In recent months, the killing of Sumatran elephants in East Aceh, Aceh Jaya and Riau, has been on the increase. Suspected, are palm oil companies in these regions and also local farmers protecting their crops. They are suspected of putting poison on bars of soap, which elephants like to eat, and attaching them to trees. In the last 3 months more 10 elephants have been reported found poisoned in Aceh, many of them decapitated, or their tusks taken, and a number in Riau, Eastern Sumatra.

We are deeply disturbed about Montana Fish, Wildlife and Parks wolf hunting and trapping plan for the upcoming 2012-13 season. We will continue to demand that decision-makers use science to guide their policies and to urge restraint when enacting these policies as they relate to wolves throughout the Northern Rockies region.

 

For the past 5 years, the wolf population in the Greater Yellowstone ecosystem has stabilized at around 130. Trapping to kill 60% of wolves in the upcoming 2012-13 hunting and trapping season could threaten the greater Yellowstone population and possibly replicate the 2009 elimination of the Cottonwood Pack in 2010. We want a hunt and trap-free buffer zone enacted now to surround Yellowstone National Park to protect this modest population of wolves who are at serious risk.

Stop Solomon Islands Trading in Wild Birds!

 

The critically endangered yellow-crested cockatoo is one of 35 endangered bird species that have been leaving the Solomon Islands in a cage -- destined for the shelves of a pet store. And, so far, the country has mostly gotten away with this, claiming the birds were bred in captivity.

The problem is, no major breeding farms exist anywhere on the island. »

According to numerous news sources, the Solomon Islands have been "laundering" wild birds caught illegally and passing them off as captive bred. The list of birds so cruelly treated includes the blue bird of paradise and the chattering lory along with many, many others which are on the international red list. 

These beautiful, endangered birds deserve to live their lives in the wild, not trapped in a cage in someone's living room.
