First Anime June 07, 2004 6:38 PM

hey I was wondering what anime got people into anime? When I was young I loved Robotech, I thought it was the coolest, and of course there is astroboy then my dad rented me Akira... so that's where I started...  [ send green star]  [ accepted]

 June 07, 2004 7:01 PM

what started me off was Gundam Wing, then came robotech, after that was umm..... Neon Genesis Evangelion, next was rurouni kenshin, inuyasha, big-o, cowboy bebop, and last but not least, a movie called Yukikaze..  [ send green star]  [ accepted]

First anime June 07, 2004 7:05 PM

Hmm...let's see. I guess the first anime I can remember appreciating as anime was "Princess Mononoke". Quite some time after seeing that, I happened to see a thing for "Please Save My Earth" on Netflix, so I rented that and enjoyed it. The first thing that REALLY got me into anime would probably be watching Inuyasha on Adult Swim (yes, I watch the dubbed version. Big deal). I still don't think I can be labeled as an "anime fan" because I don't really seek out new anime. I just like a few shows that happen to be anime. I'm sure there were several anime shows that I watched when I was younger, but since I didn't know what anime was at the time, I just thought of them as cartoons like any other cartoon I watched. Thus, I can't really remember any.  [ send green star]  [ accepted]

 June 08, 2004 6:51 AM

I grew up watching Professor IQ, Robotech, Gundam, and Voltron. I remember seeing the 11 eps. OVA of Tenchi Muyo in college (not the tv series). Fushigi Yuugi, Inuyasha, Ayashi No Ceres, alot of the Miyazaki stuff. I also watched Saturday Anime on SciFi which featured Iria, Armitage III, Demon City, is that on anymore or is it only Adult Swim?  [ send green star]

Intro To Anime... June 08, 2004 9:48 AM

Started watching anime in college with Five Star Story and City Hunter. Was introduced to Fushugi Yugi and manga about the same time and I was pretty hooked. Fell in love with Kenshin next and introduced it to all of my friends. =) Read the translation for Inuyasha online and then watched the anime. Then Armitage III, Ayashi No Ceres, numerous Miyazaki works, and Pilot for Candidate. Most recent animes are Somedays Dreamers, Princess Tutu, and currently watching Witch Hunter Robin.  [ send green star]

Witch Hunter Robin June 08, 2004 10:37 AM

You'll like Witch Hunter Robin. It's a pretty short series, but it gets really interesting into the second half of the series. I was kind of bored with it at first, but I'm glad I stuck around.  [ send green star]  [ accepted]

 June 12, 2004 6:24 PM

Voltron was the first that I saw. I miss it ever so much... That was when I was little. The next was probably Gundam Wing, which is one of my favorite anime series.  [ send green star]  [ accepted]

 June 24, 2004 6:46 PM

I watched the "Unico" movies (those are a rare find these days!) as a young child... Then "Sailor Moon" was on the UPN network when I reached middle school, so I watched that before school in the mornings... In high school, a friend had me watch "Ranma½" with him and I was pretty well hooked but I had no way of getting more anime... So finally, in college, I met up with a boy who made me sit through "Neon Genesis Evangelion" and I had a means of buying more through a local anime store.  [ send green star]  [ accepted]

First Anime August 02, 2004 6:52 PM

When I was really little Sailor Moon was on UPN and I would get up at 5 or 5:30 just to watch it. Now being older I realize how edited the show it. The best way to go with that show is to get the uncut seasons. The last season (Sailor Stars) is the best! Other good animes that I adore are Serial Experiments Lain, Cowboy Bebop, and Azumanga Daioh.  [ send green star]  [ accepted]

 August 03, 2004 9:47 AM

Uncut's okay, but I can't stand the Japanese voices (yes, I'm a rabid sub fan)--never could tell the difference between Usagi and Luna and Usagi was about ten times as annoying as in the English.  [ send green star]  [ accepted]

How can you say Akira sucks??? Thats one of the BEST animes EVER!! And for someone who like Spirggan, I would assume you like Akira too  [ send green star]  [ accepted]

Honestly.... August 09, 2004 5:48 AM

After watching Akira for the 1st time, I thought the movie would have been much cooler, if I had had a few mixed drinks first. o^_^o The first series I ever collected all of, was Tenchi Muyo...within 2 months of seeing my first episode, I owned all of Tenchi Muyo, Techi Universe, and Tenchi in Tokyo. I just Luuuv Ryoko, but I was told I talk and laugh like Washu. How bad is that?! ^_^  [ send green star]  [ accepted]

Gaizka, this is a thread to discuss your introduction to anime. If you want to do a review of a certain anime and discuss the good and bad points, please do so in another thread and let's not try to start fights. Rachel shall hence forth be called "Little Washu" ^_^; j/k  [ send green star]

Back in tha day... October 12, 2004 5:33 PM

I think the first animé I ever watched was Astroboy, along with reading the comics (north american comic books, not the manga). Then, in grade 6, I became obsessed with Sailor Moon (still am a bit) and it just progressed from there. Right now I am partial to Cowboy Bebop and Ranma 1/2. Can't get enough of good ol' quirky Ranma!  [ send green star]  [ accepted]

I got into anime because of a guy I dated about 7 years ago who draws anime.  He's actually a little bit famous now.  Anyone heard of Bryan O'Malley? He has two books out now: Lost at Sea and Scott Pilgrim.  The first show I watched was Sailor Moon...I know, kinda lame and mainstream...but oh well...who can resist Tuxedo Mask?!!  [ send green star]  [ accepted]

My First Anime November 19, 2004 5:33 PM

As a child I love G-Force, Voltron and I was totally into Robotech. Then I moved on to dragonball Z. After a bit I started ordering anime from japan. I got ninja scroll, legend of the overfiend, bubblegum crisis and that was it for me. Now I am a die hard anime freak. LOL  [ send green star]  [ accepted]

 November 30, 2004 3:21 PM

My first anime? Wow.. Um.. Well the literal first one I watched was a subbed version of Sailor Moon Super S. But right after that (the same day) I watched Witch Hunter Robin, Inuyahsa, Ayashi no Ceres, Fushigi Yugi, Battle Athletes, Excel Saga, Gundam Wing Endless Waltz, Princess Mononoke and Akria. ... My best friend had decided to give me a crash course in anime that day. I must say, I've never properly thanked her for starting me down a path that would see me spending nearly all of my paycheck everyweek at the anime/manga store.

