Among the plants of the deserts, the best-known might be the cacti.
The cacti are plants labelled as succulents which means that they keep water in their leaves, stems and roots. The leaves of cacti have changed considerably with evolution to become mere thorns whereas the stems, on the other hand, took over the role of the leaves and become the area where photosynthesis take place.
Although cacti are often associated with desertic habitats, they are only found in Americas except for one species found in West Africa. Other succulent plants however inhabits various desertic areas around the world.
