Only 60 Javan Rhino left on Earth!!!!!!

On the brink of extinction: Javan Rhino has new enemy in invasive Palm As few as 58 Javan Rhinos exist in the world today, & the Species is quite possibly the rarest large mammal on earth. All are found in one small population in Ujung Kulon — a sprawling 1,200-sq.-kilometer (463-sq.-mile) Nat.l park on the westernmost tip of West Java & the island of Panaitan. Javan Rhinoceroses have survived poachers, rapid deforestation & life in the shadow of one of the archipelago's most active volcanoes. But an invasive plant is now posing a new threat to the world's rarest Species of Rhino. Cal M. http://www.care2.com/news/member/193692282/3785377

Video:   Close up look at Javan Rhinos
An amazing sight as cameras catch a rare look at Javan Rhinos. The movements of at least 35 of the endangered animals, five of them calves, were captured in the Uljung Kulon National Park in Indonesia. The Javan Rhino was once the most common Rhinoceros in Indonesia but was nearly wiped out when a volcano erupted in 1883. The greatest threat they face today is from Poachers and Habitat Destruction. Experts estimate only 40 to 60 Javan Rhinos remain in the park. Lindsey http://www.care2.com/news/member/145521001/3058931

Fighting A Last-Ditch Battle To Save Rare Javan Rhino Apr.2012 Indonesia, conservationists struggling to save the last 40 Javan Rhinos on Earth: once ranging widely across Asia, now 1 of the planet’s rarest animals. A patch of Rainforest, West Java, Indonesia: their last&only refuge. Javan Rhino: precarious. Sole Habitat: an area of Forest that only exists as a consequence of the massive 1883 eruption of Krakatoa; the ash fallout & tsunami killed everyone, now Ujung Kulong Nat,l Park. Fear of eruptions left the area uninhabited, allowing Forest to regrow, providing Javan Rhino a refuge on the most densely populated island in Indonesia. IUCN rates 3 of the 5 remaining Species of Rhino Critically Endangered, only one step away from extinction. Sumatran Rhino: Javan’s closest relative, Sumatra&Borneo, fewer than 275 left: thinly spread, can’t find one another to mate. Survival Likelihood of either Species:50%. Africa: 3 Rhino Species: ar. 20,000; Worldwide: Habitat shrinks & Poachers slaughter hundreds/year for their horns. Cal http://www.care2.com/news/member/193692282/3283559

Africa's Western Black Rhino is now officially extinct according the latest review of animals & plants by the world's largest conservation network. The subspecies of the black Rhino -- which is classified as "critically endangered" by the Int-l Union for Conservation of Nature's (IUCN) Red List of Threatened Species -- was last seen in Western Africa in 2006.

The IUCN warns that other Rhinos could follow:

-Africa's Northern White Rhino is "teetering on the brink of extinction" while

-Asia's Javan Rhino is "making its last stand" due to continued poaching & lack of conservation.

Rhino poaching crisis fueled by insatiable demand Poaching has already had grave consequences for Rhinos. In the last decade, the Western Black Rhino went extinct & the Indochinese Javan Rhino was eradicated from Vietnam, with fewer than 50 individuals remaining in Java. Vietnam provides the main market for horn, marketed as an anything drug, ranging from a hangover cure to cancer treatment. "The surge in Rhino horn demand from Viet Nam has nothing to do with meeting traditional medicine needs, it's to supply a recreational drug to party goers or to con dying cancer patients out of their cash for a miracle Rhino horn cure that will never happen". 26) New!! Pet.: Save the Sumatran Rhino http://www.thepetitionsite.com/946/999/746/save-the-sumatran-rhino/  Author: Nyack Clancy; Target: China Minister of Finance. The Sumatran Rhinocerous is critically endangered. Once numerous throughout Southeast Asia, fewer than 275 remain due to Illegal Poaching for its horn. Uses of the Rhinoceros's body parts among the local people of Sumatra are documented, such as the use of Rhino horns in amulets & a folk-belief that the horns offer some protection against poison. Hunting the Rhino has primarily been driven by a demand for Rhino horns with supposedly medicinal properties, claiming to to cure diarrhea, leprosy, tuberculosis, skin diseases & as an aphrodisiac, although traditional Chinese medicine never used it for this purpose. We ask the Chinese Gov.t to discourage the use of Rhinoceros horns, providing alternatives to this medicine & make Rhinoceros poaching a serious crime & to take a more active role in Rhinoceros conservation.

the Surprising New Trend That’s Saving Rhinos
1 year ago

With over 200 rhinos already dead this year at the hands of poachers in South Africa and no signs of the slaughter slowing, some innovative rhinoceros lovers are stepping up their game.

Wildlife workers at Sabi Sand, a private game reserve at the southernmost tip of Kruger National Park, have injected a special cocktail into 100 rhino horns, turning them pink in an effort to deter illegal horn hunters.

