A black bear cowers in the corner of a pen in rural South Carolina. She is tethered to a stake, surrounded by hundreds of onlookers.
She is foaming at the mouth and popping her jaws, behavior that means she is terrified. Her captors have cut or removed her claws and many of her teeth, leaving her defenseless.
Three hounds run at the bear from one end of the arena, barking furiously. Some of them bite her face and legs. Others jump on her. She backs up on her hind legs, trying vainly to shield her face. The assault continues for four hours, as nearly 300 dogs attack her in quick succession.
This spectacle is a bear baiting competition, called a "bear bay" by participants, and is practiced only in South Carolina.
By modern morality, the sport of bear-baiting is a repugnant form of blood sport.
I ask you to ban it and prosecute those who continue to participate with felony animal cruelty.

A huge crowd of villagers in Kashmir's Shopian district is alleged to
have set a bear on fire. The animal possibly strayed into the village from
the forests.
Footage of the incident that happened a few days ago shows the bear trying
to climb a tree in desperation as a crowd gathered around it.

Wildlife advocates scrambled to find a sanctuary for the animal, but time ran out: in August, the bear was shot and killed by management.

I am appalled to hear that the cruel act of bear baiting is still legal and happening in New Hampshire. Bear baiting involves the hunter setting out jelly doughnuts, cooking grease, honey, stale pizza or a 55-gallon drum of rotting fish in bear habitat to train, lure and attract the bears to come feed at these "stations." Once the season to shoot opens, all the hunter does is sit in a tree above the barrel and wait for the bear to come feed, then he shoots and kills. Hounds are also used to chase and tree the bear until the hunters arrive and shoot the bear until the bear falls to his/her death on the ground. The bear does not stand a chance with either of these methods. I do not understand how this can considered fair, hunting or acceptable in the state of New Hampshire, as well as, 9 other states - (10 if you include Arkansas as this is legal on privately owned properties).
I am writing to ask that you use your influence as Governor, State Senate and State Representatives of New Hampshire to see that this heinous act of trickery or entrapment is put to rest and made illegal. These bears need concerned advocates to speak in their favor and stand up for what is right. Turning a blind eye to the truth of this barbaric act does not cease the reality of its existence.

Dear Sirs,
Bears have their teeth and claws removed, are tethered to a post and are subjected to repeated assaults by dogs until it dies. Without teeth or claws, the bear cannot defend itself and is tormented simply for entertainment. It is illegal in every civilized country except Pakistan and the United States of America.
From the HSUS report:
"There are currently 26 captive black bears in South Carolina, many likely used for bear baiting. The South Carolina Department of Natural Resources issued permits for their possession, but has turned a blind eye to the cruelty they endure. The South Carolina DNR does not inspect bear baiting competitions.... The DNR issued captive bear permits to individuals who had been convicted of violating wildlife laws, including poaching a bear out of season."
This is not a sport, it is animal cruelty.
I ask that you to ban it from all 50 states and prosecute those who continue to participate with felony animal cruelty.

This little cub is starving. We need California Fish and Game to release this cub to the Lake Tahoe facility so it can regain it's health, be rehabilitated and then to be released into the wild far away from humans. We have a carrier, a way of getting the cub to Lake Tahoe and the facility in Lake Tahoe has a place for it. Fish and Game have stated "if the cub lives, fine - if the cub dies, fine" this is just not acceptable when there is a place that will help the cub now named Little One. Please help to get California Fish and Game to release the cub for rehabilitation.
