MEXICAN WOLF POSTER #511 SENTANCED TO DEATH May 26, 2005 2:56 PM

MEXICAN WOLF POSTER GIRL SENTANCED TO DEATH

Mexican Gray Wolf 511, the beautiful female Poster Wolf for the Mexican Wolf Recovery Program, is one of the Francisco Pack under the "lethal take" order for being implicated in killing 7 cows/calves.

As the first Mexican Wolf to step away from the brink of extinction in 1998 and feel freedom beneath her paws, she's done her best to be a good recovery wolf. She's earned a comfortable retirement, not a death sentence!

When ranchers don't pick up their dead cows, they train wolves that cows are something to eat. Studies show a 91% correlation between wolves who scavenge on dead livestock and those who attack stock. Since 511 just had 5 puppies, it's not surprising the pack took the ranchers' serving suggestion.

The Mexican Wolves, our 4-legged lobos, belong to all US citizens. They work to make a living on our public land, which we allow ranchers to graze their cows on at a subsidy price. We need ranchers on the land to prevent endless suburbia! We also need our top predators, wolves, who would control the elk population that they complain eat cow food.

Why should this wolf pay the ultimate price for being a wolf in a minefield of human politics? Ask those in charge to please commute the death sentence of our Poster Wolf:

Update 5/25/05
Talked to Colleen Buchanen(USF&W-Sevilleta) yesterday, who said they've provided 511 with a food cache. Being the good, smart wolf that she is, she's using it to feed herself. They are giving her till the pups are 6 weeks old. If they haven't caught her by then, they will take the pups in, and then she could be killed.

Thank you!
