anonymous There is a Pagan in your classroom July 22, 2005 4:44 AM

Well, I don't know about anywhere else, but here in GA United States, school starts in a couple of weeks. Not everyone, including myself can homeschool and we must send our children to public schools <shudder> As, I was at the Harry Potter opening, I ran into a couple of Pagan mothers and we began talking. A subject we came across was how to keep our kids be comfortable being Pagan as they get older and notice the predjuice. Well, myself being an advocate for Pagan Parenting brought up the "There is a Pagan in your classroom" letter. TO my surprise, they had never heaard of it. In case others had not either this is what it is.

A free letter you can copy off your computer to give to teachers and princples of the school that explains in laymens terms what being a Pagan is. This letter, I can't remember who wrote it, but the name is one it, is copyrighted to distribute and is a wonderful referance to Muggles, (sorry in my Harry Potter moment). I have given it out since my girls started school, and it has helped explain alot, and I have not recieved negitive feedback. I figured this will help alot of parents dreading the first Sabbet that comes around knowing they are going to have to explain what is going on at some time to their kids teachers.

Use this form it is great!! You will not regret it. www.stuorg.iastate.edu/pagan/paganinyourclassroom.htm

   Blessings and good luck,

Thanks Kieran!  Excellent resourse!

But it's not the schools or their staff that I have been having the problem with, it's some of the parents.  Like my neighbor across the street...first she wouldn't let her daughter eat our food.  Then she stopped letting her daughter come in our house...now they havn't played in several months............

Wow, thi sletter is awesome!! I don't have any kids so I don't have to deal with the public school system yet but thi sis really informative. I think I'm going to print it and just keep some on hand so when people ask me what is a pagan (usually in tones of disgust, or fear which I don't understand) I can hand them this.  Thank you so much for sharing!  [report anonymous abuse]

Thank you July 24, 2005 11:45 PM

My 14 year old daughter has tons of trouble with people here about her choice to study Wicca.Living in a place where there's a church on ever corner, and several small "store-front" churches along the main roads, very few here are even willing to TRY to understand. She's heard more than her share of "You're going to hell"s,from those she's around during the schoolday.Hopefully, this will at least help her teachers to understand that she isn't someone to be pushed aside,or ignored. They do that far too often, anyway, since she had some learning disabilities, and a behavioural problem.  [ send green star]

Thanks July 26, 2005 7:51 AM

I too agree that there is far too much prejudice in the world. Thanks for this opportunity to set schools straight. Hopefully if the teachers gain some knowledge, then they could help "educate" the parents.

It's sad that some people can be so barbaric in their beliefs, I do not criticise the religions of others, so why should they feel the need to criticise me for my faith.

I have a question though, why is it that we can have secular schools, catholic schools, christian schools, hindu, buddhist, jewish, muslim, and sikh schools, why are there no pagan or wiccan schools?

Believe it or not even Jedi is a recognized religion in Britain! Yeah, it's true!

Anyway, that's enough from me for today,

Love Morgaen xx

This is a wonderful resource for parents who need to educate the educators, however, in our schools, it's my child's classmates who could use some understanding. Alas, I'm not able to hand this out to their parents.. and in this town, I probably wouldn't anyway. I drive through town with my very out bumper stickers... but sending something home would be crossing the line and frankly, considering that a cross burning nearly took place less than a mile from my home (cross got erected but the person ran off when a neighbor, who happened to be a Pagan, caught him.. the coward headed up for the hills and was later arrested)? I'm not willing to stick my neck out THAT much... I'm just more the type to be head homeroom mom, help out when I can in the classroom and library and show them what it means... He's got his hands full with classmates telling him "the devil's gonna poke you in the butt with a pitchfork"... his teachers? They support parties that are more Pagan in nature anyway, since the school went so PC they're secular... no Christmas party, it's a Winter party... no Halloween party, it's a Harvest party.. LOL.. oh, it's fun.. LOL  [ send green star]

A Huge Thank You August 07, 2005 8:06 AM

I want to thank you so much for sharing this information with us.  We live in a small township that is not very accepting of alot of things.  So the schools are even worse.  But I do have to say that others outside of the community have asked questions about the pentacle and such and after I explained it to them they were more accepting.  They were always going on the Christian's beliefs.....I can even show this letter to others that don't understand.

So thank you again!

Thanks!  Wish I had this a few years ago, but I can certainly use it now.

