Huckabee Blames Shooting in CT on Lack of Prayer in Schools

GOPer Mike Huckabee blames shooting on lack of prayer in school

Former Republican presidential candidate, Mike Huckabee, who likes to pretend that he’s not as crazy as the rest of the Republican party, today proposed that prayer in school would have saved the lives of the twenty mostly-five-to-ten-year-olds who were killed in a shooting rampage in a Connecticut elementary school:

HOST: Invariably people ask after tragedies like this, how could God let this happen?

HUCKABEE: Well you know, it’s an interesting thing. We ask why there’s violence in our schools, but we’ve systematically removed God from our schools. Should we be so surprised that schools have become a place of carnage? Because we’ve made it a place where we don’t want to talk about eternity, life, what responsibility means, accountability. That we’re not just gonna be accountable to the police of they catch us, but one day we stand before a holy God in judgment. If we don’t believe that, then we don’t fear that. And I sometimes, when people say, why did God let it happen, God wasn’t armed, he didn’t go to the school… maybe we ought to let him in on the front end and we wouldn’t have to call him to show up when it’s all said and done at the back end.

It’s actually quite radical what Huckabee just proposed. He didn’t propose just having prayer in America’s public school system, but apparently now government employees in public schools are supposed to teach your kids responsibility and accountability by letting them know that they’re going to have to face God after they die, so they’d better do their homework and not shoot up the entire class.

Conservatives, who are always preaching about the family, and about the evils of big government, now say it’s the government’s job to teach your kids responsibility and accountability – for starters – but the schools are supposed to do it religiously.

How exactly would that work?  Would first grade teachers have to go the seminary?  Should the government test teachers on whether they have the “right” religious knowledge – that’d be interesting.  And what do teachers do if the class contains some Mormons, some Baptists, some Catholics, and some Muslims?  I mean, the Baptists think the Catholics are (literally) Satan-worshippers.  So what if the teacher’s a Catholic – are the Baptists going to be put up with that? Doubtful.  Or even better, what if the teacher’s a Muslim – can you imagine the Fox News Huckabees of the world, Michele Bachmann among them, accepting a Muslim teaching our “Christian” kindergartners about the one true God?  Holy creeping Sharia, Batman!  Never gonna happen.

Here’s a crazy idea: How about their parents teach them all of that?

It almost sounds like Huckabee is saying that those children, or at least their parents, deserved it, or at the very least he absolutely seems to be saying that the elementary school itself, and the local school district, and through them the parents who run the school system, brought this tragedy on themselves by kicking God out of the school.  Let me quote that again:

We ask why there’s violence in our schools, but we’ve systematically removed God from our schools. Should we be so surprised that schools have become a place of carnage?

Yes, Mr. Huckabee, we should be surprised when someone shoots 20 of our kids dead in elementary school.  We shouldn’t nod knowingly and suggest that either God got even with those mostly-five-to-ten-year-olds for their local school board not appointing the local kindergarten teacher as minister, or at the very least, the parents brought this on themselves, and thus are to blame for their own kids getting mowed down by a fan of the Second Amendment.

You’ll notice one “God” missing from Huckabee’s comments, that would be his gun God.  That God never needs to be more responsible and accountable.  And as a result, children will keep dying.

I did not watch Huckabee sat. nite and everything I am reading about that show is negative.

I hope the author misconstrued Huckabee's intent as this does not sound like him but he has the interview up in full print.

I am tired of all this God punishment talk, it sounds like the scarey indoctrination I had to endure in Catholic school.

I dont agree with the growing secularism in this society which bans celebrating christmas, having nativitiy scenes up, etc.  I also think people need to be very careful on who they blame for this horrific tragedy.

This incident will be investigated thoroughly and there is far more information we are unaware of right now.  it is going to come to light and then we can stop blaming each other, e.g. the left blaming the right and the right blaming the left.

There was one shooter and I am not sure if he was aligned with politics at all.

The "reporting" on this incident has been terrible but par for the course for the media as we have seen with other incidents like the Zimmerman/Martin shooting in FL or the total lack of interest in the Fast and Furious and Benghazi stories. Hard to have "national discussions" on issues when there is this type of media coverage by a media that has its own agenda.

Like more "gun control" knee jerk reactions, I have a problem with injecting religion in schools (although teaching moderation and self restraint rather than do your on thing or equal outcome would be an improvement) and am wary of more government action to force treatment on the mentally ill as has also been raised. Although the pendulum on that may have swung to the most hands off approach, it is important to look at past abuses here and the tendency of authoritarian governments to brand those who oppose it or its ideas as "mentally ill" when discussing that aspect of this incident.

I think the Obama admin. want the public to focus on this shooting and gun control as it detracts the Benghazi mess which they will not address.    Hillary's latest excuse not to appear is almost calculated ... they have no intentions of coming out with their responses to benghazi; they are wording their defense to the CIA report.

They do not want their fingerprints on anything here.  This is a volatile mess and far worse than Watergate.  I am so tired of all of these phoney players who would not tell the truth or know the truth if it hit them over the head.  They are adept at making it up as they go along. Expect nothing from anyone of them; don't hold your breath.

Iranian Supreme Leader Agrees With Mike Huckabee on School Shooting
5 years ago

The struggle to understand a tragedy, such as the Sandy Hook Elementary school shooting, can make for strange bedfellows. In an odd moment, former Arkansas governor Mike Huckabee and Iranian Supreme Leader Ayatollah Ali Khamenei seem to have (unintentionally) converged on similar conclusions about the event’s cause: lack of religion.

