Although this is not specifically cruelty to animals as such I am horrified that the civilized Country I live in allows this to happen. Bush meat being sold in Canada!
This one is to protect the communities downstream of the awful Tar Sands projects and although targeted to protect humans the Tar Sands also are responsible for killing thousands of birds and other animals due to the toxicity of the water and air. It came in a Sierra Club of Canada newsletter that I would be happy to send to anyone who sends me their email address. I have not figured out a way to get the email onto Care2.
I couldn't believe the first petition, Sue, had NO idea at all but googled it and it's confirmed on The Jane Goodall Institute of Canada Website: African bushmeat can be found in major European and North American cities, including Toronto and Montreal. So I'll sign petition for sure, thx for posting.
Already signed on 19th April, thanks Sue my friend xwendy k x
I can't get your second link to go to site, Sue. Not working for me.
Treehugger.com has the following article on it's site re bird kills from tar sands too:Birds Killed by Canadian Tar Sands Projects At Least Seven Times Greater Than Official Stats Show
Both petitions signed, Sue. Thank you for posting!
I signed the first one.
Dianne, that link is problematic sometimes. It took me three tries to be able to get it to work, that green circle just kept on turning. The third time it went straight there. Don't know what the problem is, possibly a very busy site, or maybe poorly run?
Thanks for the link you posted. I watched one of those documentaries on TV that showed residents of a First Nations Community down river from the works telling how many of them had lost relatives due to brain tumors and other cancers since the Tar Sands were put into production. One man had lost his entire family, 3 generations, to cancer, he was the only survivor. Too many babies are being born with deformities. The air where they live is toxic to breathe. To me this is Canadas SHAME and it does not look like we can stop it because it brings in so much money. Our Prime Minister does not seem to care how much harm it does to the environment or our fellow Canadians.
Thanks Sue, both signed.
SIGNED BOTH,THANK YOU SUE

Thx Sue, I tried second Petition again and IT WORKED. Forwarded to other Canad. email contacts. I saw a Doc. on communities downstream too, maybe on on Nature of Things?
Dianne, I saw that one, but there was another and I just cannot remember where I saw it. Possibly on APTN before Rogers Cable moved it to a channel my TV cannot receive. Glad you finally got the second petition to load.
Thanks to everyone who signed the petitions.

Alaska's famously charismatic sea otters are finally on a slow road to recovery. After they were almost wiped out by greedy hunters and trappers in the international fur trade, limits were placed on hunting -- allowing only Alaska Natives to hunt the otters, for their native handicrafts.
But the playful animals' recovery could quickly be derailed: The U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service is now trying to change the definition of handicrafts in a way that will likely lead to more sea otter killings.
Take action now to tell the Fish and Wildlife Service to stop its backdoor attempt at predator control -- it will hurt vulnerable sea otters.

How many farms in Europe are keeping pigs illegally in cages?
This seemed like a simple question. But, nine months after a partial ban on sow stalls came into force in the EU, the European Commission has refused to give us a straight answer.
What is more, it seems the Commission isn’t even sure how many nations are breaking this law. As you’ll see from our map, 13 countries are reported to be fully compliant. But five are ‘under investigation’, whilst information for Croatia – the latest entrant to the EU – is nowhere to be seen.
What we do know, though, is that at least nine EU Member states are definitely harbouring illegal cruelty. Please spare just a few moments now to call on the Agriculture Ministers in these nine nations. Ask them to enforce the law and protect pigs.
We must act now for Europe’s sows
As our investigations have shown, sow stalls are inhumane and out-dated – preventing pregnant pigs from turning around or even lying down properly. Every country that continues to break the sow stall ban is inexcusably condemning animals to unnecessary, terrible suffering.

