Signed and shared. I'm afraid of sharks but I don't agree with anything being tortured and murdered. They deserve to live in the ocean...and I'll stay on land [although, the land is probably more dangerous with all the humans walking around on it].
Signed Stop the import of Shark Fins to Canada today. Lydia, I think many of us are afraid of sharks and I don't want to meet up with one in the ocean. (although, the land is probably more dangerous with all the humans walking around on it]. Ya, many sharks on land
I knew nothing about shark finning until Capt. Paul Watson & Sea Shepherd got involved in it and started reading up. We have a large Chinese community in Vancouver and I was amazed to find out how many Chinese restaurants have this on the menu & the story behind it. Many Vancouver & Metro. Van cities were considering a ban until Toronto's ban was struck down by Ontario's Supreme Court as beyond the city's jurisdiction late 2012. I also read a Huffington post blog called "Is Baning Shark Fin An Equitable Way To Protect Sharks", which presents another side of the argument, and I hope I"m not going to be vilified for posting the link to this as I feel it's always important to know what both sides say in this complicated world: http://www.huffingtonpost.ca/kim-bosco-mo/shark-fin-ban-bc-vancouver-canada_b_2148847.html
This is a very hot debate all over. And what can be done about the large numbers of sharks caught as by-catch in commercial fishing? I don't see how how anyone can debate against the finning of live sharks and dumping them into the ocean to die a slow & agonizing death though, and I am very concerned about their dwindling numbers, much of which I feel has to be because of shark fin soup. I learned much about sharks at Shark Savers:
which starts out like this. (And there are links to petitions that can be signed here)
SHARKS' ROLE IN THE OCEANS:Sharks play a very important role in the oceans in a way that an average fish does not. Sharks are at the top of the food chain in virtually every part of every ocean. In that role, they keep populations of other fish healthy and in proper proportion for their ecosystem. How do sharks keep the oceans healthy? Read the rest at the Shark Savers link provided.
Kung Hay Fat Choy! I couldn't sign this because Canad. provinces couldn't be chosen but all Americans should be able to. Chinese New Year begins this weekend, and people around the world will celebrate. It’s a time when family, friends, and neighbors get together and wish for health, prosperity and happiness for the coming year. Symbolic red paper lanterns decorate doorways, and fireworks crackle and pop, ushering in the holiday with a joyous bang.
Sadly, among the meaningful festivities exists a cruel and outdated culinary tradition: eating shark fin soup. Every year, people catch millions of sharks, slice off their fins and throw them back into the ocean where they slowly drown. All for a bowl of soup.
HSI works and partners with organizations around the globe to curb this cruel, wasteful practice, and we're seeing progress! Be part of this important and fast growing global movement to protect sharks. Take HSI’s No Shark Fin pledge today!
People, cities, and nations are taking action to end the cruelty by pledging not to eat or by banning altogether the sale of shark fin products.
Five U.S. states, including California, three Pacific territories and numerous municipalities in Canada have banned shark fins. And the Chinese government has announced a phase-out of shark fins from official functions within three years. The European Union is also making strides: just last year they strengthened the existing ban on shark finning in the EU.

POOR PORBEAGLE SHARKS IN DESPERATE NEED OF YOUR ATTENTION (from Care 2 causes Newsletter)
What’s the Problem?
Porbeagle sharks breed slowly and only give birth to one or two pups a year, so any significant damage done to the population takes a long time to fix.

I rec'd a group of 4 petitons from ForceChange in an email today. I'm hoping I can view in browser and post some under appropriate thread topics and that the link will work:
Protect Great White Sharks. The recently legalized practice of killing great white sharks that swim into coastal Australian waters will have a devastating impact on the environment. The Australian government needs to stop this destructive practice in order to protect its fragile coastal ecosystem.
