Website Reviews!- want someone to review your site? June 09, 2005 1:48 PM

This thread is to get feedback on your website. If you want advice on making it better, if it looks good to others, if something looks wrong, etc...

Just post your website and add any info about it.

Anyone can review it, please feel free to share your ideas and speak up! Even if you are brand new at all of this you can still say if you like it or not

But remember try to be kind, everyone is different levels of learning and we all have to start somewhere!

ok June 10, 2005 9:11 AM

well this is my site. I've changed it a bit and I've changed the address. It is now http://www.geocities.com/witchofthemoonlitpath
It is a site about witchcraft and my views on it. I know it is a bit rough around the edges and I am constantly updating it trying to get it looking great. I am new to website design (in fact all I have learned has been because of this group!!)
I think the CSS sounds hard but then again I may just be having a "duh" moment...LOL
I also have a question about fonts. I found one I loved and the site looked great...BUT I checked it on another computer and the font was not the one I was using and it looked horrible! What can I do about that? I find Verdana boring.
If anyone has any comments about my site or constructive criticism it will be welcomed.
Thanks,
Aislinn

It's me again June 10, 2005 9:16 AM

I've been thinking about having an entrance page for my website and making my index page smaller...moving some of the things to new pages. What do you all think? Is there too much information on the front page, too overwhelming?  [ send green star]  [ accepted]

Aislinn June 10, 2005 9:28 AM

It looks good. Personally I find it easier to navigate on sites with an index. I give up quickly when there is too much information on one page, but this is me, I don't know how others feel about it. I like your choice of colors, but too much info on one page with those colors is hard on the eyes. .  [ send green star]  [ accepted]

 June 10, 2005 1:31 PM

Aislinn it does look very nice

in fact all I have learned has been because of this group!!)

You can't even imagine how good that makes me feel!! Glad I could help!

CSS just seems confusing at first because its very different, but once you start doing it, then its so simple!

I also have a question about fonts. I found one I loved and the site looked great...BUT I checked it on another computer and the font was not the one I was using and it looked horrible! What can I do about that? I find Verdana boring.

Yes fonts will only work for the person who has the font on thier computer. I have tons of beautiful fonts but if I used them as the font on my site like almost no one would see it and it would just go to thier natural normal font they have it set to.

So you need to use a normal font, or you can list several fonts so if someone doesn't have one they may have the next one.

This site shows the normal default fonts you can use:
http://www.ampsoft.net/webdesign-l/WindowsMacFonts.html

most everyone will have those.

To add multible fonts the code is:
<font face="Arial,Verdana">text</font>

Just put a , in between the fonts. The first one will be used unless they do not have it, then it the second, etc...

So put the font you love and want first, then your second choice, etc... just make sure they all look nice that size and on your site! Some fonts don't show up well as a certain size.

I love the light pentacles you have at the top of the page! Very pretty!

I love the font color too!

You may want to center some of your content on the main page, and change the size of some of it, like give the headers a bigger size or a different color so people can skim through and see your different thoughts on that page.

Also for your navigation links you could try grouping them and seperating them with an image or a title, one one site I had I made all the titles of each section in my nav have a line over and under them. Its easier for people to follow.

You have the <body> tag twice:

<body>
<!-- following code added by server. PLEASE REMOVE -->
<link href="http://us.geocities.com/js_source/div.css" rel="stylesheet" type="text/css"><script language="JavaScript" src="http://us.geocities.com/js_source/div03.js"></script>
<!-- preceding code added by server. PLEASE REMOVE -->

<body bgcolor="#000000"Link="#009999"ALink="#CC0000"VLink="#FFFFFF"><font face="Verdana"Size="6"Color="#9999FF">

Just remove the top one.

You really did a great job! And thanks for the link to my site btw

hello June 11, 2005 11:35 AM

Oh...I would really appreciate your reviews of my new little website: http://www.freewebs.com/alabutterfly/  I haven't really publicized it yet...so far, have just invited some family and friends.

This is all new to me...my first shot at it.  Nothing fancy, in fact, perhaps a little hokey?  Just some poetry, fotos & stuff, and some jazz notes...thinking of adding some of my art later.

