There is no such Thing as a "necessary" evil. Evil is just evil. And it is definitely and tragically evil to make helpless animals suffer for ones own shortcomings. And that is exactly what is Happening when People mistreat and torture helpless animals. Anyone who can even allow this to happen should be treated to some of the medicine doled out to the animals. Maybe that would help them get a life. Because without a heart there is no real life.

"The days of Christmas make us more affectionate. But not all. There are some people in our society which is worse than beasts and do not hesitate to abuse helpless creatures just to satisfy their sick fantasies.
A 'man' beat one helpless little dog, tied her paws, put in a bag and threw it in the trash to die. The tragic incident occurred in Orestiada and came to light from the fellow human being who realized that something was alive in the trash and saved the dog."

MINISTRY OF TOURISM MEETING
We had a useful meeting at the Ministry and discussed all of the animal abuse complaints we receive - especially during the summer period when foreign tourists are visiting Greece. There was an agreement towards actions that would alert hotel and tavern owners to best practice management of strays in their vicinity. We also urge anyone with any animal welfare complaint to send these directly to the Ministry of Tourism at email@example.com and cc us too firstname.lastname@example.org
Wishing you a lovely November!

Many people who come to your country do not want to return. Tourists are really shocked by the animal cruelty in Greece. On Crete there are chained dogs, alive skeletons, without water and food, in sunlight on higher temperature. Also dogs lock in a wooden crate, in direct sunlight. These images are repeating over and over again. Barbaric cruelty to animals in the streets and in shelters, live animals in dumpsters, dogs in cages which cannot move at all, until death end their suffering...
All Signed. Thanks Desanka x
We say NO to the violent & illegal removal of 30 dogs from the private dog shelter of Mrs Niki at Velina, Corinth
Niki Doukas farm is 13 acres; the dogs are placed within groups where they can get along with each other, in bounded areas, with their kennels. NONE of them shows aggressive behavior. They are all vaccinated, subjected to deworming (inside-out), they have health booklets and they all love Mrs Niki and look her with a regard that cannot be described in words. All dogs are sterilized except some males, which had been scheduled for sterilization.
In the end of 2012, two neighbors, both have country houses at the opposite side of the farm, complained.
Court ordered removal of 30 dogs, without any clarification on WHERE THE ANIMALS WILL BE TAKEN, but at the same time, there is a possibility left open, that the "neighbors" can remove the animals by their own means, while Mrs Niki will be asked to pay the bill.
Some people are always against "a crazy woman on the mountain gathering dogs". But what dogs? The dogs that some "responsible" citizens abandoned and dumped on the mountain to get rid, and ignored by the Municipality! Furthermore, the vast majority of dogs are shepherds and hounds.
We need help (we do not ask for money) for the disclosure of our facts is desperately indispensable, any nice word gives us strength to continue, any idea, any kind of concern will help us. And we commit ourselves not to draw away and to exhaust every legal right of the animals to exist in dignity and every right of Mrs Niki to take care of them and love them; every right to STAND UP AGAINST ANY MENTALITY THAT MATCHES BYGONE TIMES AND BYGONE ETHICS.
Thank you for your time

