 Don't Let This Happen to the Armenian Forest!

This alert isn't about legislation or global warming.  It isn't even about an issue that is happening here in the United States.  It's about an ancient ecosystem, an unfriendly government, and environmental activists in another part of the world who need our help right now.

Teghut's forest is located in Armenia and is an ancient, pristine forest in a largely deforested nation.  Over 1,500 acres of this forest is about to be destroyed to accommodate a massive, open-pit copper mine.

Environmental activists in Armenia are trying to battle the mine, but without the freedoms of speech to which we in the U.S. are accustomed, and with a government openly siding with industry, they need outside pressure to make their path easier.

Send a message to the U.S. ambassador to Armenia, asking him to stand up for Armenian protestors, and the forest.  Your message will be cc'd to the Armenian government so that it knows people in the U.S. are paying attention to Teghut forest and the activists in Armenia trying to save it.

You might point out in your letter that:

• The mine will not support long term economic development
• Mining will create air and water pollution destroying habitats and damaging communities
• A biologically diverse, global treasure will be at risk - including its already endangered species, like the Caucasian Persimmon and Gray Bear
• There are other ways to create jobs and stimulate the economy - like turning Teghut into an eco-tourism destination.

The Armenian Copper Program, operator of the infamous Alaverdi Smelter that is crippling the health of the surrounding population, has already received support from Armenia's Ministry of Nature Protection to strip the trees and dig the pit.  But it's not too late to put a stop to it.

Armenia is sensitive to international pressure, particularly from the United States.  Let's show the government of Armenia that the U.S. is paying attention and doesn't like what it sees.

As you know, the Boreal Forest is getting more and more attention as not just Canadians, but people all around the world, learn about the global importance of this forest ecosystem.  Despite the widely known benefits of Boreal Forest protection in terms of fighting global warming and protecting threatened species like the woodland caribou, Boreal Forest destruction continues and intact areas are being logged.

Greenpeace is trying to turn the concern over Boreal Forest destruction into action and using the pressure of the marketplace to try and transform the way logging happens on the ground and bring about major protection of this dynamic and crucial ecosystem.  We need to escalate our work and put pressure on the very companies driving this destruction.

We have released a new report entitled, Consuming Canada’s Boreal Forest: The chain of destruction from logging companies to consumers which will name names and highlight the large customers of the worst logging companies.  You can read the report at www.greenpeace.ca/e

Logging companies are cutting down Canada's Boreal Forest and destroying this ancient forest at an alarming rate. Three of the largest companies involved in this destruction are Abitibi-Consolidated, Bowater and Kruger. These companies are regularly clearcutting large areas, some the size of 17 000 football fields. As one of the world’s last remaining original forests, Canada’s Boreal deserves better. We need your help getting the message to The CEOs of Abitibi-Consolidated, Bowater and Kruger: Canada’s forests are not disposable.

Greenpeace is calling these companies to account - over the next few weeks and months we will be putting pressure on these companies to clean up their practices. We need your help in letting these companies know that Canadians - their customers - want them to clean up their logging practices.

Help cut off financial support for the government-sponsored genocide in Darfur. Ask Fidelity to divest now from companies that help fund the genocide!

A few weeks ago I wrote to you about divestment - a crucial effort to cut off funding for the genocide in Darfur.

By withdrawing investments from companies that help finance the genocide, we can build economic pressure to end the atrocities.

That's why we are calling on the investment firms with the largest ties to Sudan, such as Fidelity, to divest their holdings now, before more lives are lost.

Fidelity is a major holder of PetroChina, the Chinese oil company that is one of the biggest offenders in helping to fund the genocide in Darfur.

Despite complaints from concerned citizens and investors, Fidelity has not accepted responsibility for its role in investing in companies that help fund the genocide in Darfur and has refused to withdraw these investments.

While diplomacy is crucial, most international efforts have failed to get through to Sudan.

But money talks -- Sudan has been very responsive to economic pressure in the past.  That is why we believe divestment could be highly effective in forcing Sudan to cooperate with the international community. 

Divestment helped end apartheid in South Africa in the late 1980's and it can help end genocide in Darfur in 2007.

It is so sad to see what is done to the children and their families, a suffer that is never forgotten, even when, as in your case, you had the lucky of being with her when adult. As you said, you missed a huge amount of years that you could not follow the growing up, studies, happiness and problems... It is very sad that the System has such a huge amount of fraud. on the fraud, as a grandparent I had to wait until my only grandchild was the age of majority to even see her. We now have a close relationship, but it is so hard to realize how much I've lost out on.Most of the child support went into her mother's stomach in liquid form and anything that was really needed had to be supplied extra in gift form. I would have given anything to have had a relationship with her as a youngster, but hindsight is 20/20.