It’s not clear how direct of a line Huckabee wants to draw between Friday’s shooting and an absence of religion in schools. But he drew wide criticism for possibly suggesting as much on Fox News recently. The full interview transcript can be found here, with the key quote below (emphasis added):

Well, you know it’s an interesting thing. We ask why there’s violence in our schools but we’ve systematically removed God from our schools. Should we be so surprised that schools would become a place of carnage because we’ve made it a place where we don’t want to talk about eternity, life, what responsibility means, accountability. That we’re not just going to have to be accountable to the police if they catch us but one day we stand before a holy God in judgment. If we don’t believe that, then we don’t fear that.

Monday, Huckabee is apparently joined by the supreme leader of the Islamic Republic of Iran, Ali Khamenei. According to Digarban, an independent Web outlet that covers the Iranian media, one of Khamenei’s official representatives announced that a “lack of religion in the United States is the main reason of the school shooting.”

Khamenei often speaks through official representatives, though this one bears a title of “representative in the Caspian [region],” which does not suggest seniority. If the representative really was speaking for the supreme leader and not just taking a bit of creative license with his job title, then the statement was likely meant for domestic consumption, not as a slight on Americans.

Both Khamenei and Huckabee, of course, are attempting a larger point than simply blaming Sandy Hook’s victims for the shooting. Huckabee explained in his Fox News interview,

“Maybe we ought to let [God] in on the front end and we wouldn’t have to call him to show up when it’s all said and done at the back end.” And Khamenei (or his representative) was probably just using Sandy Hook to drive home the regime’s oft-repeated message about the importance of religion in all things. Still, for all these two figures’ differences in tone and perspective, it’s a jarring moment of coincidence.

I think people need to zipper it up ... God is not responsible for this, God being in or out of this Adam's life would not make a difference.

Adam had serious problems and I am amazed that Huckabee is judging his life now.  We do not know the Lanza family's life and belief systems.  They appear to be good people and they did things right for a very long time.  A mother who loves her child unconditionally should not be judged.  She may have been in denial at some point in her life and it appears she did seek help in the end.

Cases like this are very hard to comprehend.  Was it too much too late and not enough  early on which is the real problem here.

If the mom told Adam he was being committed that is huge when he never had an intervention before.     That is hitting someone over the head with a bat  as a comparison.

Those lock ups are loss of your personal freedom.  You are being watched every 5-15 minutes someone is checking on you.  You need to ask to take a shower, you have to ask for everything..... this is very hard for someone who has never had one intervention before.

Again, each person reacts differently because not everyone resorts to violence.

Instead of religion, I think ethics and civics 101 should be required subjects.

Elizabeth;  that would help and satisfy the liberals I hope!   Ethics is so important and everyone should be exposed to moral, legal ethics but the progressives cannot do their own spin on this one!   I don't trust them anymore as they are too intent on their brand of indoctrination.

You know how bad it is in MA.

I don't want to say everything liberal is bad because it is not.  I don't like being smothered with one idealogy; whatever happen to free will and choice.  Kids need to be shown both sides and stop brainwashing.

There is a distinction between conservatives vs. liberals and there are conservative democrats who boldly state they are and because they are dems don't brand them as the Obama types.   I know a few and they don't get all of this stuff politically because they don't get into the media stuff.

but the progressives cannot do their own spin on this one!

That occurred to me too. They can ruin a free lunch!

Elizabeth;  the progressives are all over the place in MA and that was Romney's problem.

People voted NO for gay marriage in the polls ... yet a republican governor puts in a radical judge who makes gay marriage law.

Conservative Democrats and repubicans would NOT vote for Romney as they did not trust him.

I don't care about gay marriage as I am surrounded by LGBT people and they don't affect me one way or another.  Some are my friends so I lightened up.

The progressive agenda is all over MA be it democrats or republicans... it is here.

How many stories have we read about a lone gunman walking into a school back in the 50's, 60's, 70's, etc?    There weren't any to my knowledge.   People didn't do things like that probably because parents who had mentally ill children put them in the appropriate homes/hospitals and got them out of society.

Truth is, we did have prayer in the classrooms, and we did stand tall every morning and crossed our hearts for the Pledge of Allegiance.    None of us were watching or playing violent videos every day and most of us lived in a househld with ONE INCOME.  Mom was at home waiting for us and dinner was on the stove.

So, let's give Mike Huckabee a break.    He may not have said the right words but IMO he had the right idea.   Our country has gone to hell in a hand basket due to all of the liberal initiated  political correctness that was wrecked our country.

Diane:  I like Mike Huckabee and respect him more than the other politicians out there.

You are right, there needs to be more of the old-fashioned classroom ways .. I never had prayer only at Catholic school, not in public.  However, every single day we pledged allegiance to the Flag and it hung in every single one of my classrooms.

They closed down mental hospitals.   In MA, liberal progressive Mike Dukakis closed more than 50% of our state mental hospitals.   Now, we are in a pickle as there are no places to put them, no beds!   Thanks to the progressive liberals who think they know it all.   Dukakis has a wife with mental problems and many question this guy's motives.   He is one idiot and he contradicts himself constantly.

I don't think there was that much mental illness back in the days; there is far more today because stupid young pregnant women drink lots of booze, do drugs during their pregnancy.   The fetus is affected.

There is so much smoking, drinking and drugging today and there was not before.

There is far too much time spent on computers, watching tv, videos, etc. and violent games are the thing.   Not enough kids go out and play in the fresh air, they do not interact with one another enough.

This starts in the home; parents cannot let kids isolate consistently ... unhealthy!

Join teams, put kids in groups ... even groups for asperger's so they can relate and not know they are the only ones like this!

But, the right cannot jump the bandwagon here either.   The left does it with banning guns and the right does it with bring god into classroom..... just bring in the pledge of allegiance.

I hated Catholic School, they were obsessive and public school was not ....