Subject: GREECE, CHANIA: MASS POISONING OF SHELTER DOGS
Dear Mr Skoulakis,
This news is truly appalling and warrants an immediate investigation at the highest level.
The shelter near Vamos, which offers sterilisation vaccination, care and welfare for many of Chania’s dumped, abandoned and unwanted dogs, runs entirely on the financial donations from overseas charity and is situated on privately owned land.
It is disgraceful that this shelter operated by volunteers and costing Cretan people or your authority NOTHING has suffered from harassment for years from land-owners in the surrounding area. The shelter does not cause any problems for residents, the fencing is secure, and the site is not in a populated area.
You must be aware of the many past threats and problems caused to these volunteers and the animals in their care. Why has authority action NOT been taken to protect, promote and assist the extremely valuable work which they do?
This horrendous event and the publicity it has rightly received have once again dramatically affected Chania’s animal care lack of provision and reputation.
We ask for an immediate thorough investigation together with a press release that this abject mindless and illegal cruelty will NOT be tolerated and actions will be taken to protect the shelter, its volunteers and its animals.
We also think that a meeting should be arranged with adjacent land-owners to inform them of the importance of the shelters work. Farmers must be made aware of the fact that the whole areas tourist input is seriously undermined by continual harassment of the shelter and abuse of stray animals. Lack of municipality and police action to halt this harassment must have played a huge role to encourage a mindless coward to commit this horrendous attack against defenseless dogs in this shelters care.
Your urgent action is extremely important, many people are awaiting a persona statement from you emphasizing that you will do all in your power to not only rigorously pursue the perpetrator but also offer a solution and action to give meaningful protection to this shelter.
I look forward to your response.
Thanks Monika, Jan and Desanka, signed petitions.

GoPetition Barell-dogs: The disgrace of Crete
I was a regular visitor to Greece for years, and I know many Greeks who are disgusted with the animal cruelty. The Greek government and Mayors are responsible and they must take a serious stance towards the poisoning and barbaric treatment of abandoned animals. Thank you Jan, signed.
All up to date here! Forwarded Personalised Email with the Sample Letter as a guide to the authorities email addresses stated!!! So Disgusted by this Cruel and unnecessary killing and waste of precious dog's lives!! These killers need to be found and punished for their brutal actiions as soon as possible!!! The letter I sent adapted from the Sample letter is as follows:
This post was modified from its original form on 16 Jul, 2:45
On the 10th of July 2013 another act of brutality and animal cruelty took place on the island of Crete, Greece.
23 dogs that were being cared for in a shelter run by the local welfare society volunteers in the town of Siteia were killed by poisoning.
Local police are understaffed and struggling to cope within the limited resources available, but are nevertheless attempting to get to the bottom of the crime by organising postmortem examinations and sending samples to Athens for analysis. But they admit this matter is unlikely to be given high priority. THIS MUST CHANGE!
We call upon the local authorities - municipal as well as police - to give the issue of animal cruelty greater attention and resources.
There must be more arrests and successful prosecutions. Only then will the message be communicated effectively to the local population:
CRETANS ARE A NOBLE PEOPLE WITH A PROUD HISTORY AND CULTURE.
WE DO NOT RECOGNISE ANIMAL CRUELTY AS PART OF OUR IDENTITY.

Greece was once a country I loved, I spent 10 years on Santorini.
Is not simple to understand... In Greece there are many people who care about animals.
"We had a new arrival today at the SAWA Refuge, her name is Daisy a beautiful 25 year old mule that worked all her life in the bay of Fira, carrying tourists from the cruise ships up the 588 steps leading to the capital of Santorini and down back again... Today is her official retirement day as her owner surrendered her to our Refuge for old and injured equines... Daisy was greeted by the usual welcome commitee of Lupo and Libra and then entered her new "home" a shelter for life that she will share with 20 more equines. We are glad to see that more and more owners are understanding that they should give up their animals that can no longer work offering them the dignity they deserve for all these years of endless service...

Ionas, a puppy only months old, was severely abused on the island of Samothraki, Greece on 18th February 2013. After he was bitten with a cleaver on the head, he was tied up with a rope and a sack full of stones was attached on him. He was then thrown to sea to drown. He struggled to remain on the surface, and luckily for him he was spotted by a fisherman and rescued. After spending some days on the island he was transferred by another fisherman to our town and was received by the local animal welfare union, Kivotos Alexandroupolis.Ionas was immediately taken to the vet where he received and is still receiving veterinary care. Unfortunately he lost one eye and the other is not certain to be saved. The Animal welfare Union Kivotos Alexandroupolis offers an award of 1000 Euros to any who could give specific information on the perpetrator's identity and whereabouts. Please, I implore you, sign the petition and ask the Mayor of Samothraki to do anything in his power for the dog's abuser to be found and be brought to justice.
