless animals endure by addressing this issue on your show.

I think it is highly unjust and undemocratic that your department has disregarded the views of 80 per cent of the Irish population where hare coursing is concerned.

Opinion polls carried out over the past three decades have repeatedly confirmed that a huge majority want this cruel blood sport banned. And it IS cruel.

Northern Ireland was stopped earlier this year with the introduction of a ban on the netting of hares. I call on you to urgently work towards enforcing a similar ban in your own area as well.

As it stands, the Republic not only allows this blood sport but it is also now accommodating two Northern clubs who were stopped from coursing in that jurisdiction.

As one of the majority who want the "protected" hare species spared the terrifying abuse of coursing, I call on you to grant no further licences to hare coursing clubs. Please make the current coursing season the final onem, if you cannot rescind the current licence.

Annually since April 2003 the hedgehogs of the Uist Islands (Scotland, UK) are hunted down and killed because they are blamed for the falling populations of wading birds in the area (as they are thought to eat the birds’ eggs). Known predators of the wader’s eggs include rats, feral cats, mink and gulls, yet no culls are aimed or planned at these species.

The Scottish Natural Heritage justify it’s culling policy by claiming moving wild hedgehogs to the mainland is inhumane, yet there is no scientific evidence to support this claim. Additionally in response to the decision to unnecessarily cull the hedgehogs a volunteer-lead rescue project named “Uist Hedgehog Rescue” was created and has successfully saved, relocated to the mainland and released over 400 hedgehogs in the last two years. Reports have even been received of ex-Uist hedgehogs being seen with young the following year.

We, the undersigned, request that the Uist Waders Project comprising the Scottish Executive, Scottish National Heritage and the Royal Society for the Protection of Birds cease their annual cull of hedgehogs on North and South Uist and Benbecula. The cull is cruel and unnecessary as the hedgehogs can be safely relocated.

Ban The Sale of Animals In Pet Shops:

Most puppies and kittens sold in pet shops are bred in ‘mills’ where dogs and cats are kept in sub-standard conditions and continually bred until they die. . . . Cute puppies and kittens displayed in pet shops cause impulse purchases of animals who are then dumped when people realise the time, cost and responsibility of caring for a pet. The RSPCA received approximately 133,000 abandoned in 2002/03, and this figure is at least doubled when the many overcrowded animal shelters all over Australia are factored in to the equation.

Message: Hi , to all friends and friend of friends an ancient forrest needs your help..

Wentwood Forest, near Newport in South Wales, is the remnant of a vast woodland that once stretched from the river Usk in south Wales to the Wye Valley. As well as being the largest ancient woodland in Wales, it’s also one of the largest ancient woodland sites in the UK.

This special ancient woodland is part of our natural and cultural heritage, and it’s under threat. Unless the Trust acts now then the remaining fragments of rare ancient woodland will be destroyed by further commercial forestry. To safeguard its future and to restore the site to its former glory the Trust wants to purchase 352 hectares (870 acres) which have come on the market.

Most of the native trees in Wentwood were felled to provide valuable timber. Commercial forestry and the planting of conifers has damaged the ancient wood and its dependent wildlife, including protected species like the dormouse. Further clear felling and conifer planting will destroy the vulnerable surviving remnants.

This site is a national treasure, with rich historical and cultural associations. Wentwood is mentioned in texts such as the Book of Llandaff and was once a 12th century Royal Hunting Forest. Medieval courts were once held at Foresters’ Oaks, two huge trees which sadly no longer survive.

We won’t get another chance to save this precious ancient wood. You can make a difference today by pledging to the save Wentwood Forest appeal.

Leo Hertel, a 66-year-old man from Beloit, Wis., faces felony animal mistreatment charges after tying a dog to a tree and mercilessly beating the animal with a baseball bat. When Rock County Sheriff's deputies arrived on the scene after being called by witnesses, Hertel claimed he was punishing the dog for biting someone. Veterinarians who administered treatment to the victim say the dog now suffers from a fractured skull and a broken jaw, and may be completely blind.

Please thank Rock County District Attorney David O'Leary for pressing felony charges on Hertel and urge him to aggressively pursue the case.

Can the US government take your kids because you
follow a minority religion?

Well, normally, I would not have thought that the
government had the right to take peoples'
children away simply because some government
official disagreed with their religious beliefs.
However, it appears that I would be wrong in
thinking this.

A judge in Indiana has ordered some parents to
cease and desist from teaching their child
anything regarding their Wiccan beliefs. The
judge has decreed that the child may be
"confused" by being exposed to religious beliefs
that are not "mainstream". Apparently the judge
believes that this possible confusion could
damage the child, and thus the protection of the
"welfare" of the child overrides any
consideration of the First Amendment rights of
the parents or the child. If the parents dare to
disregard the judge's orders, (and teach their
child about their beliefs), the judge can order
the Child Welfare Services to take the child and
place him in foster care.

