Police: Man, woman dead after murder-suicide shooting at hotel-casino on Las Vegas Strip
KEN RITTER , THE ASSOCIATED PRESS DECEMBER 15, 2012
LAS VEGAS, Nev. - A man shot and fatally wounded a woman, then killed himself Friday night at the Excalibur hotel-casino on the Las Vegas Strip, sending frightened patrons fleeing.
Las Vegas Police Lt. Ray Steiber said the shootings happened at about 8:30 p.m. near the high-rise hotel's front entrance.
Steiber said the man shot the woman, who was a vendor at the hotel's concierge desk, and then turned the gun on himself. The man was found dead at the scene.
The woman was transported to a local hospital, where she was pronounced dead.
Neither the gunman nor the victim was identified. However, Steiber said the woman worked as a vendor at the concierge desk, where tourists can get show tickets and restaurant reservations. He said the relationship between the shooter and the victim wasn't immediately clear.
The shooting happened as the hotel's registration desk was busy on a Friday night with the National Finals Rodeo and other events in town. Steiber said patrons scattered at the first sound of gunfire, and no one else was wounded.
MGM Resorts International owns the Excalibur and several other hotels on the Las Vegas Strip. Company spokesman Gordon Absher said the hotel and casino remained open to guests and patrons. However, the area where the shooting took place remained cordoned off by police while the investigation continued.

Birmingham Police Sgt. Johnny Williams says the officer and employees suffered injuries that are not considered life-threatening.
Williams says police were called because a man with a gun was walking through St. Vincent's Hospital on Saturday morning. When he was confronted by officers, he started shooting and wounded one of the officers. That's when the second officer shot and killed the man.
Detectives are still working to determine why the armed man was in the hospital.

A man fatally shot a woman decorating for a children's Christmas party at a tiny church hall and killed two men elsewhere in a rural central Pennsylvania township Friday before he was fatally shot in a gunfight with state troopers.
The shootings began in Frankstown Township at about 9 a.m. and investigators were processing five crime scenes within about a 1.5-mile radius, authorities said at a news briefing Friday afternoon. The troopers were responding to a 911 call of a shooting in the township when they heard calls reporting at least one other shooting elsewhere, state police spokeswoman Maria Finn said.
“It's going to take us some time to put this all together... and know exactly what occurred,” Lt. Col. George Biven's, deputy state police commissioner, said at a news briefing.
Family members of the victims said they were told the woman at the church was the first victim shot, the Pittsburgh Tribune-Review reported. The gunman then shot two men in the driveway of a home after a confrontation at a stop sign, authorities said.
“This person went to their driveway with a pistol, pointed at them and started shooting,” Marie Brenneman told the newspaper, identifying herself as a cousin of one of the male victims. She said both male victims were the shooter's neighbors in the tiny village of Geeseytown, about 70 miles west of Harrisburg.
So as you can see, guns are clearly the answer.
Too bad there weren't any armed law abiding citizens to stop those murderers before they could move on to the next victims, eh, Christian?
You see, Christian, when only the bad guys are allowed to have guns (they don't obey "gun laws" - how have you missed that?) then all the good guys are left defenseless. Explain to us how that is a good idea.
Explain to us how it was a good idea to tell the small but very lethal world of crazy people that schools PACKED full of students and faculty are "unarmed" defenseless sitting ducks. Waiting....
REMOVING guns from law abiding citizens is clearly the answer. Damn straight. You are not going to UNinvent the weapons, and you are not going to keep them FROM crazy criminals. Period. Get a clue.
We are a violent country; that is our history & our present. It is internalized in all of us. We kill for money, for power, for influence & for attention. I say "we" because I am a taxpayer & my money supports wars abroad as well as mass incarceration at home. Time to stop acting surprised when Americans kill children on our own lands; we do it abroad in the name of "anti terrorism" "foreign aid" & "democracy" everyday.
On every continent. Indigenous children are most often the ones under attack, simply because their existence challenges America's reign of superiority. Until our culture learns to value human life over currency & power, this will be our reality. True, a country built on dehumanization is likely to perpetuate cycles of violence. There is hope though, because culture is not set in stone! We are subject to it, but we also shape it. Banning weapons is not culture shaping, it is just law. Shaping culture starts with how we educate our youth on how to place value on community & our place in Mother Nature. & we must speak truthfully about our history.
Do not lose hope. Let's get educated on this issue of violence. Did you know that Obama has enacted a law that allows the military to determine any neighborhood in "terrorist regions" cleared for killing off all teenage-young adult males? Even at home, we criminalize our youth before they even know how to read, destining them for a future in prison or 6 feet under.
Do you value all life the same? Do you think things have no value except as commodity? Do you think children whose parents don't like America's policies of violence deserve to die? Let's change what we teach our future generations so that they don't have to wake up everyday in the middle of multiple wars. All it takes is a willingness to change how we treat each other & how we perceive ourselves. Life is too beautiful to keep robbing children of their futures.
Get a clue?
How is it that a gunman was able to kill 13 people and wound 29 others at Fort Hood, the world's largest US military base, where presumably, everyone was armed?
What's your explanation for that?
Let's hear the explanation.

Too many stupid and irresponsible people are gun owners!!!!!
Eliminate the police and the military!!
"Too many stupid and irresponsible people are gun owners!!!!!" So we should take them from the people who are not stupid and irresponsible?
- Note that the vast majority of gun homicides occur in areas with strict gun control......Those areas are also under democrat/progressive government.
- Some 88% of the guns used in gun related crimes came from illegal sources.
- The highest percentage of homicides in Europe are in Russia. There are very few guns in that country. It does not stop the murders.
"So as you can see, guns are clearly the answer."
- All those incidents ended with a gun, right? There is no way that every guns is going to accounted for. The vast majority used in violent incidents are obtained illegally. That will not change.
- There are also many crimes that are prevented or ended by those that have privately owned guns.
I wont bother responding to eliminating the military and police as that is insanity.
Sheila, the police and military are a greater threat with weapons than most citizens..
I am greatful for the police and military which protect my city and country!
I don't want to live in chaos, fear and anarchy.
They are part of a social structure which does work most of the time.
There are far too many weird, crazies out there today who are more than willing to exercise anti-social behavior and they pose a serious threat and danger to society.
The police and military must be LIMITED in their function. The US constitution and was designed to REGULATE what government was allowed to do in order to protect the rights of the people. The police and military were long recognized as a potential threat to the people as they are the tools of force that government could use to take the rights of the people away from them. Those that advocate for the expansion of government and empowering the State endanger the rights of the people. Every despotic government in history has used the police and military. How is it that people don't understand this?
