peak jobs?

I had been contemplating an idea of public/private enterprise in which the stuff, the manufactured items we all generally use, are pretty much supplied through automated systems. Items could easily be manufactured to fit their demand. Money, a medium of IOUs for accounting of exchange, could be created as needed by automated accounting systems. The social cost is the use cost of limited resources; but resources could be allocated and recycled thus that most of what is used is not so limited. Competitive entertainments, contests, and a general value of creative cleverness could keep us from going stale or stagnant. Is this story delineated in current popular fiction?
