Yes Monika , it is a victory that the misery before killing is less than now. It's a victory for them that their last days of their live is not a hell , like it now is.
But it is not a victory that the hell is there whan they are killed at last.
O what a frustrating world.

European Parliament Votes to Improve Welfare of Live Animals During Transport | WWLAAR
Sylvie- 30 minutes ago - legalaction4animalrights.net
Funny how the religious zealots don't care a damn about the suffering of their fellow species. I am sick of hearing about religious freedom from those who wish to impose their will on others. How about banning eating flesh as it is against my religion and who says mine is less imortant than theirs? I like your post Lenicka.
Lenicka I know from Germany that there is the same discussion going on about a law to interdict Halal Slaughter. Merkel herself said that this law won't come because it hurts "religious freedom" of jewish and muslim citizens in Germany. She wants to win elections next year and don't want to upset Jewish and Muslims in Germany, this is HER real reason!
Well, "religious freedom" is more important then the suffering of animals?? A religious point of view more important then life itself?? And it shows again: animals count nothing....
(Plus: only the worldwide protest against bestiality made it possible that a law is coming now in Germany to punish this disgusting absuse.) I wish I could shoot all these heartless politicians to the moon without a return ticket !!!

"A similar measure was supported and approved in the Netherlands last year, but failed to pass after public outcry that a ban would violate religious freedom."
Grrrrr , it was not a public outcry that let the Senate vote against this law. It was in the first place 1 party of a extreme conservative Christian religion that vote against it. But before that , an American head of the worldwide orthodox Jewish community -self owner of 1 religious slaughterhouse and 1 not religious slaughterhouse ( don't ask me how this can be ) had make the discussion from animal abuse , to an religious affair. We , the fighters against animal abuse , were Nazi's and it was absolutely not true that we fight for animal rights , our only goal was to destroy the Jewish people by taking away their religion freedom. He insulted with this also the not orthodox Jewish people very very much.
We have a very small population orthodox Jews in the Netherlands but always in this kind of questions they came with WW2 in every sentence. And it works !!
The ordinary people hates religious animal slaughter , thats why the parliament voted for prohibition. The Senate overruled it.
On that time there was not a discussion in the political parties about religious animal slaughter , that was complete disappeared , but only about freedom of religion. And that was the reason that that conservative Christian party vote against the law.
religious animal slaughter is something i will never comprehend, and never want to. signed.
This is exactly what makes my blood boil about the European Parliament - they pick and choose which laws can take precedence. Funny how they can overrule Poland's humane law about religious slaughter but not anything connected with animal welare. Religious freedom to abuse animals - great. Typical to put humans above the needs of animals. Any religion that creates pain and suffering for someone other than yourself is not worth having.
Polish Court Bans Religious Animal Slaughter, But Victory Could Be Short-Lived
The decision comes weeks before an EU law allowing the practice on the grounds of religious freedom will go into effect on January 1. According to Poland’s Agriculture Minister Stanislaw Kalemba, the EU law will take precedence and remove any doubts about the legality of ritual slaughter in Poland, reports the BBC.
Critics of the ruling are concerned about what message it will send about religious tolerance and how it will affect exports of kosher and halal meat. A similar measure was supported and approved in the Netherlands last year, but failed to pass after public outcry that a ban would violate religious freedom.

All hard-won welfare laws are everywhere rolled back.
It makes me despair
Hadn't seen this thread before - it is my favourite 'soap box' subject (next to puppy mills) Have signed any that I hadn't seen elsewhere. There is NO enforcable European Animal Welfare Law. Every member state does as it pleases - it has no jurisdiction to stop Germany having animal brothels and this I got from one of my MEPs. It is disgraceful and it is time it got the bad publicity it deserves because it has done nothing for animals. If stray dogs were being massacred in the streets in the UK then UK law would prosecute but the EU does NOTHING which is why Romania and Greece etc etc ad nauseum get away with it. Every petition about animal welfare in these countries needs copying to the bloody EU until they change their law and make it enforcable across the whole of the member states. As you say Lenicka - more concern given to whether a cucumber is straight or not than to the torture of bulls in Spain, the hideous treatment of greyhounds in Spain. It is the reason why nothing is done about bad zoos - the European Directive pontificates about the FIVE FREEDOMS for animals but does nothing to enforce it.Each member state has to implement this any way it wants to resulting in chaos. It is about time that the Eurocrats earned their massive salaries and expenses bills and brought in some Animal Welfare Legislation across the board and with teeth.
We can not by our silence be complicit in violence against helpless beings, ignore the non implementation of laws protecting them and at the same time pretend to serenely embody a mature sense of Humanity.
European citizens concerned about animals ask that the European animal welfare law be enacted and / or applied. They are shocked, disgusted and traumatized by the impunity enjoyed by torturers. They see their actions too often ignored in court. They believe that the protection of citizens and children begins by teaching them respect for Life.

