Yet another book recommendation October 12, 2009 2:58 PM
Alright, I realize this thread is a bit old at this point, but I did want to add one book that came out this year.
Seven Spirals: A Chakra Sutra for Kids, by Deena Haiber and Aimee MacDonald
It is a picture book following 7 kids through a weekend of their lives, while giving a glimpse of the seven chakras and using them as themes for each of the 7 vignettes.
(Full disclosure: I DO know one of the author/illustrators quite well, so I'm not entirely unbiased. Having said that, I do think it is also just a Really good book, especially given how few books like it are out there.)
Thought this would fit in well with the other ones already mentioned.
Side Note: someone mentioned Miyazaki movies earlier (Kiki's Delivery Service and Nausicaa). I'd have to say Ponyo is a great example of how his movies are not only very much about the power of the natural world and seamlessly utilize magical realism, but also are just really fun movies.

wow...you are all so awesome. Thank you for posting such wonderful book selections. I cant wait for order some for my little girl. Any suggestions on music. My daughter plays the "Crow Women" track in a loop ALL day long (if I allow it). She feels most other "spiritual" music is better suited for meditation. She loves the rhythm and energy from Pagan songs.
Hey all!! Here is a post from our Pagan Parent's leaning tree group:
Raewytch has a book being published tomorrow, and here is her post on how to get it. I plan on ordering mine as soon as I can! She is in the UK but I hope our amazon will have it as well.
"It's called Natures Children - Celebrating the seasons in a pagan family ISBN 13 978186163.
Its available from the 1 august on www.amazon.co.uk - and direct from the publishers www.capallbann.co.uk I think you can order it from bookshops too but as its only just out it may be a few week before its available to order from shops.

My children (and I--heehee) love the Harry Potter series by JK Rowling. In fact we have book 7 (HP and the Deathly Hallows) on pre-order through Amazon with guarenteed July 21st arrival date.
My smallest child also enjoys a book called A Visit to Fairyland by Shirley Barber
And we are getting into a new series surrounding a character called Septimus Heap. The books are
Book 1--Magyk by Angie Sage
Book 2--Flyte by Angie Sage
Book 3--Physik by Angie Sage
It is a new series that kinda reminds you of Harry Potter. Which is good since that series is now coming to an end.....
My name is Jill often I am called mamabear because I believe children should be safe.I am amazed at the good I feel from this group.I was amazed at the books I saw listed.WOW.I homeschool my kids.Which freaks people out because first I'm pagan and the homeschooling part.Merry Meet everyone.

This is the site, I believe their is a book also, but we have the CD, "Circle Round And Sing"-'Songs for family celebrations in the Goddess traditions'.
My children and I just LOVE it. We play it at least once a day. It's fun and celebration for all ages.
Oh favorites are Nausicaa of the Valley of the Wind which is anime but shows a future world where it's man vs nature and highlights the importance of living in balance. Nausicaa is a heroine who can talk to nature in ways that frighten at first but then help her people find harmony with themselves as well as the planet.
Ferngully is good too. Woodland fairies meet a human who was shrunken down by magick and he learns that cutting the rainforest down is bad (he was working for a lumber company) and finds himself helping the fairies battle Nexus which is a bad spirit who would like to see the forest destroyed (consider it the dark, eternal greed of mankind)... it's not as scary as it sounds though.
Both of the above are animated.. the second is easier to find. There's also a Ferngully 2 which explores poaching of wild animals.
Well, those are good if you follow a nature based pagan path or want to help instill nature loving attitudes via entertainment.
Kiki's Delivery Service is another fun movie about a young witch who must go out into the world and find her own town so she can be in service to them. While there are fantasy elements (she really flies on her broom) there's a lot in there about self acceptance, independence, and where hard work and determination can get you (along with a little imagination and ingenuity). It's a fun movie, regardless. And hey, it's about a witch who's just doing her best... she's not perfect and she's not some princess figure who's out to save the world. Just finding herself.

Oh yeah, real quick, any ideas for videos? The only one I have found so far is The life and adventures of santa claus, based on the book by L Frank Baum.

This is fabulous! I just ordered ABC book of shadows fo rmy 2 yr old. She loves to 'read'! How many of the books listed here are board books? Right now she is an 'eater' and I only give her board books. I didn't realize there was so much out there. She mainly has books about animals, the disney classics, and nursery rhymes. But I would love to get her more board books that are wicca based. I'm so glad I found this group!
Blessed be,
Stephanie

I had no idea there were so many books for children.
I have a 3-year-old daughter, and now I have a lot of books to start looking forward to sharing with her.
I haven't thought of Mary Summer Rain for years. It was a book by her that a friend gave me on my sixteenth birthday that eventually led me to becoming a Pagan. I will look for her book soon.
Thank you all for your contributions.
Blessed Be.

