Please pray for his family and his congregation, Calvary Chapel of Costa Mesa.
(Costa Mesa, CA)—Pastor Chuck Smith lost his battle with lung cancer this morning. He was 86.
He was credited with instigating the rise of the massive "Jesus People" Movement in the 1960's.
According to a Charisma News report, "Smith began pastoring at Calvary Chapel in Costa Mesa, California, in 1965, and was known for his less formal and contemporary approach to worship and church services. His ministry continued to grow until his death.
"He was lauded for bridging the 'generation gap' that existed during the Vietnam War era and was popular among the 'hippie' culture. [He] often conducted outreaches on the beaches of California and performed baptisms in the Pacific Ocean.
