What Is Your Favorite Memory? May 30, 2005 6:12 AM
Memories regarding our loved ones may be loving, or sad, or sometimes hurtful.
One special memory I have of my mother is rather funny! She could be quite a character if she wanted to... She was very beautiful when she was young and she, along with her youngest brother, belonged to an amateur acting company. She was a fine actress and would have had a wonderful career if her parents had allowed her to... However, back in those times, it wasn't considered as a reputable career!
This story proves that she was also good at improvising:
One day, the three of us. Mom, Dad, and I (I'm an only child) decided to have dinner at a seafood restaurant in the "Fishermen's Village" area, in the old part of Naples. It certainly wasn't a sophisticated place, but it was quaint and the food was "out of this world"! Well, it was very crowded that Sunday and tables were very close together to allow more customers... Next to us, there was a couple, waiting to be served. The lady soon started a conversation with my mother... First, it was general, then it became a little more personal... In fact, she asked what she was doing for a living. Mom responded that she had a huge shoe store! The lady asked her where it was located... Mom gave her a made-up address... "Oh, and are you having any sales at this time of the year?" Asked the lady. "Of course, and I can give you a discount!" "What's the name of the place?" "Bianca's" (which was Mom's real name)... And they both went on and on... Dad and I were just watching the scene, laughing and not believing our ears! The lady wandered what it was that we were finding so funny... "You know, father and daughter joke all the time! She's only 9..." said Mom.
Before leaving, that couple made arrangements to visit our shoe store the following week because they had been promised an extra DISCOUNT! It was hilarious! Mom said she couldn't resist... they were being too "nosey" and so she improvised!
