Know your birds!

Well, I suppose that perhaps the most important thing any of us can initially do to help in the conservation of birds - is to know them. Learn to identify the species in your area, by sight and sound, and go from there. Grab a pair of binoculars and a good field guide, and just get out there. Once of know whats in your area, and if you can find any rarities in your area; the rest will fall into place. Often the presence of a rare species in an area(especially in they are breeding); can be enough to tip the scales towards protecting that land from development. I know of several organizations, at least in Canada, that allow you to submit data to a database in order to monitor population levels over time. Check out the Bird Studies Canada site, www.bsc-eoc.org, and have a look at the project NestWatch, and FeederWatch sections. You can sign up and submit data online. There is a similar section on the Royal Ontario Museum site, where you can submit data for the breeding bird atlas. You have to know your birds before you can submit though! Anyway, at least initially, and at the local level - knowing your birds can be the most important thing you can do to protect them. -Good Birding:)
Helping the Birds

Yes, knowing your birds is really important, but I think one of the best places for bird conservation is The Audubon Society. Their website is: http://www.audubon.org/ Or visit The Nature Conservancy at: http://nature.org They are with preserving habitats for birds and lots of other animals. Check out these sites, they're really very good and will give you some idea about what to do. If you make a donation to either or both of these places, that is a really good idea. The Audubon Society as well as The Nature Conservancy are helpful to birds and other animals in need.