The unlawful wolf-killings that prompted the criminal charges imposed on one of three hunter-pilot teams permitted by the state to shoot wolves near McGrath is utterly predictable. Permit-holders may well view the shooting opportunity as open-ended, and go anywhere to kill wolves. It’s lucky that David Haeg and Tony Zellers were caught.

The Daily News-Miner’s editorial skips the facts about the McGrath wolf-control program. Originally, the McGrath area included 1,700 sq. miles. Wolf killers couldn’t find any wolves in this area despite Alaska’s Department of Fish & Game’s (ADF&G’s) assurances that the area contained too many wolves, so ADF&G expanded the control area to provide wolves to kill. This is really just a letter that everyone should sign. All the wolves are doing is eating their natural food. They don't deserve to be shot.

In a June 11, 2005 raid at the Del Rio Game Club in Cocke County, Tennessee, 100 agents representing the FBI, USDA, IRS, and state/local law enforcement busted one of the biggest cockfighting rings in the U.S. Authorities made 143 arrests, confiscated $40,000, and seized hundreds of fighting birds from the Del Rio pit, owned by Don and Donna Poteat of the United Gamefowl Breeders Association (UGBA).

Cockfighting is an offense in 48 states. The UGBA is a tax-exempt association that represents cockfighting interests nationwide. I am shocked the IRS grants tax-free status to an organization implicated in criminal practices. It is time for federal officials to squelch illegal animal bloodsports.

Please cosponsor the Animal Fighting Prohibition Enforcement Act (H.R. 817), to upgrade penalties from misdemeanor to felony for the interstate and foreign trade in animals exploited for fighting. The Animal Fighting Prohibition Enforcement Act also prohibits interstate and foreign commerce of cockfighting weapons such as razor-sharp gaffs.

Fighting networks are linked to animal abuse, drug trafficking, prostitution, illegal gambling and firearms sales. Dogfighters routinely steal companion animals to augment their stock of bait dogs. Children, commonly employed as "runners" for the betting operation, are subjected and desensitized to these violent, unlawful activities.

For cockfights, weapons similar to ice picks are affixed to the legs of gamecocks. Often drugged with stimulants and steroids to intensify
aggression inside the arena, birds gouge eyes and sever wings. Handlers resuscitate collapsing roosters by blowing on their heads. When a bird begins to drown in his own blood due to perforated lungs, handlers may even suck blood from the bird's beak to prolong the contest.

In nature, roosters rarely engage in fatal combat. Fighting cocks are intentionally bred and trained to attack. Cockfighting is also associated  with the spread of avian diseases responsible for the extermination of millions of chickens--and millions of federal dollars for containment.

When authorities raid dogfighting camps, they find emaciated and disfigured dogs. Most of their ears are amputated with razors, a common "autograph" on fight dogs. American pit bull terriers, the most frequently used breed, are disciplined to rip each other to pieces during contests inside plywood-wall
pits before applauding spectators.

Veterinary care is not an option for animals covered in puncture wounds, lacerations and scars. Instead, handlers crudely tape or suture their prizefighters' injuries and may shoot or slash the throats of losers. More often, worn down fight dogs are abandoned. Left to fend for themselves on the streets, they either die or jeopardize communities.

Please cosponsor the Animal Fighting Prohibition Enforcement Act (H.R. 817). I am counting on you to help enact this imperative legislation early in the 109th Congress.

I am writing you in regards to and on behalf of the dogs who were drowned by your city employee Chantan Morin on the orders of city supervisor Dan Nick.

I find it reprehensible that you have not terminated Chantan Morin and prohibited him from working with animals in your city in the future. On what grounds do you deem him fit to remain employed working with animals? He DROWNED these dogs in the sewer system. I question why this is not abhorrent to you. Your attitude of asking your residents to “put this behind them” and move on without giving them any sense of closure and justice is glib to say the least.

 It is, without question, unacceptable to simply take no action and move on as though some sort of justice has been served. How you can sleep at night with the vision of these animals struggling to the surface and gasping for air as your employee brutally shoves them back under the sewage waiting for their lungs to fill up so they will suffocate is beyond me. Do you really think that Chantan Morin’s behavior is correctable by a course in animal cruelty? This is NOT the first time he has been in trouble. Animal abuse is a sentinel indicator of sociopathic behavior. He lives in your city, under your authority - if you choose do nothing; you are as guilty as he is.

 Chantan Morin must be immediately terminated and prohibited from working with animals in any manner in the future. He should be prosecuted to the fullest extent of the law for animal cruelty as well as for breaking Texas law which states in what manner animals may be legally euthanized.

 In addition, a complete investigation of Jourdanton City Animal Services and their practices and management must be conducted - including City Manger Dan Nick who withheld all information pertaining to this incident from the City Council and who barely gave a "slap on the wrist" to the perpetrators.