In addition to discoloring the horn, the pink dye can also be detected by airport scanners, even when the horn is ground into a powder to make the high-priced traditional "medicines" that help fuel the killing of rhinos. The hope is to make transport of the illegal product that much riskier.

News: The riot over Rhinos: how a luxury & illegal commodity is driving the slaughter of one of the world’s iconic Megafauna http://news.mongabay.com/2012/1015-santana-rhino-south-africa.html?utm_source=dlvr.it&utm_medium=twitter

23,680 = the estimated number of wild Rhinoceroses in S. Africa. 35,000,000 = the number of US$ generated by Rhino hunting in South Africa. 97% = the percentage increase in illegally-hunted rhinos in 2011 from the national average in 1990. 30,000 = the number of pounds of rhino horns confiscated from poachers since 2010. 65 = the number of horns that have been stolen in S. Africa from public display. 430...the number of rhinos killed this year, & counting...

Rhino killing is being made easier by more than just Vietnamese traders posing as hunters; loopholes in hunting regulations, corrupt wildlife industry workers, and more sophisticated hunting techniques have all contributed to the crisis. Startlingly, poachers & pseudo-hunters are not the only ones capitalizing on the insatiable appetites of Vietnamese commodity-seekers. Handsome payouts for rhino horns have lured wildlife industry workers & game managers into corruption. An increase in the use of sophisticated weapons & live animals being dehorned using immobilization techniques indicates cooperation on the part of veterinarians, game ranch owners, & professional hunters.

News: Rhinos under 24-hour armed guard http://www.telegraph.co.uk/earth/wildlife/9525512/Rhinos-under-24-hour-armed-guard.html

Last year the Javan Rhinoceros, the rarest large mammal in the world, was declared extinct in Vietnam. The last one was killed in October in Cat Tien Nat.l Park, found with a bullet in its leg & its horn sawn off.

As a Species the Rhino is at least 50 million years old, but if something is not done to curb the appetite for its horn, it may not last the century. The poaching trade in both Rhino horn & ivory has moved to a new level & now operates in a way that is comparable to drug cartels or arms dealing. Penalties are often paltry in Africa, from where much of the horn originates, & poorly enforced in Asia, where it ends up. Some crime syndicates are expanding their existing operations into the ivory & horn trade – the risks are fewer & the profits can be greater. Technology has helped poachers enormously. From 2008 until mid 2011, 776 Rhinos killed in South Africa, where poachers are using GPS, helicopters & semi-automatic weapons.

'If we kill off the wild, then we are killing a part of our souls' Jane Goodall, and that is the way I feel also, when reading of the useless killing of Rhino's, and man's inhumanity to so many other species.
Thank You so much Michaela for all your hard work in getting people to be more aware and take action. There are maybe enough stars in the milky way that you deserve for your oodness.

8) New!! Say no to legalising trade in Rhino horn http://www.avaaz.org/en/petition/SAY_NO_TO_LEGALIZING_TRADE_IN_RHINO_HORN/

The pro-trade lobby has tried to justify Rhino horn trade in economic terms. These justifications are based on flawed & dangerous assumptions and often proposed by those with a vested financial interest in trade.

As usual, I signed with all my family Emails!!!

Gladly signed. The lives of rhinos are taken to satisfy people driven by an archaic mentality. It's unbelievable and should never be forgiven.

all 3 signed! When using the word URGENT, i take it literally and assume little time is left so this kind of petition gets pushed to the front of the line -- if not urgent i will not rush! Thank you.

3 Petitions for the Rhinos

All petitions signed and tried to watch the video. It brought me to tears to think that human beings are capable of such horrendous acts of violence.
I am happy to do a small part to save the Rhinocerous. I pray that more soldiers can be added to help in putting a stop to taking Rhino Horns. Many Thanks to you Michela, for all your work in trying to save the animals. You are special!

| TAKE ACTION

Urgent!! New!! Save the Rhinos!

To the Governments of France, Denmark & the UK:

EU Environment Ministers meet in 3 days and could decide on bold new actions to save these amazing creatures but they need to hear from us first!

The Rhino is being hunted into extinction and could disappear forever unless we act now. Shocking new statistics show more than 440 Rhinos were brutally killed last year in South Africa alone - a massive increase on 5 years ago when just 13 had their horns hacked off.

“As citizens of the world concerned over the plight of the world's Rhinoceros population, we call on you to make a recommendation to the Members of the CITES Standing Committee to suspend trade in all Rhino products - trophies, antiques, live animals, etc. - including to China & Vietnam until there is a full independent review of the impact of such trade, enforcement measures have been reviewed, comprehensive national public awareness campaigns have been implemented in consumer countries, and poaching levels have returned to their 2007 levels.”
