Children who are burnt, tortured, ostricised or killed: That is the reality for many African children who because of superstitions is seen as witches. It may for instance be because of the need to find a scapegoat after a death in the family in which case it is easy to accuse a child of witchcraft because the child can not defend themselves.
In the state of Akwa Ibom in Nigeria, this is a considerable problem, and the children who survive torture, usually ends up living a lonely and miserable life on the streets.
Therefore, superstition is one of the biggest challenges parts of Nigeria is facing. No matter what people die from, it is often being attributed to witchcraft. Crimes such as armed robbery is said to be caused by it. Even debilitating diseases as well as ordinary colds are linked to witchcraft. Each year, thousands of children are accused of being witches, and most of them end up being ostricised and some even die alone on the street.
YourAID cooperate with the charity organisation CRARN (Child’s Right And Rehabilitation Network), which works to change people’s attitudes towards witchcraft and minors.
