"If the President approves the pipeline, this . . . fight that will stretch out for years into the future," said Sierra Club's Michael Brune, adding that he expects civil disobedience "all along the 1,700-miles" of pipeline construction.

this is my line in the sand with obama. sounds like even the tea party is agaisnt it in texas or did i mis-read that?

Well.. yes, sure the Tea Party is against it, they are rallied behind Sarah Palin, "Drill Baby, Drill!" in the Artic. I believe this was Hilary Clinton's brainchild, so the Tea Party would never be for it.

I understand both perspective of wanting to be independant of foriegn oil- but not at the price of destroying entire ecosystems for stock in oil.

They need to find a clean, safe, renewable energy, already. We could have developed that technology for the price, and the time, we went to Iraq to steal theirs!

this is what i was referring to..

"If he approves the pipeline, Obama “can be assured we will continue to pursue a variety of strategies, from work in the courts, to lobbying and organizing within state governments, particularly in Nebraska and down in Texas where we are working with the Tea Party,” Brune said. “There will be an organized strategy to keep this pipeline from being built.”"

i agree though, it doesnt seem like something they would be against...

Yea.. the Tea Party wants Sarah Palins Drilling Alaska plan. Terrible idea for the envirnment, wonderful idea for Palin's bank account.

Those fighting to keep the Keystone XL pipeline out of the Sand Hills scored a major victory Thursday when the State Department announced it will delay a decision on the project until 2013 to get more information about alternate routes through Nebraska.

Today, the Obama Administration through the State Department announced a new environmental review of the proposed Keystone XL tar sands pipeline that is likely to last through early 2013. This is a tremendous victory in a campaign that has pitted people from all walks of life against dirty tar sands. By calling for a new environmental review of the Keystone XL pipeline, President Obama is displaying leadership and a continued strong commitment to protections for land, air, water, climate and public health. He heard Nebraskans, Texans, Montanans and others ask for protection of their land and water.  He heard masses of students, teachers, faith leaders and others ask for a strong stance against climate change. The President is doing what is in the interest of the American people and showing leadership on climate and energy at home and abroad.

Had the Keystone XL pipeline been approved by the end of the year, it would have carried tar sands, the dirtiest oil on the planet, through the heartland of America for likely export. It would also have signaled to Big Oil that expansion of the tar sands could proceed.

The President already made clear that he is listening to the concerns of Nebraskans as they hold a special legislative session called by Republican Governor Heineman to take ownership of the siting of pipelines across their lands. Three to one, Nebraskans oppose the current proposed route across the Ogallala Aquifer.

And over the last few months, we have witnessed historic numbers of people willing to risk arrest, willing to come to Washington to rally, and willing to reach out at campaign offices and events to send a clear message that the Keystone XL pipeline takes us backward on dirty energy at a time we need to be doing all we can to fight the very real threat to our country of climate change.

This announcement cuts short the State Department’s arbitrary deadline for a decision by the end of the year. By moving away from the flawed route, the Administration essentially acknowledges that there have been problems with the State Department review process to date, showing that they do indeed stand by their commitment to transparent and participatory government. It is critical that this new review avoid the conflicts of interest of the past.

We look forward to continuing to work with the Administration to make sure that the review is as thorough as possible. A fresh review provides the Administration the time to get this decision right and to gather information about the ways in which this tar sands pipeline would hurt our health, water, farms and climate. With this information in hand, the only possible decision will be to reject the Keystone XL pipeline.

The American people asked for Presidential leadership and they got it.

The Obama administration announced Thursday it would delay a politically explosive decision on the proposed Keystone XL oil sands pipeline until after the 2012 elections.

The pipeline is especially treacherous waters for President Obama because it splits key elements of his base. While green groups oppose it, several major unions are pushing for approval.

Keystone had become a serious thorn in Obama’a side, with environmental groups warning they’d feel betrayed if the pipeline moved forward.

im not so sure i love this. it opens up the possiblity for a republican president to make that decision. he will also lose some of his environmental base...this was kind of my line in the sand with obama. i think it was a candy ass decision.

Im not sure a Republican couldnt overturn a decision anyhow. At least it buys us sme time.

Bush overturned a 40 year Endangered Species Act for his hunting buddies because Sarah had the need to shoot wolves {of course to make it safer for when they drill for oil in Alaska...}

well what happens if a republican gets the potus in 2012. since obama has set it up so the decision comes after the elections an anti environmental republican pres would approve that pipeline. i think it was a poor decision for obama and i really think it was a political move.

he shouldve just said no.

Yes, It might be a politcal move... if Greenpeace has it's was they wont be drilling in Alaska either, so they are probably leaving that door opened with another famous 'loophle". Actally Obama recently approved for Shell to start drilling there, and BP is drilling in the Gulf again!

So? What can we do? Whats next?

U.S. Seeks New Keystone Pipeline Route

The decision was a victory for environmental groups, who say producing oil sands crude emits large amounts of greenhouse gases. It was a blow to TransCanada Corp, which planned to build and operate the conduit.

what part of this can destroy our climate do they not understand?

Glad that it has at least been delayed, and glad that they are looking to find a route that does not risk contaminating to Ogallala Aquifer.

Nevertheless, it ain't over yet, and the administration is just delaying this unpopular project until after the elections.  Better keep pushing against it.

I agree that it is necessary to keep up the pressure against this project. A delay though is a victory that motivated people can make a difference even if is people in the 99.

Although I've been signing petitions and protesting the pipeline as well as calling the WH - this to my mind is only a prelude to the problem that has the potential of jeopardizing the health, lives, environment and wildlife of upstate NY and Penn, and the massive urban areas that are dependent on the Delaware Water Basin for bathing, cooking and consumption - the NYC water reservoirs are located directly on sites planned for immediate drilling with leases signed and our parks are even about to be violated as well - all this because we are sitting on the Marcellus Shale (the "Saudi Arabia" of natural gas) - extending from W Va to NY - if you're familiar with "Gasland" you'll understand just how frightening this intended means of energy is - we are on weeks away from a vote that may license this destruction of our water and the building of a pipeline from the Catskill Mtns. through NJ and into Manhattan at 14th St crossing the Hudson River - the utter madness of this puts 15.6 million people in jeopardy - the drilling has started with 135 incidents of explosions and the poisoning of water wells as well as leaks into the Susqehanna River - this is alarming as a NYC native, and so many are ignorant of the term "hydraulic fracturing" "fracking" here and are totally unaware of the danger that this tsunami represents - perhaps it's because this affects my neighborhood more than the "sands pipe" does, but I consider them both to be worthy of concern and protests - including the sit down blocking of drilling and bulldozing! We have to spend the millions on clean energy ( something they claim "natural gas" is) well it is, once the most foul and dirty, and destructive means of exhuming the gas invented by man is completed - this is worse than the shearing of the Appalachians for coal - all for a limited amount of energy, and a precious few jobs - and those jobs are lethal - so much so that the Texans running these operations don't go there, but conduct their drilling in the safety of their buildings in Texas - how modern tech protects the 1% - this is truly a fight for our lives!

Agree with you, Lee- FRACKING is another major problem, and Im not even sure the average person knows what that is... along with the water pollution it causes, there may now be a link between the technique and earthquakes-
