If we can find a few more people to help you plant a couple of trees in Ohio we may be able to make an event of out it.
Where to find the trees?
NEW “WILDLIFE-FRIENDLY” TREE SEEDLING PACKETS AVAILABLE
http://www.ohiodnr.com/news/aug06/0830seedlingpackets.htm
COLUMBUS, OH - Landowners seeking to create wildlife-friendly woodlands can now order mixed packets of tree seedlings from the Ohio Department of Natural Resources (ODNR) Division of Forestry for delivery in spring 2007. The new packets are available as part of the annual sale of Ohio Conservation Seedlings.
ODNR is now accepting orders for specialty packets, which come in two sizes: 250 or 500 seedlings. Both mixed packets include five wildlife-friendly tree species: red oak, white oak, American crabapple, white or red pine and hazelnut. Black cherry or American plum may be substituted for the hazelnut in some instances.
Just a Thought
GREAT IDEA TO PLANT THESE 20 TREES.
FOR SURE YOU MAY FIND LOVELY ONES LOOKING OVER THE SUGGESTIONS GIVEN BY TED (JUST ABOVE HERE...).
WILL BE WAITING TO HAVE YOUR NEWS ON WHICH TREES YOU HAVE CHOOSEN TO PLANT...!
WISHED THE ONES I HAVE HERE COULD BE OF USE THERE BUT, GUESS NOT!!!! GOOD LUCK!
DON´T FORGET TO POST WHICH TREES YOU HAVE BOUGHT AND HOW MANY STILL TO BUY...
JUST ANXIOUS TO HEAR ABOUT !
WISH ME LUCK,ALL DIRECTIONS-LOCATIONS DIFFERENT??
WHY AM I DOING THIS???..AGNES MADE ME!!!..HA-HA, JOKING TO SEE IF YOU ARE READING, I AM HAVING FUN, THIS IS GREAT, WISH EVERYONE COULD DO THIS!!!!
Augh,... I think that should be Nut trees!
Or fruit trees.
Please consider where you will be planting the trees first.
I highly recommend you take a walk in areas where you might like to plant a tree.
As you are walking,... try to expand your experience by identifying as many trees and bushes you can.
As you learn the names of the trees and underbrush,... you will find that your walks will become much more full of enjoyment,... as it will become like walking through a room full of the nicest people you have met and recognizing each of them,... remembering experiences related to each.
Walking in the wilderness is very healthy for your spirit. Perhaps you may develop the kind of drive that pushes you forward,...
And soon you may be asking me to help you find a piece of land where you can sculpture a forest just the way you see it in your mind!
Starting small,... walking through the wilderness you will likely find small clearings,... and you might think,...
"It would be wonderful to find an apple tree right here. Go get an apple tree and plant it there.
You might find a nice space where nut trees, fruit trees,... or even a Christmas tree would blend in so nicely,...
For example,... this Christmas,... if you have a tree (good for the soul just doing it),... you could get a live tree,... and after Christmas celebration,... you could plant the tree in a place where you could take your family and friends and celebrate there each year,...
You could even ask your friends to bring their own trees and each year the Christmas Crowd grows,... as the number of trees increase,... and soon you have a forest of trees and hundreds of friends that bring their children to
Honor and Appreciate their personal Christmas trees with their friends!
Anyway,... If you find a good place to plant a forest,... you could do the same thing with fruit and nut trees,... where others plant some,... you plant some,... and when the fruits and nuts get ready to harvest,...
Everyone gathers together and has a celebration,... and takes home the fruit and nuts.
If this catches on,... we might see every sizable town gathering and planting,... tending and harvesting,... and I would think that if the gathering happens once a month or so,... most people would attend.
The result would be large forests of fruit and nut trees near and around every sizable town,...
And that would likely have an effect on the Global Warming Effect.
Think of this,... the trees you plant now,... that the friends and neighbors help plant and 'celebrate' among or near,... will be growing for many years and producing great edible fruit and nuts.
But there is little to do besides celebrate.
So in the bordom of waiting for trees to mature and produce fruit,... there is more and more land to start again.
As each patch of personally planted trees is planted and the waiting starts,... find more land and do it again and again.
People will take pride in their efforts,... they will protect their garden/forest.
Whoa Nelly,... getting ahead of the program again.
Thinking 20 trees;
Just find some places where you think a tree would do well,... and then go find a tree to put there.
It is easier that way! And walking around in the outback is really healthy activity.
Again if you take friends along,... and everybody plants some trees,... the chances are greatly increased that you will continue to visit your trees and eventually you will be rewarded with wonderful fruits and nuts,...
If you choose to plant fruit and nut trees.
Also consider if you plant any kind of 'useful' tree,... someone will be paid to cut it down.
Fruit and nut trees are seldom cut down,... mostly because there is little market for their wood.
Your trees might live through logging and such,... because they have no $$$$ value.
But,... you will know the value of these trees,... each time you visit them!
Bill
I read most of the above and thought to myself,...
It is seed time!
Yep,... it is the time of year when trees drop their fruit, cones,... seeds!
So I originally wanted to suggest that everybody go out and find the seeds dropped by trees in your area.
This can be fun.
In Oregon people go Coning. This means going out in the country and walking around under the trees and looking for places where the squirles burry cones for winter food.
Don't worry,... they burry way more then they will ever eat. So we look for small cashes of cones,... load them in a bag,... and there are those organizations that grow tree seedlings that pay $$$$$ for those cones and seeds.
These organizations grow trees from seeds,... and they really do need people to go out and find the seeds they use.
You can likely find a seed buyer,... or even become a seed buyer. There are a lot of them,... so I would guess that if you become a seed buyer,... build a greenhouse (if you are interested,... I can help you!) and start growing trees for next years tree planting celebrations!
I think it is very important to learn how to make money growing and planting trees. It will give you and others incentive to do it!
Anyway,... you will find that most everything you want to do that includes planting trees,... there are organizations and foundations that will give you gigantic grants to do it with.
They have the money,... and by law they have to give them money to somebody,... the only problem they have is that nobody will do the growing of the seedlings and it is especially difficult for these organizations to find anyone willing to plant even 20 trees.
Imagine that you were serious about trees,... and needed a greenhouse,... and because you need a greenhouse,... you need land to put it on.
Well,... if you find a nice farm with some acres that could have a greenhouse on them,...
You could write up a plan,... and receive enough to
buy the land
build or have built a lot of greenhouse
also a home
also a new car
also a barn
also an income that would shock others
WOW,... THE AMERICAN DREAM,...
simply for wanting to plant trees!