It's a freebie so I'm not sure how much longer it will be up before they start adding banners & crap but I think I have the option of paying a small monthly premium to avoid those being added.

So far I can't figure out how to manipulate the title text sizes any differently as that part seems to be pretty much fixed.  The background template I chose was from their menu of canned formatting.

I've also noticed that sometimes there is a delay in the music starting on each of the seven pages.  I choose the background music from their midibank but a friend who owns a studio said they sound more like WAV files to him...so I don't know how that's going to affect my size limitations...or if they take downloads from their own midibank into account.

I will appreciate your critical feedback...I'm not sure if I'm on the right track with it or if I should start all over and do something lighter and fresher than its dark pensive mood....Thanks.

I started with that same template. Here's my site after nearly a year: stonethegardener  I think it's well worth learning enough HTML to get away from the easy site builder. I pay $10/year. I couldn't stomach the banners. I personally like your taste in music. For most websites, bg music is a bad idea. I think that your [arts] website  may actually fit in the exceptions.
I like your pictures.

You might want to change it so people can't drag and move the frames?

You don't have to ofcourse the code is noresize="noresize" if you want to.

Its a nice site Very creative & interesting, I'd love to see more content added.

I like the blinking guestbook link, it draws your attention in.

You may want to edit your guestbook to match your site more though.

You may want to add a header frame, and put your site name or something there to kindof bring the entire site together. Or maybe just at the top of the left menu put something.

I am kindof curious about the right frame scrolling so far to the right?

Anyways great site! Keep up the good work!

I should actually delete that post because I decided over the weekend that the site is going thru a major redo. I'll repost when that occurs. Thanks for the input.  [ send green star]  [ accepted]

Alabutterfly June 29, 2005 3:17 PM

aww I love the butterflys flying around Very neat that when you click them they disappear very user friendly.

I love your poetry btw and lovely photos!

Personally I love color even more so with the butterflys it seems it should be brighter. But it does look nice, and I like the colors you use, except the white for your title.

Do you use photoshop? You could make a nice header with your title and add that instead of just using words?

Did you figure out how to change the text size of your titles, because it looks ok to me?

I can't really help you much with the music files. You probably can e-mail them and ask the host though?

I am not a big fan of music on websites. The music you chose is lovely and does fit with your pages.

But to be honest I ended up hitting mute on my computer, after I began looking around. As everytime I changed the page it loaded up something different.

You may want to cut back on the music, like have it on the opening page only or just on one or two pages.

I really don't prefer site builders, as they seem to take away your complete control over it lol. My virgoness is showing lol but it may also be a way to help you learn? I am not sure how the one you are using works.

hmm does your host like give you so long banner free?

Great site I really enjoyed it

Storms,

I love your site. Beautiful work.  Although the Yahoo Geocities thing somewhat annoying, that's the price you pay for a free domain.

Best Wishes,

Pretty nice! I'd like to see some content to go along with the pictures. The fish pictures are nice, and will be much improved when you talk about the pond. for example, costs, time to build, varmints, fish names....that sort of thing.
I'm working on adding that sort of content on my site, it makes a lot of difference whether people look at more pages on my site or just click to the next site on their search.

Hi, I would love a review of my site. I've been experimenting with it for years.. for a long time it was just built with the HTML I had scraped up, but I'm slowly converting it to CSS. I've been having trouble, because it tends to look much different on seperate machines..so I'm constantly trying to re-adjust and find a happy medium.. my biggest problem at the moment is that on my friend's Dell (I have a Mac), it appears -very- dark.. and difficult to see..while on mine it is fine.. But anyway..a review or tips would be much appreciated..I"m always asking my viewers to let me know if they do or don't like something, but most really have no real opionion about web layout.. Thanks bunches! www.friesiancrazy.cjb.net  [ send green star]  [ accepted]

The Friesian Horse site is very informative! The dark background is easy on the eyes.  On the other hand, some of the pictures take too long to download if you aren't on a fast connection.  [report anonymous abuse]  [ accepted]

 August 28, 2005 8:48 PM

Okay, so patch up my images.. It's something I've known that I have to do..but am not looking forward to, so I keep putting it off.. The reason it takes so long is that I was lazy in the first place and instead of making two copies of each photo (one thumbnail, one regular), I just resized the regular files in the HTML.. But..I have been getting better..all the newer stuff I've been doing has been trimmed and doubled.. Thanks for the review Katherine! It's greatly appreciated..  [ send green star]  [ accepted]

Hi Everyone :) November 26, 2005 10:42 AM

Just wanted to say there are some nice sites here.  Mine is a business site, and I wonder if anyone knows Dreamweaver...?

