Flu is on the upswing in Illinois along with most of the rest of the nation.
Illinois Department of Public Health spokeswoman Melaney Arnold says almost 150 people have been admitted to intensive care units with the flu this season and six have died.
Eight Chicago-area hospitals were turning away ambulances Monday night as they dealt with a flood of patients with flu-like symptoms.
U.S. health officials say the strain of influenza virus going around this year has been linked to more hospital admissions and deaths.
"This season is a reminder of how serious flu can be," said Dr. Julie Morita of the Chicago Department of Public Health. The most recent reports from Chicago labs that test for influenza showed 17 percent of specimens tested positive. Last year by this time, fewer than 1 percent of the tests were positive.
Statewide, the flu-related deaths have been in Cook, Will and Coles counties. People who've died have been in their 50s, 60s and elderly, according to the state health department.
It isn't too late to get a flu shot, and there's no shortage of flu vaccine. This year's vaccine is a good match for the viruses circulating this year, one indication of how well the vaccine should work.
The state health department's website has a map with lists of local health departments that provide flu shots. People should first contact their doctors or other health care providers. Many drug stores also provide flu vaccine.
Morita said Chicago residents can call 311 to find out where to get a free flu shot.
Illinois is among 29 states reporting high flu activity, and 41 states were reporting widespread geographic flu activity for the week ending Dec. 29, according to the U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention.
The CDC recommends antiviral medications for certain patients who are sick, including those hospitalized and seriously ill. Antiviral treatment also is recommended for people who may have the flu and are at high risk for flu-related complications. That includes young children, people 65 and older, people with certain underlying medical conditions and pregnant women.
I haven't had flu shots for several years. My daughter is a nurse and she said she and the kids will not be getting one. She doesn't like them either. It worries me a little, because of my grandson though, who will be 6 in a few days, but he sometimes has a little bit of a breathing problem you can tell when he's asleep, and he seems to get colds too easily sometimes, like his immune system may not be full up to par yet. That, and all the different kids surrounding them in school everyday nowdays, it causes concern for me. I make sure whenever he's here he gets his vitamins and Vit. C, even when they just pop in for a few, and he eats healthy and is otherwise healthy, but I worry a little about his respiratory system, especially with this stuff going around.
I have never taken the vaccine and never will, I live by faith, supplements and standing on the word of God, my husband was convinced by the doctor on 2011 and sure enough one month later in 2012 he was in the hospital with pneumonia, his lungs have never been the same since then.
Sherry you need to get so angry at the devil and lay hands on your grandson and command those lungs to work to the perfection that God created them in Jesus name and tell the devil to take his filthy hands from this body in Jesus name....cover him with the blood of Jesus. I did this with my son he was twice in the hospital with the croup and breathing allergies, he was allergic to everything you can think. Getting shots once a month for them. I got angry finally one day he was laying in bed, he was about 8 years old and could not catch his breath, I kicked butt in the spirit and massage the ball on his foot and he took a big breath...till this day he'll be 40 years old this May and has never had a problem again, glory to God!
I just posted the article on colloidal silver to build up and guard against any disease
I'm not taking them Rhonda! LOL My husband doesn't either.
Thank you Rhonda and Ivonne for the natural remedy's. I will write them down. I had heard of colloidal silver before, but forgot about it! I do believe faith and hands can heal. I was massaging my husbands back, neck and head one time when he was really hurting. He was laying on his stomach, head down, stretched, eyes closed. Sounds odd, but I was concentrating on feeling the problem areas, & I'd bring up my hands and shake them, like feeling like shaking off bad stuff, if that makes any sense. At the end, I brought up my hands off his head, feeling like bad stuff was being pulled up and out. He couldn't see what I was doing. He goes, "That was weird. It just felt like everything went whoosh up out of my head, like I could feel everything just left." And he was fine.
I do think love has a lot to do with healing sometimes. I had a horse as a teenager who got into a barrell of cracked corn when the lid was left up on the wood box container. I come home from school to find her laying in a big sweated out area of pasture. The vet had us give her bottles of mineral oil, but had told my dad he did not believe she would make it anyway, and he'd be back in the AM. I stayed out there with her all night, her head in my lap. Next morning she was up. The vet came and I saw him talking to my dad. My dad told me after he left that the vet said he could not believe it, he expected her to be dead, and that the only thing that he believed that could have saved her was love.