Ellen Jackson does it again... while browsing through the picture books at a bookstore I found this one and read it.. it's GREAT!!!
Earth Mother by Ellen Jackson. The pics are rich, the story is timeless... in a nutshell, mother earth goes about 'decorating' the planet... swimming and leaving pearls of foam, part of and then some the planet... as she does these things she's interrupted by one of three beings... man, frog and mosquito... each praises her for giving them one to feast upon and lamenting the other that they're so pesty... and they beg her to rid of the pest so they can live without the 'downside'... but mother earth, of course, knows (as we do by the end of the book) that life is a balance... a web of existance.. an interconnectedness that allows us to live and others to live and so forth, even when death is part of the equation the end is a balance with life. Great message, very pagan and the artwork is worth the price of a hardbound alone. http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/0802789935/104-3179318-5644717?v=glance&n=283155&n=507846&s=books&v=glance
Another cute book is Earth to Audrey by Susan Hughes... a little boy befriends a new girl, in the neighborhood just for the summer... she's strange in her ways, speaking with bugs, feeling the earth, things way beyond fishing and riding bikes... he becomes convinced that she must be an alien from another planet... but in the end, her ideas are earthbound, just, a little different... a wonderful message of not only honoring the earth but also honoring, listening and being open to folks who are... just a little different than ourselves. A great message if ever there was one, especially with intolerance blooming like algae, ready to choke out reason.... http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/1553378431/104-3179318-5644717?v=glance&n=283155&s=books&v=glance

Merry meet, everyone! I'm so excited to be here! I've read the posts here, and I ended up just printing...there are so many book ideas here! I just wanted to take this opportunity to say hello to all. I'm Susan. I'm mommy to Sophie (8), Sydney (6), Sadie (4), and Spencer (2). I'm a homeschool mom, and a newcomer to the Craft. We are all very excited about the spiritual changes we're making, but I must admit it hasn't come without difficulty. I was raised Christian, and I had begun to raise my kids in the same faith. Yesterday, my 6-year-old started her blessing at dinner, and I thought...hmmm...how does this work now? Then, at the supermarket, my 8-year-old told an elderly woman from the community that mommy said we were going to be witches now. Gosh...out of the mouth of babes! I felt ashamed of myself, b/c I immediately jumped in that she meant we would be dressing up as witches at Halloween. I should not have been embarrassed of our choice of faith. I know that's a little off the subject of kids' books, but I wanted to give a little intro. For our family, we absolutely love the Serendipity books, and we are also huge fans of Shel Silverstein. His aren't so much mystical or geared in one direction or another; the stories are just absolutely hilarious!

Lots of pagan friendly kids books! October 13, 2005 6:22 AM
Jody Bergsma is a great artist/author and VERY pagan friendly check out all her works...Our favs by her are... Dragon; Sky Castle; and The Little Wizard. Faerie is also a good one.
All I See, Is Part of Me by Chara M. Curtis
In Every Moon there is A Face by Charles Mathis illustrations by Arlene Graston (the pictures are breathtaking! this is the perfect bedtime book)
Child of Faerie, Child of Earth by Jane Yolden and Jane Dyer
When the Root Children Wake Up by Audrey Wood (a retold version of the old story of the Root Children. Beautiful pictures and song at the end that my little boy likes to sing with me)
I was starting to wonder if there were any Pagan/Wiccan friendly kids books. I have read some of the ones already listed lol (Stellaluna, The Giving Tree).
I have to say that I did NOT like the Silver Ravenwolf young adult books. I read the first 2 (thinking maybe the series got better). I just think they are poorly written.
Merry Meet!
I found this site when I was looking for Ostara e-cards. Not sure how it turned up in that search, but I saw the topics in this group and decided to join.
I bought a book called Maiden Magick, by C.C. Brondwin, for my daughter, who is 11. We haven't gone through the whole book yet but it's a good one. We also have Tarot for Girls (can't think of the author off the top of my head.)
There is also a book called Wizard Crafts, pub. by Lark Books, and although it capitalizes on the Harry Potter craze, it has a lot of crafts that can be adapted for Pagans. My daughter loves arts and crafts. So far she has done the robe, wand, and treasure chest projects in the book.
Tommi Di Paolo's Strega Nona books are a favorite of ours, too (although she's getting a bit old for them.)
Tarot Games, by Cait Johnson, is good; however, only part of the book has games specifically for kids.
The Thundering Years, by Julie Tallard Johnson, covers various types of nature spiritualities, but that is for older teens, so I'm saving it until my daughter is closer to that age range.
The Whimsical Tarot with companion book is good for Pagan kids, as is Tarot of a Moon Garden.
BB,
Marie

My daughter has quite a collection too, I used to work in a book store while pregnant so I amassed a huge collection, here is a fair share of what she has.

