DETROIT, MI – Based on the pace of a felony animal cruelty case involving Detroit battle rapper Young Calicoe, it appears that a verdict on the matter won’t be reached until late winter or early spring – at the earliest.
Judge Katherine L. Hansen, of Detroit’s 36th District Court will revisit the case 2 p.m. Friday after a twice-postponed preliminary exam for Calicoe began Thursday afternoon with testimony from a Michigan Humane Society animal cruelty investigator.
The legal council representing Calicoe, whose real name is Toranio Hightower, and two other defendants, is expected to cross-examine investigator Mark Ramos in Friday’s portion of the hearing.
Ramos was first questioned in court Thursday by Wayne County assistant prosecutor Raj Prasad.
Ramos shared what he found during a July raid of a Detroit home including photos of what he claims were antibiotics and syringes – items often seen used to treat injured dogs.
“These are typically seen to treat wounds,” said Ramos, who mentioned that all the eight dogs in the home were examined by a veterinarian.
Once the defense’s cross-examination of Ramos is complete Friday, both the prosecution and defense are expected to meet back in court 2 p.m. Feb. 28.
Hansen has yet to rule whether or not an MTV Cribs-style video, featuring Calicoe and the two other defendants, can be used in court as evidence.
Prasad’s questioning of Ramos on the witness stand was limited to what the investigator saw at the Detroit home that appeared to be featured in the video.
Ramos mentioned he also saw kennels and chicken coops inside and outside the home on Outer Drive in Detroit’s Brightmoor neighborhood.
Calicoe’s attorney Warren Harris argued in court Thursday that the video doesn’t prove that an actual crime was committed, and therefore should be thrown out of court.
Words, in what Harris claims was a skit for a rap video, aren’t illegal, he said.
“I was watching ‘Madea’s Family Reunion’ the other night, and she (said) she shot Tupac,” said Harrison, giving his example of fiction to Hansen. “You need to get a warrant against her!”
Hightower is charged with conspiracy to gamble (5 years maximum – if convicted), animal fighting (4 years) and conspiracy to commit animal fighting (4 years).
Two other Detroit natives are also charged with crimes: Savay Chokbengboun, 31, and Cassandra Faye Worthington, 26.
Chokbegboun is charged with Conspiracy to Gamble (5 years), 5 counts of Animal Fighting (4 years), Conspiracy to Commit Animal Fighting (4 Years), Possessing Animal Fighting Equipment (5 years) and Cruelty to Animals (2 years).
Worthington is charged with 5 counts of Animal Fighting (4 years) and Conspiracy to Commit Animal Fighting (4 Years), Possessing Animal Fighting Equipment (5 years) and Cruelty to Animals (2 years).
The charges were filed once five cruelty investigators and the Detroit Police Department matched the house with the one shot in the video and found eight dogs, three hens, three rosters, several pigeons and a rabbit.
CORPUS CHRISTI - A neighbor called police this afternoon for a dog tied to a fence in the heat of the day. By the time officers arrived it was too late.
The owner of the dog, Jesse Deleon, had to carry his deceased one year old mutt into the Animal Control van. Deleon says his dog was an indoor pet and he had only started leaving him outside because he wasn't potty trained.Deleon says, "It's depressing, but it happens."
There was no shade near the fence the dog was chained to. A water bowl was nearby, but the dog may have dumped it over.
Police say Deleon is facing a misdemeanor charge of animal cruelty.
Deleon says he's learned from his mistake and says he is going to take better care of his other dog, "I am going to make sure he is protected. Keep the dog house, cold water."
Animal Control Officer James Ray gave some tips for keeping pets safe during these hot summer months, "As a human, you wouldn't like to sit outside all day long during the heat, chained up, tied up. Bring them inside."