THANKS FOR YOUR PATIENCE AND BLESSINGS ALWAYS, CAROL.
If you want to plant trees that will survive on their own, you have to be very aware of several factors. First, the kind of climate and soil they need. Second, what kinds of insects, plant parasites, and competing species exist where you intend to plant your trees? Pick trees that won't be eaten up. Finally, will the tree you want to plant, help or hinder other life where you place it?
For instance, where I live, it's temperate, and walnut trees grow wild. They get huge. However, their root systems kill other trees, the walnut hulls kill tomatoes and other plants, and of course they attract squirrels. They're a giant spreading shade tree. So planting one next to a fence where your neighbor's prize-winning tomatoes, roses, and other veggies grow, is a cruel thing to do.
On the other hand, planting one in a wooded area full of locusts and hedge-apples, could be a good thing to do.
If you come to a spot outdoors where you think a certain tree will be nice, check out the area carefully. There might be a reason it's not there.
Using my own area again, apple trees grow great around here. There are hundreds of orchards in this part of the state. However, you rarely see them growing wild, because although this is a great climate for apples, everything eats them. Apple saplings need fences and supervision to grow to adult trees in this state. A deer or turtle will eat them down to the root inside a day.
You also have to be aware of what other trees are growing wild where you want to plant. Cedar grows all over my state, like a weed. So do certain kinds of wild roses. Unfortunately that means that when you add an apple tree to the mix, you usually get a thing called "cedar-apple rust." It's a kind of parasite that needs both apples and cedar to complete its life cycle. It usually gets by on cedar and roses, but if you plant an apple near a cedar, this parasite just can't wait to gobble it up!
Also, if you plant a fruit tree, particularly an apple, you'd better be prepared to pick apples, because otherwise the fruit can weigh down the branches, break them, and kill the tree. Now you know why we're not just constantly finding apple trees growing wild. They are not low maintenance trees.
My parents have a huge yard in Kansas, and they tried to grow about a dozen little fruit trees. Unfortunately, they already had a gigantic spruce tree, and their yard was bordered by the neighbors' enormous sycamores, maples, elms, and oaks. The result was that the fruit trees never got enough sun for their fruit to be sweet. My parents got tired of fertilizing, picking off bugs, pruning, and nurturing, picking and fussing, only to get bushels of sour little peaches, pears, and apples nobody could eat. They also got very tired of the mounds of rotting fruit under the trees when they didn't pick the fruit.
So half the trees became fragrant firewood, and the other half were left to go wild. They still flower and fruit, but the fruit is not edible. It's hard, sour, and fit only for squirrels, deer, and raccoons.
Silver maples sound like a lovely idea if you live in a cool place. Some trees, like maples, oaks, elms, and locusts, will grow on their own, as long as nobody cuts 'em down. Sounds like you picked a good kind of tree for your area.
I know what you mean about dried-up trees, and such.
But when one grew outside a fence, or in the yard of an unoccupied house, the city would come and cut them down, to keep them from attracting "vermin." Sad, really.
WHO GOES WHERE???
Friday,05.Jan.07
HI CAROL... well, perhaps you were a bit confused trying to find which tag belongs to which tree... but no problem, at the end you will find your way out!
What is great is that YOU HAVE ALREADY THEM PLANTED IN THEIR PLACES....!!!! Soon they will be getting even more fixed to the soil and in a year or so will be "smilling" at you and thank you for having planted them.
Just don´t forget, if too dry for 3 or 4 days, do go and wet them! Not between 11am to 3 or 4pm, when normally it is too hot and then roots can be damaged.
Try to wet earlier in the morning or more at the end of the day. It is a happiness for a tree planter as I am to see my dear friend planting hers far "up above me" in USA !!!
CONGRATS FOR THESE TREES YOU HAVE PLANTED. NOW, START PLANNING TO PLANT 20 MORE !!!
Brasilian treehugs!

