Green cabs take off January 08, 2006 6:50 PM
NEW environmentally friendly taxi is to be be trialled in Sydney's metropolitan area.
The New South Wales Taxi Council and Legion Cabs have developed the 12-month pilot program using the first hybrid-electric cab.
Transport Minister John Watkins today said the trial would clearly benefit the environment.
"I commend the industry for examining the commercial use of alternative fuels, which produce less carbon dioxide exhaust emissions," Mr Watkins said.
"The use of hybrid vehicles benefits the environment, but we have to ensure they can provide an economically viable alternative for the taxi industry."
NSW Taxi Council chief executive Howard Harrison said the trial would look at the cost of the hybrid engine, as well as fuel, maintenance, repairs and downtime.
