Please help by adding your voice to the campaign and urging the district magistrate to take action against the accused officer immediately. The beautiful donkey seemed to be trying to protect the poor dog. The driver crushed, tortured and slaughtered her.

By Nick Metcalfe

READERS have bombarded the Daily Express switchboard with calls pledging to join our crusade to stop cruelty against the donkeys of Santorini.

Since we highlighted the animals’ plight, hundreds of callers have told us how they, too, have witnessed appalling scenes.
Helen Sharpe, 53, from Woking, Surrey, visited Santorini earlier this year and was disgusted by the treatment she saw meted out to the donkeys. “We saw three or four of the donkeys whipped with a brush. It was an absolute disgrace,” she said.

Barbara Richards, 70, from Blackpool, was on the holiday island a few weeks ago and was appalled by what she witnessed.
“I will never go to a Greek island again,” she said. “These large ships came in and big American tourists climbed on these poor donkeys.”

Terry Jenkins, 58 from Manchester, also visited recently and said: “It is dangerous – both for the donkeys and people, who could easily be barged over.”
Sue Driver, co-founder of the Follys Farm Sanctuary for Donkeys in Hertfordshire, offered to take one donkey and one mule into her care. She said: “I’m really angry about the tourists – they should have more sense, particularly if they are overweight.”

Animal lover Mary Andrews, 74, from London, said: “Donkeys are lovely. They speak with their eyes, if only they could actually speak.”
Veterinary nurse Gail Jackson, 48, from Mansfield, Notts, said: “Donkeys are actually happy creatures, but I could tell from your picture how unhappy they are, just from their body language.”

Patricia Walker, 65, from Chesham, Bucks, said: “I think these tourists are just lazy and if they walked some more then they would probably lose some weight.”

Caroline Walton, 76, from Selby, Yorks, said: “It doesn’t seem like the Greeks care terribly much about animals.”

Pamela Kennedy, 62, from Rotherham, said: “I think people should boycott the island. I know donkeys were made to carry things, but it has gone far too far.”

An RSPCA spokesman said: “We urge the owners of these animals to make sure that they are humanely cared for.
“We understand the Greek authorities are treating these things more seriously now, and the tourist board will take complaints.

Brick and Donkey: A Foundation of Abuse

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=C22Mg-TFMf4

Uploaded by herojig on 3 Feb 2009

This video was inspired by the work of Lucia DeVries and others, who have started to organize health camps and other projects in order to help the Nepali Brick Kiln Donkey, as well as other workers in the pits - underage children. These folks are pioneering animal welfare where it dared not go before: into many of the over 500 brick kilns seen belching black smoke throughout the Kathmandu Nepal.

In addition to these health camps, staffed 100% by volunteers from the community, several organizations are helping animalNEPAL establish a formal outreach program for these animals in need. This outreach program, once funded, will include a pharmacy that provides medicine to kiln owners at reduced cost, as well as a Donkey Refuge Center that will nurse discarded kiln donkeys back to health.

This video was produced and then donated by the kind folks at Phoenix Studios Nepal, at no cost to animalNEPAL. We thank them for their hard work, and encourage all in need of multimedia production and recordings to call these folks when planning any audio or video project.