Well, here is a photo of the very first sprout of my Japanese Lantern (I am still trying to find the correct name, if not this one...) flower tree planted less than 2 months ago!
I hope that the most in 10 days will have it fully bloomed... will post you a photo of it (and of the second sprout that is coming out!).
It is so good for the eyes and for the environment to have these trees planted...
ANYONE ELSE PLANTING TREES ??????
Threehugs to all our Members!

I m doing that too i suggest planting things native to your area.. i am doing "red buds" have no idea what the correct name i s they grow wild in our mounatins here in virginia.. it is inexpensive and they are hardy here to they should do well.. a great way to fill the empty spaces where other trees have been killed or died from who knows what.. saving land from erosion and making this world beautiful or i should say more beautiful .. have fun and keep us posted ..
virginia
Over the last 6 yrs I have planted 1 fig, 3 lemons, 1 grapefruit, 1 satsuma, 1 red maple, 1 Bradford Flowering Pear, 1 Acer Jap. Maple, 3 pecans and 1 crabapple. There is another tree I got years ago as a stick and it is now growing nicely although I'm not sure what it is. I really like to plant shrubs, hedges, trees and flowers that will encourage wildlife to eat (nuts) or butterfly and hummingbirds to suckle.
Those within the Monarch butterfly range should plant plenty of Milkweed as this is the only bush the Monarch will lay her eggs on. There is a shortage of these plants. You can get free seeds or 5 plants/$10.00 at www.livemonarch.com
Thursday, 29.March.07
VIRGINIA, your advice is great, one should always plant those that are native to our places. No risk for killing or damaging the existing plants, a serious risk when you bring into the local environment a plant that does not belong to that area.
Would it be possible for you to take a photo of this one - the "red buds" - perhaps we can find a member who identifies it and has the "correct / scientific name"...?
With these planted, avoiding erosion, keeping the soil humid and protected, in a few couple years it may be possible to plant new trees where the old ones died.
Hopes you will be planting a lot of a lot of these red buds...
Plenty many Brasilian treehugs to you dear friend!
Thursday,29.March.07
VICKY it is great that you have all these fruit trees planted. I usually plant also a lot of palm trees because we have some birds around here that just LOVE the nuts (seeds) from! and they help me to get strong seedlings to, afterwards, be planted in the forest behind and around my place.
Am not sure about the Monarch butterflies being in my area - will have to check. We have a lot of all kinds of butterflies around here so, if the Monarch ones are here...well, will also go and plant more "Milkweed" for them! Will check in the link you posted to see if there is any suggestion as to these where I am.
Oh, just to add, we have plenty hummimbirds around, so colorful they are!
Vicky, get my plenty many Brasilian tree hugs dear friend!
GREAT GREEN THUMBS UP AGGIE!!!

