Looks like a real interesting one, Nyack. May I have an A, please?

By the way, I went to my arthritis doctor today to check on my back and she took x-rays. No break from the fall but my back is a mess. Arthritis, osteoporosis, stenosis, scoliosis (curvature of the spine) disintegrated discs where arthritis has set in. You name it! There's an area that she wants to look at further so I have to go for an MRI next week, then see the orthopedist who replaced my hip and knee. Say a little prayer for me, ok?

Hello, Lynn- you really said a mouthful there! I am SOOO happy you went to the doctor, and am glad nothing is broken- but still- things sound pretty painful and I hope she gave you the right meds to relieve that.

Will say a prayer about that, and will look for updates

Thirteen-lined Ground Squirrel

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Thirteen-lined_ground_squirrel

The thirteen-lined ground squirrel (Ictidomys tridecemlineatus), also known as the striped gopher, leopard ground squirrel, squinney, and as the leopard-spermophile in Audubon’s day, is a ground squirrel. It is widely distributed over grasslands and prairies of North America.

It is brownish, with 13 alternating brown and whitish longitudinal lines (sometimes partially broken into spots) on its back and sides, creating rows of whitish spots within dark lines.

The thirteen-lined ground squirrel is strictly diurnal and is especially active on warm days. A solitary or only somewhat colonial hibernator, it often occurs in aggregations in suitable habitats.

In late summer, it puts on a heavy layer of fat and stores some food in its burrow. It enters its nest in October (some adults retire much earlier), rolls into a stiff ball, and decreases its respiration from between 100 and 200 breaths per minute to one breath about every five minutes. It emerges in March or early April.

The burrow may be 15 to 20 feet (4.5–6 m) long, with several side passages. Most of the burrow is within one to two feet (about half a meter) of the surface, with only the hibernation nest in a special deeper section. Shorter burrows are dug as hiding places. This ground squirrel's home range is two to three acres (0.8 to 1.2 ha).

Its primary diet includes grass and weed seeds, caterpillars, grasshoppers, and crickets, but it may also eat mice and shrews; it will viciously attack and consume cicadas if able to catch them. This squirrel sometimes damages gardens by digging burrows and eating vegetables, but also devours weed seeds and harmful insects.

It is well known for standing upright to survey its domain, diving down into its burrow when it senses danger, then sometimes poking out its nose and giving a bird-like trill. It has a maximum running speed of 8 mph (13 km/h), and reverses direction if chased.

The thirteen-lined ground squirrel is the namesake of the University of Minnesota Golden Gophers teams, and responsible for Minnesota's nickname as the Gopher State.

Stop Poisoning Ground Squirrels

PETITION~

http://www.thepetitionsite.com/423/424/173/stop-poisoning-ground-squirrels/

  • Target: Sandia National Laboratories, President and Laboratories Director, Environmental Management Department, Communications Officer
  • Sponsored by: Animal Advocates

A facility in Livermore, California, Sandia National Laboratories, admits that it is poisoning ground squirrels.

Studies have demonstrated that the continual cycle of seasonal culls is responsible for a larger population- not less. Killing the squirrels artificially increases food supplies to the remaining squirrels, the consequence of which is increased reproduction and a greater population.

Additionally, poisons are horribly cruel. They cause convulsions, vomiting, internal bleeding, gradual cardiac collapse, and a variety of other reactions that result in immense suffering and a slow, agonizing death. The most common poisons take several days to kill. And orphaned young end up dying of starvation and dehydration. This poison can also affect other wild and non-wild animals, including family pets, endangered species, and federally protected birds who make contact with tainted bodies.

We request that Sandia National Laboratories remove any remaining poison and work with particular groups to develop alternative, humane solutions to killing these animals.
