RC, while I do enjoy Catnip flavored candy I think I'll just stick with the Endangered Species chocolate bar that Nyack has graciously given me. Thanks anyway, for wanting to share your half. I would have enjoyed rolling around the floor afterward, but I don't want to spoil my newly licked coat. LOL

DESCRIPTION

The national bird of India, the spectacular appearance of the male Indian peafowl, or &lsquoeacock’, is well-known throughout the world. The male’s head, neck and breast are a glossy, iridescent blue, with white patches above and below the eyes, along with a crest of upright, blue-tipped feathers on the crown of the head. By contrast, the back and wings are greyish-brown with brown barring. Undoubtedly the most striking feature of this species is the long ‘train’ of feathers at the rear, which, in the male, can encompass nearly two-thirds of the total body length. Often mistaken for a tail, the train is in fact composed of long tail coverts, while the true tail feathers comprise short stiff quills that help to hold the train aloft. The feathers of the train lack the barbed structure that normally holds bird feathers together, hence they look loose and fluffy, and each bears a striking eyespot or ‘ocellus’ . The female Indian peafowl or &lsquoeahen’ is far more understated, with a whitish face and throat, brown crown, hindneck and back, a white belly and a metallic green upper breast. The train is present, but much shorter and lacks the distinctive eyespots . The call of the Indian peafowl, which is commonly used to advertise the presence of the male during the breeding season, but also heard in the late afternoon and after dark, is a loud, trumpet-like scream “kee-ow”.

RANGE

The native range of the Indian peafowl encompasses India, Sri Lanka, Pakistan, Bhutan, Bangladesh and Nepal. Captive specimens are found throughout the world, and introduced, feral populations now occur in Australia, New Zealand, the Bahamas, and the USA.

HABITAT

In its native range, the Indian peafowl can typically be found inhabiting the undergrowth in open forest and woodland, usually near a river or stream. The Indian peafowl is also known to occur in farmland, villages, and increasingly, more urban area.

THREATS

While the Indian peafowl is revered in many parts of its range, in others it has suffered from the effects of hunting for its meat and feathers. In some parts of India, it is threatened by retaliatory killings to reduce crop depredation. Nevertheless, this species is extremely abundant and widespread and there is little threat to its survival at present.

CONSERVATION

Owing to its spectacular appearance and religious associations, the Indian peafowl is protected in many parts of its range, especially in India, where it is considered sacred by Hindus.

STATUS

The Indian peafowl is classified as Least Concern (LC) on the IUCN Red List and listed on Schedule I of Indian Wildlife (Protection) Act 1972.

I have a friend who has them on her property and so she does get the shed feathers and they are just so gorgeous. she offered me some of those but with cats... had to say No, too much play temptation there..     the ratty looking ones she gives me for the cats to play with and they LOVE those..     Thanks for all the FAB info, once again.

It's so true that feathers fall out by themselves- its so cruel to pull them out, and it must be very painful- just mean and greedy.

Nyack,   You be a gal after me own heart... if one is to get a "title" why not make it LOOOONNNG and auspicious sounding... so Of course I shall be happy to call you Your Exellency, Presiding Honorable Royal Highness of the Hangman Game, as long as the grey matter holds up to do so... I do have my days (daze), so bear with me if I get the order reversed at time, You may have to remind me to go have a cuppa to jump start the title remembering part of the old cerebellum.  I shall have to keep a tin of Altoid mints nearby to give "a good slap to the ole cerebellum" I think!!  

Yes, I can imagine that pluck those feather out would really hurt, think about how just pulling one little eyebrow out can hurt like the dickens!!    Those feathers have a huge anchor/root to them too!! My friend does NOT pluck them at all, she just collects the shed feathers off her property when they shed them.  Sometimes by the time they shed them, they are kind of ratty looking, which is why so many people probably pluck them out  irregardless of the pain to the peafowl.   But sometimes the feathers she finds are in very pretty shape and she puts them in her floral arrangements.  She also painted her room with a paint effect that resembles the irredescence of the feathers.. very very pretty combos of blues and greens and a little shimmer.

The child in me craves a tootsie roll pop (lollipop) every now and then so I do get a tootsie roll fix. So sorry I didn't share any of my dark chocolate but I'm a glutton for dark chocolate and I scarfed the whole thing down in one sitting. Now I'm watching my thighs grow! lol

It just isn't fair that the male peacock is so gorgeous with his feathers fanning out and the female is just a plain brown hausfrau. Where's the justice in that, hmmmm?

I agree, Lynn!!  Just like the lady Cardinal is brown and the guy gets that lovely Ruby Red frock to wear!!!!   Where is the justice in that??     I like earth tones just fine, but hey, how bout a bit o Bling for us animal lady babes too??  Maybe we could teach em to weave some flower necklaces or something to spiffy themselves up a bit, you think??
