Friends of Animals Planned Geese Cull in Prospect Park
3 years ago

Friends of Animals - Please cross-post to any and all in the NYC/Prospect Park area. And beyond. Thank you! - Johanna *************************************************************** For those of you who have been following the situation -- the USDA has a contract to exterminate the Canada Geese in our area - in fact, one million are slotted to be killed this year. In an effort to "Think global, act local" a group of concerned community members are forming a protective goose-watch. Their interest is to protect the geese in Prospect Park from another massacre -- Last year on July 8th -- over 400 geese and their baby goslings were rounded up, bound and gassed to death in gas chambers set up at JFK Airport. http://parkslope.patch.com/blog_posts/first-they-came-for-the-eggs The USDA gets $$$ millions of dollars from private interest and public (The City of New York, for example, is paying for the local killing) and have shown an unbelievable callousness and insensitivity to the global crisis that all wildlife are currently experiencing due to man-made disasters like the Japan Nuclear tragedy and the BP oil disaster. In fact, the USDA's "Wildlife Services" could more aptly be termed, "Wild Death Services" Brooklyn folks are looking for a few good people to join in on their nightly watch -- please contact David at protectourgeese@gmail.com -----Original Message----- From: For the love of the geese in Prospect Park To: protectourgeese@gmail.com Sent: Tue, Jun 7, 2011 5:17 pm Subject: Re: GooseWatch - Night Owls Needed for Stake Out, Contact Info Needed for "Operation Honk" If you are receiving this email, you have expressed some level of interest in helping to protect New York City's goose population which has been the target of cruel USDA round-ups. Most urgently, we hope you are interested in participating in the stake out of Prospect Park, as well as the vigil / solidarity rally we will hold when the USDA returns, or just helping to spread the word. This week reports have varied counts from between 25 and 45 geese at Prospect Park Lake. We are not convinced that Prospect Park is not a USDA target site. We have already begun our stake out of the park, and although somewhat exhausting, it has been going very well. Actually, the weather has been beautiful. We can detect people in the park after dark, and we expect to be able to determine if/when a round up operation is taking place. We are still looking for more people who can join us so we can divide up our time. If you would like to come for a night, any night, between 12:30am and 5am, or any portion thereof, please let us know - we can use all the help (and company) we can get. We especially need people who can come after 4am. We will be out every night for the next week & month, even come tonight or tomorrow night if you can join us. Plans for a vigil / solidarity rally a/k/a "Operation Honk" are being finalized. Unlike last year, if there are round ups in Prospect Park this year, we want to be there, to bear witness, and to prevent a round up if possible. As soon we spot governmental goose killers, we will immediately contact all our concerned neighbors to come out and show support for the geese. The USDA will come under the cover of darkness when the park is closed, and when most people are asleep. Please read the following if you want to be contacted, and please respond as soon as possible: If you give us a way to contact you between 12am and 5am, we will. If you haven't already done so, please provide your (first) name, email address, and phone number - and confirm that we can call your phone for this event. Your phone will need to be on so that we can reach you by text or phone during these hours. Also, even if you have already provided your contact info, it will be much easier for us to reach you by text message as an email if you let us know what cell phone carrier you use: Sprint phonenumber@messaging.sprintpcs.com, Verizon phonenumber@vtext.com, T-Mobile phonenumber@tmomail.net, AT&T phonenumber@txt.att.net More information will be forthcoming regarding what our demonstration will entail in order to ensure safety and success. Thank you to everyone who has been getting the word out about the stake out. If you are receiving an email from me for the first time, please also read the email below from June 2. Please print and distribute the attached recruiting flier. Please forward this to people who you think might be interested. Thank you. -GooseWatch PS - Also, if you do not live near Prospect Park, but there are Canada geese in a park near you - please let us know. Attached is a list of parks where the DEC made rounds in 2010 for head counts, a red dash indicates it was a kill site. The taxpayer-funded government agents who brazenly came into our peaceful Prospect Park at night and massacred hundreds of helpless families of geese last year are in New York right now. Our goal is simple: be on the scene if and when the USDA returns to Prospect Park. Last year the public was lied to about what actually happened to hundreds of geese. There are not as quite as many geese now, but there will be no secrets in Prospect Park this summer - at least if we have anything to say about it. Transparancy is the goal. We have formed a legal vigil to keep watch outside Prospect Park. Preparations have been made: watch locations have been determined, technological advantages purchased. We have a prevention plan for safety. We will be there overnight every night to protect the geese. As soon we spot the goon squad we will immediately contact all our concerned neighbors to come out and show support for the geese. How you can help: 1. Join the "Stake Out" team. We are looking for anyone who ca