All of a sudden we have a white stripe at the top and can't figure out why.  Could HTML from an information site have done it?

http://www.wifiglobal.biz

Thanks to all of you for your sites (smiles).  I am learning quite a lot from wandering through the pages here, Thanks Raven!

Hugs and Smiles,

Hi Sean--

Go back in Dreamweaver code view and add a cellspacing="0" attribute to all of your main opening table tags. This should get rid of your white line problems.

I created these sites using Homestead software (homestead.com), my Tarot site being the first one I created, it's about 2 1/2 years old, and I've worked on it the most.  The others are relatively new and I created them pretty quickly.  With my Tarot site, I had just almost no html knowledge (still don't have that much), but have learned a bit along the way, both with creating these sites as well as creating eBay listings.

But I'd like to learn how to create them without having to use Homestead.  That FTP thing, which I don't know anything about. A web designer I met on eBay told me I should learn "tables."  The thought of leaving Homestead concerns me, 'cause that's all I've known.  I wonder whether I can retain my sites, transfer them elsewhere?  Retain my domain names?  It just seems like it'd be a major transistion.  I wonder if it's best to just stay where I am, I pay Homestead $22 per month for hosting, unlimited sites, and my domain names are also included in that monthly amount.  They also provide me with an email for each site (e.g, Dove @ Tarotwithlove . com), but I think I might be at my limit on that.  Plus they are all forwarded to my main email address, and filter the SPAM, which is a very good thing.  And I don't really grasp all the particulars regarding bandwidth, my brain kinda balks at learning such things, lol  But, since Homestead is all I've known, I have no idea if all that's a good deal or not.

Anyway, these are my sites...

www.TarotwithLove.com (Tarot readings)

www.FreeBirdServices.com (home organizing service)

www.VioletStarDesigns.com (to create sites using Homestead)

www.DovesTreasures.com (needs a lot of work and updating)

www.Doves.Homestead.com (About Me site that others point to)

Dove, I was just reading your post from Dec. where you discuss paying $22/month! That is way too much! I would be more than happy to point you toward free sites, free web software, and/or learning HTML which i found to be a snap!

Well, your sites aren't loading, looks like you got wise.

$22/month?

I luckied out and one of my classmates (in a web design class) set me up with a domain through GoDaddy, it only cost me a pound of whole-bean coffee, since he used his paypal to do it. I think it actually cost $5.50 for a year. Oh, I should add he's hosting it for free on his own server (I think it's a v-server, through Plesk) with 100GB space & 500GB/month traffic. </brag>

Hey Stone, just sent you an email...  I created those sites with Homestead's software... and have had them (worked on them) for 3.5 years.  So how would I transfer my work to a free site?  I think my sites look pretty good and I really loathe the idea of starting from scratch after 3.5 years of working on them.  BUT, I do wish I could reduce that $22 monthly fee.  Also, Homestead has certain features and I'm wondering if they'd be available at those free sites, like email forwarding and SPAM retrieval...I never see the SPAM, it just collects at the Homestead site. I go in and delete it collectively a few times a year

Open to all input and suggestions.

No right click February 18, 2009 5:53 AM

I tried to send you an email, Dove... When I right clicked your address link, your site blocked me from being able to write you. Stupid email client loads too slow, crashes computer, doesn't work anyway from my laptop on wifi... Can only use webmail...

I suggest that you get a real contact form... then you can dispense with the spam that you get...& people can write you from borrowed computers... I use http://www.emailmeform.com/
See my contact page here:

Is this still your site:
http://www.freebirdservices.com/

It's terrible! It looks spammy...