THE EU COMMISSION SUSTAINES THE EUROPEAN LAW ON STRAYS REQUIRED BY OIPA
On December 2011 OIPA, in cooperation with Andrea Zanoni, member of the European Parliament, delivered over 112.000 signatures to the Petitions Committee for the protection of strays, deep attention to the stop of the mass euthanize of them in European countries and in Spain and Romania as well.
The Petitions Committee, directed by Erminia Mazzoni, having considered what presented and sustained, have made the enquire their own, inviting officially the European Union and all the members to ratify the European Convention for the Protection of Pet Animals and to write down the dispositions on their national juridical items too.

The EU passed a ban on animal testing in 2003 it has already started to be put into effect, and should be completely in effect by 2013
Unfortunately, there are still several animal-testing loopholes that wont be closed until 2013 (reproductive toxicity, repeat dose toxicity, and toxicokinetics animal testing is still allowed) so I wouldnt describe all European companies as being animal-testing-free quite yet. But still a HUGE leap forward and a cause for celebration!

Eurogroup for Animals believes the resignation of Commissioner Dalli announced last night brings new hope for Europe’s animals. Many important decisions have been left in the air by Commissioner Dalli including maintaining the hard fought for ban on testing cosmetics on animals.
Eurogroup therefore calls on Malta to present a new Commissioner as quickly as possible that will work to improve the welfare of all animals, in particular during transport, by strengthening and fully implementing the animal welfare strategy, adopt a robust animal health law, and introduce measures that will protect Europe’s pets.
“The future for improving the welfare of animals starts today and we hope that the new Commissioner for Health and Consumer Protection once appointed will act quickly and decisively to ensure that all outstanding legislation pays full regard to the welfare requirements of animals,” commented Veronique Schmit Executive Officer Policy at Eurogroup for Animals.

done. i agree with all of you. the animals cannot afford to wait one more minute for the torture to stop! they keep contradicting themselves. it cannot be both ways. protecting animals until they are slaughtered? what is that? all they are saying in all their mumbo jumbo is that they don't give a damn and just want us to shut up and to let them continue to abuse and murder the animals.
Infuriated EU citizens
The petition below ais already on a topic that we signed this days but it fits perfect in this topic too.
It let see the 'flexibility' of the EU as a big company is visiting the EU.
15 years !!!!!! they needed to forbid animal testing for cosmetics and than the cosmetic industry sent a lobbyist and than;
" Oh yes , we will wait another ???? year before we forbid it. How long do you think you need ?
Another 15 year ? OK !! We find something to tell our stupid citizens why we do this.
We are the power , they not ! "
(Did you know a lobbyist get more money than we all together for his job as EU lobbyist for a big company ?)