VICKY, I CANNOT BE OF MUCH HELP ON WHAT YOU HAE TO PLANT TO HAVE THE SQUIRRELS AROUND (MINE, THE ONES THAT LIVE HERE) THEY EAT MAINLY THE SEETS FROM PALM TREES FOR WHAT I HAVE BEEN ABLE TO OBSERVE. When I lived in the Colorado Rocky Mountians, I tooka job in reforestation, which is planting trees in the old burnd out areas after the fires have passed.
We planted tens of thousands of Colorado Blue Spruce. IT is long and hard work but a rich rewarding feeling to know that I hav e helpd the forest get a faster re-start while helping the world get more oxygen.
I admire an applaud all your efforts and thanks for sharing your pictures and expereinces here with us all.

YOU REALLY HAVE TO FEEL GOOD ABOUT PLANTING AND RESTORING SUCH A LARGE AREA, I LOVE BLUE SPRUCE--JUST PLANTED A FEW NOT LONG AGO...THEY ARE VERY SMALL..
IT SEEMS THE PLANTING IS HARD, BUT THE NURTURING AND WEEDING, FERTILIZATION AND MAKING SURE THEY DON'T GET TREE DISEASES IS ALOT TOO!! PLUS YOU HAVE ALOT OF WILDLIFE THAT NEEDS TO EAT, SO I KINDA FIGURE 1 OUT OF 5 WILL MAKE IT HERE--THE REST GOES BACK TO MOTHER EARTH..![]()

AS YOU ALL KNOW WE HAD A REALLY BAD STORM THIS WEEK, WE WERE HIT HARD DOWN IN LOWER OHIO!
MY NEW BLUE SPRUCE, I PLANTED AFTER CHRISTMAS HAS ABOUT A QUARTER INCH AND MORE ICE ON IT, ALL MY TREES LOOK LIKE SHINNY,CLEAR POPSICKLES. I HOPE THEY ALL MAKE IT, ALOT OF THE BRANCHES ARE BROKEN ON THE SMALLER TREES AND ALOT ARE LAYING ALMOST ON THE GROUND.
BESIDES THAT, ALL IS GOOD HERE!
HOPE YOU ALL DID OKAY THROUGH THE STORMS THAT WENT ACROSS MOST OF THE STATES THIS WEEK, SENDING YOU ALL A BIG HUG!!..![]()

Hi Carol! Hope your heating didn't go out with all the cold and ice you're experiencing your way. I love spring cause it is so exciting to see which plants/trees were resilient enough to make it through the harsh winter. To see their little green buds popping out is something I look forward to.
Anyway, I read somewhere on Care2 about a group that gives 2 trees (probably seedlings) to every couple in India that is getting married. One for the bride and one for the groom. I think this is a great idea and I'm wondering if they donate in other countries, too! I will try to find the link and post it here.
Have a great day everyone!