Even something as simple as sports can expose prejudice.  When a parent learned of our faith she didn't want her child participating with ours!

i know it is hard for kids in school and in public any where you go no matter your religion but when people are different from what the government thinks you should be it makes it alot harder  [ send green star]

This is a bit delayed but I have to say - this letter is indeed a wonderful idea.  Just before the big holiday season in December - with everyone in the schools getting all excited about Christmas - I finally decided to print up a copy of this letter to send with my 7 yr old to school (of course she is in a small class size - 6 kids total - but still).  The next day her teacher had to talk to me about soemthing else before the winter vacation started - and she thanked me for the information.  Of course, she then added, "I hope there wasn't anything we did in class, like make home made chocolate candies, that went against anything at home" or soemthing along those lines.  It was a bit humorous that she was accepting that there was a little witch in her class - but she was also afraid something that had been done in class went against our faith.  I assured her how a lot of the traditions are similar so she had nothing to worry about.  [ send green star]

school April 12, 2006 5:18 AM

Just wanted to let you all know that I am back, and hope to become a productive member of the group again.
Sorry I have been gone so long, have been very stressed and have had some sort of 'flu' bug that I have not fully shaken yet, but hopefully it will be gone soon.

I also wanted to say that I too had a teacher ask me if Daniel was allowed to participate in the  Christian teachings and festivals in school.
I said yes, as he is allowed to learn about and respect all religions, he can make up his own mind when he's old enough. He's only 5 at the moment, so I want him to keep an open mind.

I am Pagan and his father is a Spiritualist, so he gets a mixture of both teachings, as well as being in a christian based school..

I hope everyone is well and happy

Love & Light to you all,
Morgaen xx

Here' s another one July 21, 2006 1:31 PM

I have used the Pagan in the Classroom article to give to the faculty when my daughter changes schools. Here is a link to another article I found helpful (only for the extreme people).

Let me know if the link works.

anonymous Thank you for sharing the letter! August 17, 2006 3:04 PM

I appreciate that! I'm an elementary school teacher, and I am not Pagan, but my husband is, and I always try to be conscious of what I say and what books I choose, etc. Thanks for the extra help! ~Michelle  [report anonymous abuse]

WOW July 10, 2007 6:30 PM

My daughter is six now and even though she has went to preschool and Kindergarten, she will attend public school in the first grade this next semester, I have to say as we are neighbors of her next teacher and knows our family and our personal beliefs as they are she and family has been supportive and non-intrusive to our beliefs her's (the Teacher and her family) are catholic.
But they are strong in their open mindness and friendship and showing her this letter she has strongly suggested to us to not only share this with our daughters school principle as well as she moves from grade to grade to keep her teachers provided with this letter thank you tall. and as for this Letter BRAVO BRAVO.

Thank you February 12, 2009 1:25 PM

Thank you for this letter.  My daughter is in daycare/preschool and I have been wondering if I should broach this subject and if so, how.  I really appreciate this.

Amazing! April 16, 2009 5:37 PM

I am so excited to see this letter...I was close to tears. I have been dealing with intolerance at my daughters school. I really think this letter will help. She keeps quiet about her beliefs, because she has witnessed others being mistreated for unjust reasons. I am confident this will help make a positive change. Thank you

The Letter to Schools July 07, 2009 8:28 PM

I just joined this group and I read about this letter. Thank you so much. I have 3 children and I have been in a situation where we have basicly been hiding in the closet. My husbands family is Christian and has no idea what we are because we fear that they will treat our children different. They are not open minded people. Anyways I think this will help greatly when my kids start school this year. I am going to send it anonymously so they are aware, but they wont be telling my husbands family about it. Again thank you!

... July 07, 2009 9:11 PM

I have four children ages 15, 14, 11, and 4.  My older two children don't openly discuss thier beliefs due to the fact that there has been so many unkind parents and children.  We haven't really had much of an issue with teachers as of yet.  My 11 yr old daughter is very spiritual and feels that she shouldn't have to hide but she puts up with alot of "your going to hell" and "you worship the devil" and "tree hugger" type comments.  At first it use to really bother her because certian parents wouldn't let thier kids play with her but now she just looks for those that care about her for who she is.  It's hard in a small "christian" town where Pagans are thought of as evil.  I don't have any answers on how to make life easier, just that it's so important to bring up your child with high self worth and let him/her know that this is probably going to happen so they arent caught off gaurd.  If any one has any ideas or suggestions I am always looking for ideas...

Thanks for listening, as another school year approaches.

Many Blessings
