The Humboldt marten, a carnivorous mammal about the size of a house cat, once abundantly populated the west coast of North America. The expansion of the United States' logging industry all but wiped out the species when it felled much of its old-growth

Terrestrial Mammal Species of Special Concern in California, Bolster, B.C., Ed., 1998

Humboldt marten,

(Martes americana humboldtensis)

http://www.dfg.ca.gov/wildlife/nongame/ssc/docs/mammal/species/44.pdf

Based on specimens of American martens taken at known localities in California,
Grinnell et al. (1937:209) concluded that "two well-marked races occur within the State".

The Humboldt marten (M. a. humboldtensis) occurred in the coastal redwood (Sequoia sempervirens) zone from the Oregon border south to Fort Ross, Sonoma County.

The Sierra Nevada marten (M. a.sierrae) occurred from Trinity and Siskiyou counties east to Mount Shasta and south through the Sierra Nevada to Tulare County.

Status: Class I. M. a. humboldtensis appears to meet CESA criteria for listing as Endangered in its historic range of Del Norte, Humboldt, Mendocino, and Sonoma counties. The combination of historic trapping and more recent habitat loss by timber harvest has led to the severe reduction or extirpation of this taxon (Kucera et al. 1995). Extensive field surveys have failed to detect Humboldt martens in any but the most northern portion of their historic range.

M. a. sierrae is still widely distributed in its historic range (Kucera et al. 1995) and does not meet criteria for listing as Threatened species or a Species of Special Concern at this time. However, given the extremely low population densities of American martens, they should be considered when assessing the effects of habitat alterations such as timber harvest. We have therefore placed M. a. sierrae on the Watch List.

American Marten

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/American_marten

The American marten (Martes americana) is a North American member of the family Mustelidae, sometimes referred to as the pine marten. The name "pine marten" is derived from the common but distinct Eurasian species of Martes. It differs from the fisher (Martes pennanti) in that it is smaller in size.

The American marten is a long, slender-bodied weasel about the size of a mink with relatively large rounded ears, short limbs, and a bushy tail. American marten have a roughly triangular head and sharp nose. Their long, silky fur ranges in color from pale yellowish buff to tawny brown to almost black. Their head is usually lighter than the rest of their body, while the tail and legs are darker. American marten usually have a characteristic throat and chest bib ranging in color from pale straw to vivid orange. Sexual dimorphism is pronounced, with males averaging about 15% larger than females in length and as much as 65% larger in body weight. Body length ranges from 1.5 to 2.2 feet (0.5–0.7 m). Adult weight ranges from 1.1 to 3.1 pounds (0.5–1.4 kg) and varies by age and location. Other than size, sexes are similar in appearance.American marten have limited body-fat reserves, experience high mass-specific heat loss, and have a limited fasting endurance. In winter, individuals may go into shallow torpor daily to reduce heat loss.

Mmofflines: I could have guessed a letter, but for most of one day there where no responses to the letters guessed. If we all guessed a letter that day, the whole alphabet would have been guessed by the time the puzzle was filled in.