I PLANTED A BIG GARDEN AND HAD TO HAVE 7-TONS OF DIRT DROPPED, IT WAS A BACK BREAKER..LOL..STILL RECOVERING BUT GREAT EXERCISE FOR SURE.![]()
I RAN INTO SOME POISON OAK SOMEWHERE WEEDING AND JUST GOT OVER IT--SO EVERYONE BE AWARE OF THE POISON IVY, OAKS, AND SUMAC IN YOUR GARDEN AREAS LURKING, AND AROUND YOUR GARDEN HOSES, ECT. IT TOOK 3 WEEKS TO GET RID OF THE OAK THING AND I HAVE A SCAR ON MY HAND FROM IT EVEN THOUGH I DIDN'T ICH AND HAD DOCTOR GIVE ME MEDICINE. I WAS JUST WEEDING AS USUAL AND STILL DON'T KNOW WHERE IT IS HIDING?--SO WEAR GLOVES THAT HAVE PLASTIC OR SOMETHING ON THE FINGERS SO THE OIL DON'T GO THROUGH.
PLUS REMEMBER THE OIL FROM THESE PLANTS CAN LAST A YEAR ON YOUR SHOES , COAT WHATEVER-SO MAKE SURE IF YOU EVER GET IT- TO WASH EVERYTHING SO YOU DON'T PICK IT UP NEXT YEAR--CAUSE IT WAS A REAL BUMMER!!!![]()
MY ONE BIG PINE TREE DIED? IT WAS 6 OR 7 FET TAL, HAD PUT IT IN AROUND 2 YEARS AGO AND WE HAD THAT FROST AND IT DIED? BESIDES THAT EVERYTHING ELSE IS IN BLOOM OR COMING OUT OF HIBERNATION AND THE HUMMINGBIRDS ARE BACK.![]()

I have talked often about Natural Heaters,... and nobody asked questions so I never really explained them.
Hearing that your pine died really hurt,... so here's something you can do about the new trees.
I talk about the gazillions of dollars the sanctuaries will make if we could just FIND ANYONE willing to rescue people.....
One of the ways we will get some of the money is to have the rescued people use FAAP equipment and resources to learn the gardening business. The kind of gardening business where we trim trees for people, mow lawns, tend gardens, and haul away all that organic waste.
Carol,... if you were to get a small crew going,... get some accounts,... there are a lot of people that will gladly pay you to have your 'crew' come by and tend their yards or prune their trees.
This crew would fill a truck with organic debris almost daily, sometimes several times a day. The people paying will actually pay for hauling the debris away,... dump fees, just a whole lot of money,... so their property looks snooty to the neighbors.
You find some people that will do gardening for a place to live, and food to eat. Make sure they understand FAAP,... because instead of paying them,... thus making them pay taxes, and other expenses that come with being paid money,...
You receive the money,... you buy land, you get motorhomes for the workers (temporary housing),... and then as the money rolls in you buy real houses for them to live in till they move on,... and you feed them with the food they grow for you. Let them call you MOM and they will love you like you loved Agnes.
Ten workers should be able to buy the land, Motor homes (temporary housing) then real houses, (new workers in the temp housing) and electric cars, and grow enough food so that there is very little for them to 'pay for'. Be a good mom to them, a great leader (smiles and hugs) and start small and build up.
With your management and help,... the ten workers and their families should be living in houses you bought or had built in just a year or two. Gardening pays well if the money is spent wisely.
If someone wants to leave the FAAP effort,... figure what $$,$$$ the person would have made if you would have paid that person. Use that amount of money (or credit) to help the family start a business of their own,... and a house of their own and give them the car they have used. Do not pay them,... they will have to give a huge amount to the government.
By the time you want to buy them houses, I will explain how to do 'no money down' house purchases,.... so that wont even require any money. The payments on the houses will be covered by their new business.
Now about that heater. It would be better to have the crew dig a large deep pit somewhere near your house (so you can heat your house without a gas or electric bill). They would grind up the organic debris and use the ground organic material to fill the pit.
When the pit is full,... keep piling it on. As you start filling the pit,.... put in water lines, black plastic water pipe would be my suggestion,.... and layer the pipe so that the water runs through the pit and through the organic debris. Install a good water pump at least in one end.
You can do this with air,... but I am not sure if it would deliver the heat as well,... possibly even better,... you can experiment with this.
You will notice right away that the organic material will get very hot,... about 110 to 125 F. Run the hose anywhere you want to have heat all winter,... because the center of the pile will remain hot all winter.
This will raise the area temprature,... hopefully enough to keep the trees from freezing, yet cool enough for them not to bud.
If you get far enough ahead,... you can build a greenhouse over your entire property,... and then the pile will keep the entire area warm enough to grow a year round garden. Selling fresh picked veggies in mid winter will keep the crew busy and the neighbors will support you with their help and money.
Cherish your crew and they will each start a sanctuary for you,... and ten sanctuaries will save hundreds of people and thousands of animals.

