Many of you know Dusty and this is NOT a scam....
My Little "Kiwi" Needs Long-Overdue Surgery:
Dear Care2 Family: It was suggessted to me by a Care2 friend that I might want to post a need that I have to this Group. I am not one to ask for any kind of help from anyone but when it comes to my pet Kiwi....I have no shame and will humble myself. I am terminally ill and on a very low disability check. My little dog Kiwi was diagnosed with Bi-laterial Patella Fluxation which cost around $1400 per leg to fix. I rescued little Kiwi and literally went to jail for "Felony Dog Knapping" by literally taking her out of the back yard of my neighbors as he was kicking her with cowboy boots and beating her with a bicycle chain. She was only about 6-8 months old then and I feared for her life. Well to make a long story shorter...I ended up winning the case and the man who was abusing her ended up being charged and my charges were dropped, he was then fined $1500, he received a 2yr. suspended sentence with 6 months probation, ordered not to have another animal for 5yrs. and then was ordered to pay for all of my court cost and Attorney fees. The little dog ended up as evidence and sent to the Animal Control Shelter pending outcome of the hearing and then she was put up for adoption. I received a call from the Supervisor of Animal Control that she was going up for Adoption and I was the first one there and I adopted her. She is now about 11yrs. old. She was diagnoses with the B.P.F. when she was about 1yr. old but the Vet told me that as long as I vigoriously exercise her that it would strenghten her joints, muscles & tendons and would prolong it for awhile but surgery would eventually be inevitable. The Vet is surprised that she has done so well but I taught her to chase and catch a frisbee and play ball since I am handicap and could not very easily walk her as I wear leg braces and use a cane. I have been out there exercising her come rain or shine, snow or ice - it doesn't matter as my little Kiwi came first for me. I have had to go thru alot of and have had 2 strokes and 1 heartattack and also have Parkinsons Disease. To this day, I do not know who saved who. If I saved little Kiwi or if she saved me, but she is the love of my life. I am spending roughly around $90 a month for Rimadyl to help control pain and inflamation but she is starting to get where that medicine is no longer working not to mention it is bad for her Liver to be used over an extended period of time. She has been on it now for about 7yrs. Her back legs are starting to get stiff and her legs go out of socket all of the time. I can't bear to hear her cry and I don't know what to do anymore. There is only about $38 left over after I pay my rent (I live in a Assisted Living Home), the Electric and Kiwi's medicine so there is nothing really to put back to even save for this surgery. I thought about going out and holding a sign, I asked the pet stores if I could put a can up in their stores for donations and they said "No" so I don't know what else to do . I have no family and I am alone with just me and my little Skye/Yorkie Terrier Mix Kiwi. I won't ask for money for myself but will let my Pride go to ask for help for my dog.
I do not know anymore what to do for my little doggie. She is in great pain and whines all the time (something she never used to do) and it breaks my heart. If I cannot get her surgery done, she will remain in constant severe pain and I cannot allow that for her. I will feel that I have no other choice but to put her down (something I thought I'd never say) out of my love for her and NOT wanting to see her suffer.
I have set up a "Debandi" fund at my Vets should anyone want to make donations to the cause. This way, you will know that your money is being used the way that it is suppossed to be used and not mishandeled. I have also since set up a paypal account but am not sure what information one needs in order to send money to that account.

Even if we sent $5 (US unfortunately) or a little more if you can - we can help Dusty out- she is an amazing woman. I have posted her story places previously. I know I am on a limited income - but I can afford $5 and not do something else. Some of us can and some can't and then I ask for prayers. Let's help give Dusty a miracle!!!!!!
After many obstacles - this is the result...
For those of you who are following this story, Kiwi is scheduled to have an initial exam by the Carolina Veternarian Specialist on Tuesday Jan. 11th,2011 who will be performing her Bi-lateral Patella Fluxation Surgery provided that the funds can be raised for this surgery. If I cannot raise the funds needed for her surgery....then I will have no choice but to put this vibrant, brave and courageous little doggie down - something that I do not want to have to do as she still has a lot of spunk and play in her and is still very active inspite of her pain and inflamation.
To date....there has been donated directly to the Vet the sum of $140.00 and there has been the amount of $159.24 donated to the PayPal account for her surgery that will cost $1500 per leg. That means that we have raised $299.25 so far. We still have a long, long way to go on this. Please, my care2 family...my little Kiwi was a rescue dog who fought hard to survive the injuries sustained to her by her previous owner who abused her when she was a pup and it would be so sad to have to make a choice to put her down after she fougt and struggled so hard to survive. I simply DO NOT HAVE this kind of money as I am on disability myself - but together WE CAN RAISE IT a dollar at a time without it financially hurting anyone. PLEASE, I BEG YOU... WE NEED YOUR HELP.
Donations can be made to the PayPal account usind the email@example.com e-mail address and if you want to donate directly to the cause by way of the Vet....There has been provision set up for a "Kiwidebandi Fund" account at the Vets. You can call or reach them directly at:

Hey you all....I have news. This lady, Becky Stover got something accomplished at NCU in Raliegh, N.C. to be able to have both legs done for a total amount of $600.00 PER LEG. That is $1200.00 plus another maybe $300 to $400 for follow-up exams and exrays. I guess you would say that all-in-all I need about $1800.00 of which we have already close to $1200.00.
Of course getting there is going to be a work of art as I need someone who has either a van or a hitch to put my rack on for my Hoveround Wheelchair that does NOT fold up and weighs about 250 lbs. so I have been on the phone most of the day today trying to secure rides with the bribery of money to pay them for their gas and time...to make it worth helping me out. You really find out who your friends are when you need them and these are people that I have helped out time and time again and never asked for a dime from them. When this is all over with....I'm getting NEW friends. Ha!
Anyway, I have an appointment with them on Feb. 14th and they said that they would probably perform the surgery the next day. We have enough money that has been donated to go on thru with one surgery NOW. I have already done the paper work and all.
People still need to continue to make donations to PayPal or to Carolina Vet Specialist as they will then cut a check to NCU when the time comes. This way we will NOT confuse people now in mid-stream.
If anyone wants to talk to NCU about this you can call (866)893-7864 and make sure you talk to Emma. Maybe donations can be made to them directly but I don't know about that at this time as I didn't think to ask.
And yes, the correct e-mail address to Carolina Vet Specialist is:
You all have been so, so very supportive in dealing with this, in helping get the word out there, in contacting various organizations, and in your support with prayers and all. I am so truely grateful to everyone who has played a part in making this MIRACLE happen for Kiwi and I. I feel so humbled as I have helped everyone else out my whole entire life but never has anyone really tried to help me out. And most of you people dont even know me accept from a website. Most people have just took and took and took from me all of my life. You all gave some and some of you gave it your all. You are all winners in my book.
Since getting out of the Military and coming home from Desert Storm, I have not had a good taste in my mouth for humanity in a long time. I had lost all faith in mankind. You all, however have helped to restore a piece of that back to me...and for that, I am grateful.
You all Rock! Thank You!
Please help in any way you can.