Another one for young adults (pre-teen through adult really) is the His Dark Materials trilogy by Philip Pullman.
I simply adored the fantasy and adventure. The first book introduces us to the heroine Lyra and a world that we find is much like our own, but not quite... parallel worlds, good vs evil (and the wondering of who is whom.. not is always as it appears)... spiritual journeys of the heart and soul.... a fantastic read and while not specifically Pagan either is a great read.
Children of the Earth, Remember by Schimm Schimmel
I have that one and I ADORE it, plus the artwork is amazing.
I also bought her "Mountains, Meadows and Moonbeams—a child's spiritual reader by Mary Summer Rain. It's published by Hampton Roads publishing..I found it at a new age shop. The little stories are great..lots of explanations and the illustrations are made to be coloured by the kids.
I will have to look for the others mentioned
Thanks Saffire!
Peace!

I'm glad you guys are getting some use out of my post. I really love seeking out books for my kids that have Pagan flavor to them... or at least earth centric flavor.... my son is really picking up on things too the older he gets. He's almost offended when he sees litter... he just can't understand how some folks can't SEE what they're doing is wrong.
He's a far cry from the little fry who "fixed" a caterpillar once with a... hammer.

Hi! I also have "Family Wicca" and "Raising Witches" by Ashleen O'Gaea. These are more for my reading, but they give me good ideas and resources.
Also, "Be Blest: A Celebration of Seasons" by Mary Beth Owens, "The Little Stream" by Barry Ellsworth, "The Tale of the Heaven Tree" by Mary Joslin, "The Giving Tree" by Shel Silverstein,"The Sunbeam and the Wave", by Elizabeth Hamilton, "The Quest for the Crystal Castle" by Dan Millman, "The Song of Celestine" by James Redfield (has great universal Pagan ideas, and "The Tale of The Little Soul and the Sun" by Neale Donald Walsch.
I got a great Pagan Activity book for kids through Amazon of all places, it's by Amber K, Horned Owl Publishing.
There's more, but I will have to sift through boxes.
Blessings and Peace,
Leigh

Thanks a whole bunch, Saffire, I passed them on to my sister whom has 4 young ones! I'm actually interested in getting some books for myself.
[send green star]
That sounds great, now I'm interested in that one too!
I have the Circle 'Round book and cd and love them both!
Thank you for letting me know about the other book! I like to get recommendations before I put the money into something!
[send green star]
I have both Celebrating the Great Mother by Cait Johnson (and others) and Circle Round by Starhawk (and others).
I enjoy both books.. while there's some overlapping there are elements in each unique to each book as well. I've found owning both to be helpful. They offer lots of ideas, activities and such for celebrations involving kids. There's so much that's fun for kids (of all ages) it's easy to get them involved and these books definitely help.
I hadn't added them to my original list as they're for the parents to read and filter the info to the kids rather than story book or books geared directly to kids.
There's this book too that I'm highly interested in called Songs for Earthlings... http://www.amazon.com/exec/obidos/tg/detail/-/0966371542/ref=wl_it_dp/102-1172068-9444151?%5Fencoding=UTF8&coliid=I2WAXXLBU6D4XG&v=glance&colid=BRUMMV2AF2ET
It's a songbook not a CD... my kids LOVE songs and music and I'm always searching for kid friendly, earth friendly songs too. There's a kid friendly song on the new CD by Spiral Rhythm that is really fun... Children's Totem Chant or something like that.. it's a blast to sing and helps remind kids about their connection to animals as well as humans, even the icky slimy ones.. LOL
[send green star]
There is a series of books, though the auther escapes me, called "The Witch Next Door". I beleive there are about 5 books in the series, but there could be more. I always liked these stories, they're a little cheesy and stereotypical, but the witch is always the good guy of the story.
[send green star]
I thought it'd be fun to start a thread and share what our favorite Pagan friendly kids' books would be. I'm always on the prowl for good books for kids to help understand either holidays, spirituality, environmentalistm or their place in the world/universe.
My own list include:
Children of the Earth, Remember by Schimm Schimmel
Dear Children of the Earth by Schimm Schimmel
Earthdance by Joanne Ryder
The Great Kapok Tree by Lynne Cherry
When the Root Children Wake up by Audrey Wood
Child of Faerie, Child of Earth by Jane Yolen
Babushka Baba Yaga by Patricia Pollaco
Earth, Water, Fire, Air by Mary Hoffman
Mother Earth by Nancy Luenn
The above are all picture books though appropriate for most age level.
Ellen Jackson has a "set" of picture books on the seasonal holidays including The Summer Solstice, The Autumn Equinox, The Winter Solstice and The Sprnig Equinox (each book is titled as such)... each explores how different cultures celebrate the seasonal changes and the books include little activities, crafts or kid friendly recipes in the back. I'm slowly collecting them all for my kids.
Wendy Pfeiffer has one called The Shortest Day that also explores the winter solstice tide.
I'm still exploring but the above are all ones we've read.
As for older kids, mine just turned 8 and we're working on older kid book ideas. Perhaps others already have some? I know he's getting into dragons and the fae and likes fantasy like Harry Potter and many Bruce Coville books like Jeremy Thatcher, Dragon Hatcher..
Anyone else care to share?