As spring approaches at a slow, slow, cold, snowy light at the end of winters final nap, it is time to started on planning all your projects..
My last few years have been tied up out of town and now with the final passing of my father at the holidays, it was then my start to start planting early! I planted a few big trees-bushes of course for him(in memory)--he was a tree hugger too, back in his days! Then I preceded to plant bulbs all around the trees, for each season from earliest spring to latest fall, and then finished with pluma grass in the background. A memorial here at my home where I can salute his life with living beauty in his memory!
Now that spring is around the corner I hope that you all start to dust off your garden gloves, dig out your seeds and shovels preparing for many a lovely tree, flowers, seeds, bulbs, grass, planting, or flowering spring, summer and lots of fall colors too-with many fragrances to catch your breath away! Yes around the corner is all them colors and designs to sparkle our eyes and admire all the work you've done over the years.
This year I am starting with a small pond and a vegetable garden again. A little smaller than last year, since I was not home much last year-- but my neighbors surely loved the fruits of my garden and I hope to enjoy them this year myself and share once again, ecspecially since I heard the corn and beans were soo good but the tomatoes flopped!
Enjoy the rest of the last of these cold days and to know that spring is hiding around the corner taunting us with what is to be a wondrous spring and rest of year! Have a an amazing week with much fun and many memories.
Hugs-Carol...
thank goodness for spring, no more snow. time for green to show, everyone get ready to start planting trees and bulbs.
Time to dust off the shovels and rakes, and plan your gardens, in a month it will be time to plant again...
Good luck with all your planting projects!!..![]()
Have a wondrous spring!!..![]()

SO WHAT PROJECT ARE NEXT, WE PLANTED ALL THOSE TREES LAST SUMMER. WHAT KIND ARE WE PLANTING NEXT. AND THE NEXT PROJECT. GREENHOUSE????? LOVE YA AMANDA
Hiya Carol,
miss you much earth sister! Just got my free arbor day trees, but too small to put outside so going to pot them in house first to get them a little larger. Then not sure where I am going to put them this year. I would like to have one for me & my new hubby to grow with - May 9 is our one year anniversary, but not sure where to put it as we rent this house and won't be here forever so don't want it here. There is a state park down off the Maumee river where I go a lot to watch nature or pick cranberries & black walnuts, and I thought of putting one (or even all of them!) there, but not sure how to go about getting permission.....don't think I am allowed to just go digging there, even if it IS to help by planting new trees....any suggestions?
I hope you remember me as I have thought of you often and your invitation to me, and I miss talking to you my dear friend.
It was a tough road when my father passed last holidays, back and forth out of town always but home and keep trying to catch up--just got to this one here!! MISSED YOU TOO!!! One Year Congradulations cause this means a year and over a half now-right..![]()
.
Soo glad to run into this Andrea, and the invitation stands of course, anytime just e-mail me and lets talk and catch up lady--you were like a sis, sorry lost touch so much going on.. Hope you found a place for them trees but if you plant them together it will take a few years for them to grow at lenght anyways and just move them when you move--I always did and have flowers, plants from 20 years ago still, like an old friend drag them with me always..![]()

The ones I planted from Arbor Day are 6 feet to 8 feet now and they replaced 3 that did not live for free-they are guaranteed that way..Been busy this last year planting and then leaving, my daughter helped alot with the planting too and with mom...Have 14 chickens now, they started to lay eggs last month or so, they are really neat to have as pets, plus still have the hermit crabs and my dog, planning on my next rescue pet and what to plant this year, thinking all pine trees, and then fruit ones for the ones that don't look so hot..
What is with the weather here-Cold and Cold and then some-take care and reply..![]()