PETA has uncovered the horrific torture that is routine in Thailand’s secret “training” camps. Still-nursing baby elephants are literally dragged from their mothers, kicking and screaming. They are immobilized, beaten mercilessly, and gouged with nails for days at a time. These ritualized “training” sessions leave the elephants badly injured, traumatized, or even dead.

I've started a petition (from the information from Monkey World - see: http://www.defra.gov.uk/corporate/consult/cites-specimen/index.htm) to support the full implementation of powers for the CITES convention on endangered species (see http://www.cites.org/ for details of the convention). This petition runs only to 31st October 2005 when it has to be on the Minister's desk in the House of Parliament. Though it is intended for UK implementation, the CITES powers are in effect throughout the world by all the signees. Therefore anyone can sign it (and hopefully get more attention by the Minister).

This will give the authorities powers to not only stop trading, but also stopping people from keeping endangered and inappropriate animals as pets. Do you really want YOUR neighbour to keep dangerous or poisonous animals in his garden? Also Monkey World has promoted this to stop all types of monkeys being sold and kept as pets, which is a cruel thing to do especially for monkeys.

We undersigned urge the Government of Finland immediately to transpose The Directive (2003/30/EC) that requires 2% of all road traffic fuels sold be biofuels in 2005 progressively increasing to reach a minimum of 5.75% of fuels sold in 2010.
We undersigned strongly urge Finland to exceed these goals, and to represent this plan in the conference of ASEM countries to be held in Helsinki, 2006, in September. We undersigned also strongly urge making electric cars and other zero emission vehicles like scooters and electric bicycles available for consumers with competititve prices by means of taxation.

This crime makes me sick, sad, hurt and angry, all at the same time. I feel that this man should not be let off easily. He should spend the maximum amount of time in jail as the law allows. Behind the Scenes of the 2005 European Basketball Championship  

Prior to the current Serbian administration, Serbian politicians promised to improve  animal welfare laws yet the horrendous conditions for all animals still exists in Serbia. Today these same politicians ignore the pleas and cries from their own citizens and individuals abroad including Brigitte Bardot to stop the torture and murder of animals The following photographs depict how the current Serbian administration is administering animal control. These animal control methods were employed at an accelerated rate prior to the European Basketball Championship.  

Serbian streets continue to be inundated with companion animals (dogs and cats). Animal control in Serbia consists of; paying hunters for each animal killed (hunters present the animal's tail for payment), poison such as T-61 and Kreozan which kills by suffocation, drenching the animal with gasoline and burning them to death and other barbaric methods such as beating, stoning and hanging.

These brutal killings have accelerated in the capital city of Belgrade, this past year in what seems to be a state sponsored massacre. The government's objective appears to be to present the city as an attractive destination for tourists visiting sporting events such as the "Belgrade Marathon" and the "European Basketball Championship". Even dogs that are sterilized (spayed / neutered) by reputable organizations such as "Foundation Brigitte Bardot" and fed by animal loving Serbian citizens have disappeared. According to these citizens, what is even more astonishing is the lack of coverage by the Serbian media of this slaughter. Serbian media continues to portray friendly dogs as rabid, vicious killers to their audience which makes one wonder, have things really changed since the media controlled Milosevic regime?

Since this savage massacre was caused by the preparations for your sporting event, I would ask you and the sponsors of the 2005 FIBA Eurochampionships to denounce these atrocities publicly. Serbian pups, barely six weeks old, await their fate

During the war in Bosnia in the 1990s, companion animals were not allowed into human shelters, leaving some 20,000 dogs abandoned on the streets. Serbian officials are now struggling with a surging overpopulation of stray dogs they must contain in preparation for the thousands of visitors expected for the European Basketball Championships to be held in Belgrade in September. Because there are few animal protection laws on the books, and those that do exist are routinely ignored, many in Serbia have resorted to brutally slaughtering dogs on the streets, with the "quiet blessing" of some government officials.

As reports from concerned citizens and tourists filter out to the international community, attention is increasingly being drawn to this problem. Witnesses nationwide report the brutal massacre of dogs -- stray and owned. Reprehensible killing methods such as mass poisonings, hangings and brutal beatings occur on a daily basis. In the city of Zlatibor, the mayor even issues hunting permits that allow people to shoot dogs on sight -- often right in front of vacationing tourists and children.

Without question, Serbia faces a very real challenge. Sadly, the current solutions are not, by any stretch of the imagination, humane. Fortunately, there are a few organizations working in Serbia to end this. Welfare for Animals Global, Inc. (WAG NY), a political advocacy and lobby group based in New York City, is working to pressure Serbian authorities to initiate humane reforms in a country devoid of any semblance of animal welfare whatsoever. After a formal meeting with the Serbian Ambassador to the United States in June of this year, WAG was issued a formal invitation to visit Serbia and sit down for discussions with Serbian government officials.

Things are on the right track, but in order for positive change to occur and to resolve the issue of substandard animal welfare, the Serbian government must become proactive; especially as the world's spotlight turns upon Belgrade for the European Basketball Tournament. This is where we come in!