The ivory trade is slaughtering elephants by the hundreds in horrific massacres that rip apart herds and leave orphaned calves to starve. But despite an official policy against selling products from endangered animals, Google still traffics ivory -- taking money from ivory sellers to promote their products. Google offers thousands of ivory items on its shopping sites around the world. Its lax enforcement of its own policies allow unscrupulous sellers to find easy markets for illegally poached ivory. Google needs to stop this horrific practice today.
Please join me in calling on Google to stop trafficking in ivory immediately. http://action.sumofus.org/a/google-ivory-trade/?sub=taf
Here is the link to the C2NN news item with the link to the petition.
Thank you for posting. I've signed and am now completely disgusted. What the hell is the matter with people? Ivory and bushmeat? I just got back from tsking sn up close tour of the oil sands ( or at least as close as an environmentalist can get, including sneaking in onto a site in a truck) and the devastation is more horrifying up close, so the petition was quite tiely for me. All this greed, cruelty and waste. I am glad there are good peoplelike you in this world.
Thanks a million for your comments Carla. It's impresssive that you were able to sneak onto the oilsands to get a closer look. I can only imagine the smell there, it looks like a complete dead zone where no living creature can survive. The only way I can help is to sign the petitions and pass them on. Those oilsands are going to end up being the biggest environmental disaster this country has ever seen. They are causing so much harm already with people living downstream getting cancer at rates far higher than anywhere else in Canada. The pipeline ideas are even more frightening.
Thanks Sue. It was quite the trip, which at times looked like a visit to a post apocalyptic waste land. All the garbage about government oversight and regulation seemed non existent, with all the focus on security and who has a pass or not.( I hid in the bunk of a semi, terrified they'd search). There is so much focus on paranoia and greed to get the oil, no one seems to be paying much attention to the mess. I have never before had the sensation of being deep in enemy territory and it was truly sad to see the destruction. They are also already digging their hateful pipeline, which is disturbing, they seem to think it is already fait accompli. I live on the BC cost, right on the water, and if these avaricous monsters have their way, it is only a matter of when, not if, we are up to our eyes in oil. Peace.
All Petitions signed & Shared---Thanks so much Sue!!--& Everyone for caring!!~xoxo~
All signed & shared.
Carla, our Canadian TV is being flooded with ads telling us about how good the pipelines will be for us and how good the oil sands are too. They are really pushing the Eastern pipeline. It is frightening how much $$ is being spent on trying to get us to agree to these horrendous ideas. We have to keep fighting as best we can. At least the ban on journalists visiting the oil sands sites has been struck down by the court as an illegal ban. Now hopefully the whole truth will be told and seen in the media.
Signed too thank you Sue
Sure they are letting the press see some of the ioil sand, nut it is kind of like the journalists in North Korea recently. They saw what they wanted them to see. The governemment now needs to remove the mozzles from the scientists and fisheries experts. What a country to live ib. The truth is being destroyed, hidden and twisted so that the filthy oil companies can rape the environment. Freedom of speech is being suppressed by Harper, who I am certain will have a cushy job with Enbridge or one of y and the environment. Something MUST be done.the others as a reward for being their lapdog and selling out his people, his countru
Carla, we just have to vote better next time around, and encourage everyone we know to vote too. It is long past the time Harpers government should have been replaced by a more caring government. More people need to get off their backsides and get out to vote. We need sanity again in the way our government runs this country!
Good Morning Sue,
While I agree that we need better leadership, they all seem tobow to pressure from their corporate masters. There must be a top down change where nig nusiness has no say in government policy. They re already shaping laws hich favor themselves and screw the rest of us, not to mention destroying the planet. Where is the democracy in that? The lobby system needs to go and government needs to get back to the business of running the country and addressing the concerns of citizens not big ag and big oil.
Thank you for the petition Sue. Signed but am so saddened by all the animal cruelty.
Carla I completely agree. Are you aware of the Worldwide November 5th protest against Governments and Corporations ruining things for the 99%? There are many news stories about this on C2. Don't have any links, but it should be easy to do a search inside C2 for November 5th protests to find out about it.
Val, most days it gets too overwhelming reading about animal abuse and having to see those awful photos posted. We all sign so many petitions every day because most of the time it is all we can do to help.
signed and now supporter
Signed Penguins in Peril already and shared. Thx.
Here is the story about Breezy from the Ottawa Citizen Newspaper. Such cruelty needs to be punished severely. Some days I fear for the future of humanity when such things keep happening. Breezy seems to be holding her own and has come through a surgery, but may lose an eye if it cannot be saved. She has more surgeries ahead of her. Thankfully Ontario is strengthening our Animal Cruelty laws and is introducing harsher punishments according to a news article this morning.

It is time to stand with our First Nations brothers and sisters to put a stop to the pipeline that will cause harm to both animals and humans if it is built. Here is part of the email they sent this morning....
Thanks for supporting the Yinka Dene Alliance’s Freedom Train last year. Today we write with an even more important and urgent request.
The federal government will soon make a decision on approving the Enbridge Northern Gateway tar sands pipeline and tankers project. The Yinka Dene Alliance of First Nations is committed to using all lawful means to stop this devastating project from ever being built through our territories, and has joined with other First Nations to create a powerful and unbroken wall of opposition.
We are asking you to stand with us to Hold the Wall.
In December 2010, First Nations across BC and Alberta came together in a show of unprecedented solidarity to stop the Enbridge Northern Gateway pipeline by signing the Save the Fraser Declaration.
Representatives of over 130 First Nations throughout BC and Canada are now signatories to this powerful legal document that protects the lands and waters we all rely on from devastating oil spills for all people and all generations.
Compassion in World Farming sent this disturbing petition this morning, please sign to stop the horrors the animals experience. If my info comes up, please delete and fill in your own.
Signed. Thank you Sue.
Sorry Sue, l am using a borrowed ipad at the moment and it does not seem to like 'change.org' petitions, so I cannot sign this one. Should be back to normal next week when my computer is returned.
Huge clothing retailer, H&M, ceased production of all its angora products last week, in response to horrific video footage released by PETA that shows rabbits screaming in pain as their fur is torn off at angora farms in China. Sadly, Zara is refusing to do the same -- at the time of writing, there are still 60 angora items for sale on the Zara website.
Workers in China were secretly filmed by PETA, plucking angora rabbits of all their long, soft fur while they scream. Plucking a rabbit without causing harm takes up to two weeks of gently removing the loosened hair, but here it takes only a few, violent minutes.
After this tortuous experience, which the rabbits endure every three months, many of them appeared to go into shock, lying motionless inside their tiny, filthy cages.
Sign the petition now to tell Zara to stop production of its angora products immediately.
Thanks Sue, Bruce and Wendy signed.