Live animal transport is another issue the EU totally fails...
Brussels, 11 October 2012
European Parliament must outlaw conflict between long-distance transport of live animals and EU social legislation
Eurogroup for Animals calls on the European Parliament’s Agriculture
Committee to reject long-distance transport of live animals when it votes on
the Report prepared by Janusz Wojciechowski MEP. This comes in light of a
new report published recently which compares current transport times of
livestock with the EU social law on drivers’ hours. The research shows that
both laws are incompatible and that if the mandatory application of the
social legislation governing lorry drivers is applied only multi-manning
with three drivers will allow a journey to be compliant with the
Eurogroup therefore calls on the European Parliament to act now and ensure
that both road safety and the welfare of animals are respected and the
inconsistencies in current legislation are addressed. The European Union has
had legislation in place to regulate the protection of farm animals in
transit either to another farm for fattening or to the slaughterhouse since
1977. No other EU protection law has been so controversial and ineffective,
with widespread problems of enforcement and lack of compliance which result
in continued animal suffering. The European Commissioner in charge of animal
welfare has repeated several times that he has no intention of reviewing the
Transport Directive but with this evidence, a change is needed or no long
distance transport should be authorised
More animals are transported than ever and the number of consignments has
greatly increased, looking at the transport of pigs alone we see an increase
of 70% today compared to 2005. This increase in transport volume goes
against the European Food Safety Authority’s scientific advice, published in
January 2011 which clearly stated that we “reduce the volume of transport
and long distance transport of animals for finishing or slaughter or
reducing journey times”.
Commenting before the Committee’s vote in Brussels Dr Michel Courat, Policy
Officer - Farm Animals at Eurogroup for Animals stated: “We are pleased that
after years of providing evidence about illegal transport, it is finally
acknowledged that there are widespread problems of compliance. But in
addition to animal suffering, the research highlights the illegality of many
long distance transports. This not only affects animals but puts human
safety at risk and the European Parliament must act to address this
“We are extremely grateful to Dr Rabitsch and Dr Wessely for the work they
have done. It is unbelievable that the European Commission has not acted to
ensure that these two pieces of legislation are compatible. The European
Parliament now has an opportunity to put pressure on the Commission to act
and help the millions of animals that are being transported illegally every
year,” he concluded
Eurogroup calls for the introduction of an overall journey time limit which
will end overly long journeys. Transport conditions must also be
dramatically improved and modern technology, such as satellite navigation
systems, introduced if authorities are to control movements in real time
- ENDS -.

Well stated dear Lenicka and Monika! I'm completely, totally and fully agree with both of you, as an EU citizen, of course. Signed with both my hands, also as an infurieted EU citizen

Back on top
Lenicka you are so right! I so agree with you! (I am EU citizen, too).
I thought it was a joke when I heard it ! They do NOTHING for animals, NOTHING for the rainforest. This prize can be thrown in the trash and it hurts those who are fighting for peace in this world, risking their lives to improve conditions for humans, animals and environment
As a EU citizen I really don't know why the EU should have a Nobelprize for Peace. Peace for who ?
The speculators, bankers and politicians are getting richer and richer. And those who have had little, become poorer and poorer. And who are the victims? The animals. People cut first on the expense of their animals or simply have no money to feed them. The shelters are fuller than ever.
But governments have no money left for animal welfare.
All EU countries have huge budget deficits, economize on everything, and animal welfare is at the bottom of the priority list to give money for.
This means that neither facilities for animals or for animal rights , is money or attention. This applies to pets and farm animals.
And there was already so little attention. Farmers had 12 years time, to give their cage hens more space. The pigs are still with thousands in a hall in narrow cages, etc.
The list is really endless.
But also about the environment and nature, the EU takes not decisions , or again very wrong.
Decisions that again only labeled economy as important , but animals and nature damaged.
Like the use of forests, agricultural land and environment, for to grow biogas / diesel products .
Economic growth is the creed of the EU. Animals are of no importance and environment either not.
This is not a peace prize worth.
Here a few petitions that let see the failure of the EU. And there are a lot more !!
""Dear friends and friends of the rain forest, The European Union (EU) decided again on biofuel policy. Million tonnes of biofuel are under EU law, the super and diesel fuel mixed with off-road. Shortly, the European Commission put forward proposals, which will then be adopted by the EU Council of Ministers and the European Parliament. Meanwhile, although clear to all concerned that biofuel is a fatal mistake and harmful. Energy from the fields is based almost exclusively on food and of the Hungry on Earth. Also devours the cultivation of biofuel plants, huge tracts of land at the expense of tropical forests and biodiversity. Huge amounts of CO2 into the atmosphere and thereby escape ruin the world's climate. But lobby groups make to the EU to pressure that the current biofuel policies will continue. Because of the statutory EU for biofuel blending quotas, tax credits and subsidies are a billion dollar business. We demand the end of the biofuel madness!
Please support our petition to the EU."
Enough is enough!
