Introductions December 17, 2004 10:14 PM

Hello and welcome to Iguanas.  I put this group together for myself, and others who have...Iguanas and want to:

1. Just talk about them.  Iguana people love to talk about their iggy's!

2. Share things we've learned about their needs and care.

3.  Help others by sharing knowledge and experience.

Please take a moment to introduce yourself and your iggy, if you have one.  We're glad you're here!

Hello! December 18, 2004 12:32 PM

Hi all! Thank you for the invite. While I dont have an iguana right now I used to have a pretty deep connection with one years ago when I was in massage school. He was truly a huge part of the deep healing that was going in in my llife then. His name was ignasio and he wasa peruvian. So beautiful.

Anyway I am hoping in the next year or so we will have the space for a resue to come into my life. Therefore I want to learn all that I can as to how ot care for them when they are still young especially. Iggy was 5 and over 5 feet long so he was pretty well able to take care of himself except for food and water.

Have a namaste`~

Welcome Juliann December 18, 2004 2:27 PM

Buddha is one of three rescues that I've had, and the only one that came to me as a hatchling.  I believe this has a lot to do with the fact that he survived.  As you know from having your iggy, they require daily care, without exception.  Rescues are like having a child (scared to the point of being terrified) in intensive care.  They come with any number of problems, and depending on where they have come from (and what has happened to them) determines whether or not they will survive.

Not only do they need us, but they need us to be knowledgeable, patient, loving (Oh so loving), and have a basic understanding of their language.

Welcome to the group, and I expect you will get a lot of information, questions answered, and I certainly hope that as the group evolves, you will share stories of you and your iggy with us.

Hello! March 03, 2005 11:14 AM

Hi, Everyone!

My name is Jess, and I have a 1 year old iguana named Rex.

I'd like to share a little of my own short history with our lovely green pals. Before Rex, I had a hatchling we named Iggy, due to the kind of temperament "she" had, we decided she was a girl. After a month of falling in love with her and working hard to make sure we got everything set up, we lost her . According to our vet, her kidneys were failing long before we brought her home from the mom and pops store we ignorantly purchased her from, and they were too far gone for us to have saved her if we'd known the day we bought her .

After much research to find out what they, and we, had done wrong, I wondered if I should try again, perhaps getting an adoptee.
I was completely and totally heartbroken. We'd just finished building a custom  habitat, and it stood as an empty reminder in the main part of our house.  Part of me wasn't sure I could handle another loss.

By chance, we went into one of the larger chain pet stores for supplies for our other pets. There, in a rather good set up, was a lone iguana. I spoke to the manager, wanting to make sure they knew how much work went into their care, etc. and found out that this was to be the last iguana they'd sell.  Corporate orders from on high declared iguanas as no longer being a saleable "item". (YAY)

I watched him as he moved around their set up,  making sure he didn't seem destined to follow our beloved Iggy. He ate, drank, lounged under the spotlight, and seemed to be fairly healthy.  Hubby and I walked around, buying our other necessities and discussed in length the amount of work and concerns  involved in bringing him home.  We both agreed on one thing, Iggy was loved, and sorely missed. Having a second chance at doing something "right" felt good to us.

Since that time, Rex has become a wonderful addition to our family. We're having fun learning about his little quirks, likes and dislikes, and watching him "swim" at bathtime.  I am striving to learn all that I can to continue to encourage a healthy iguana, and am hoping I can share what I've learned in the past months to help others prevent the devastation of losing their own.

I'm looking forward to being a part of  this group and seeing what others have to share. Thanks so very much for accepting me into the group.

Hi Jess and Welcome!!!!!! March 03, 2005 11:26 AM

Hi Jess, and welcome to the group! Im sorry to hear about your loss its sad but alot of herps that are sold at pet stores that dont have the knowledge to care for them come to you with health issues, and damage that sometimes cant be undone, kidney failure in Iguanas comes from feeding them diets that are not vegetarian. I have heard of pet stores feeding Iguanas crickets because they dont do the research on these exotics and that can lead to kidney failure. Its sounds as if the damage was done to Iggys health before you got him. Im so sorry for you. Im glad you didnt give up,and that you know the commitment and work it takes to have one of these very special, but hard to care for reptiles in your life. The rewards are so worth it! Please share any tips, stories, thoughts, and pictures you have. Im really glad you are part of the group. Iggy hugs to you and your baby! Love,Lanie and Shakespeare