So yeah, those are my first animes. But it wasn't until about a month later that I got bored and sat down to watch Ghost in the Shell that I was really hooked.

~* Greetings from the Netherworld *~

Oh, Gods... MY first anime???  At the risk of dating myself... Kimba the White Lion!

How many here have heard/seen that one?  If not, think of Disney's Lion King only Anime style that involved relationships between humans at some point in the later episodes of the stories.  The young Kimba even learned to speak "human" amongst the company of the bipeds!  But the beginning of the whole thing is/was identical to The Loin King

The only 'major' differences: in Kimba, he had an older sister, Leona, a female sidekick named Kitty, an advisor/guide baboon named Daniel, and the major sidekick of 'his Uncle Scar' (yes Kimba's uncle had the same name) was a black panther who's name escapes me right now, as well as TWO hyenas, whereas Lion King has THREE hyenas, no panther, no older sis, and a warthog and merecat.  The father dies pretty much the same way-- is killed-- and Kimba is outcasted... yadda, yadda, yadda.  You get the picture.

After that,    it was G-Force; some anime that involved a bigass battlecruiser-type ship that traveled space (name?); Voltron (5 Lions); ROBOTECH-- never missed an episode; Robotech-Next Gen; Robotech- Sentinels (both aired very briefly); and then I found that most t.v. wouldn't broadcast it for, like forever, until I saw Akira aired on HBO!

Rented out Vampire Hunter D and various others from time to time when I found them...

Quite by accident, I discovered "Adult Swim" on Cartoon Network, which turned me on to-- who else?-- INUYASHA!  My DVD collection will soon be starting here...

I'm starting to becoame a fan of Full Metal Alchemist now too.

The very first one that I saw was Cat Girl Nuku-Nuku!  I learned that it wasn't exactly mainstream when I went to Otakon dressed as her --- but some people still recognized me.

I think I saw a few episodes of Sailor Moon S (Uranus' backstory!) and some Tenchi.  Heh, after that, it sort of took off.  Working through Last Exile right now --- meow!

hhhhhhmmmmmmmm...... January 06, 2005 3:16 AM

hey yall,
Well, originally it must have been Akira, then for weekly tv, I guess it was ROBOTECH.

My old pal / crazy roomate Max used to try to get me into various anime that I just didn't like too much, but finally Robotech must have hooked me over the years.

Also, Ghost in the Shell [the feature film] got me in, & when I started watchin' Bebop, well, I was seriously hooked.

My biggest surprise was Trigun; at first it seemed silly or cheezy, but it grew on me.
Peace,
Rob

Hi there January 31, 2005 5:11 PM

When I was young, the first anime I really liked was Astro Boy, but I also liked Universial Ridder, Transformers, Thunder Cats (I think that was anime), and Voltron. The thing is, it wasn't till I was in my teans that I started thinking of anime as anime. I tend to prefer children's titles, but I also like supernatural titles like Witch Hunter Robin.

My first March 10, 2005 7:38 AM

My first Anime had to be Starblazers and/or G-Force.  I actually watched a couple of episodes recently and couldn't believe how dated they felt...but you always remember your first.  In recent history it would have to be Gundam Wing and Escaflowne that brought me back to the genre  [ send green star]  [ accepted]

I guess March 13, 2005 7:09 AM

That my fist anime was Mazinger Z, and the saber rider, and all those old anime series of the old age, but what really got me in the anime thing as a grown up was Evangelion.  [ send green star]  [ accepted]

Voltron! March 16, 2005 3:33 PM

The first one I remember was Voltron, then Speed Racer. I didn't discover Sailor Moon til high school (deprived childhood, I guess) but now that's probably my favorite.  [ send green star]  [ accepted]

Miyazaki March 19, 2005 1:31 AM

My mom rented Spirited Away for me, she thought it looked interesting... Little did she know what would happen because of that movie! I rented InuYasha shortly afterward, then the Cowboy Bebop movie.. then Laputa.. and I havn't stopped! People say I've seen too much anime for my own good, and now I draw it and hope to become a professional animator someday. So I must give my thanks someday to Miyazaki-sama.

Ok.. my first was actually, Berserk ( dont think I spelled that right), but at that same time I was getting sucked into Inuyasha. Whats weird is when I was a kid, I hated cartoons. It wasn't until, my boyfriend introduced me to anime that I realized how awsome it is. My favorite so far is Trigun, but I like Ghost in the shell, and Cowboy Beebop. I've been watching Aquateen Hunger Force lately... man what a weird series, but funny as hell. Inuyasha is a favorite too.  [ send green star]  [ accepted]

Sailor Moon April 09, 2005 9:32 PM

You know, I actually hate Sailor Moon when I first saw it.  I asked my son, "What the heck is up with their mouths when they yell?"  I thought it was the most dorkified thing I ever saw.  But, the show grew on me and the rest is history.  Now my favorite is Cowboy Bebop (Spike makes me wish I were a cartoon), and also Fullmetal Alchemist.  Oh yeah, that one ties pretty strongly with GITS right now.  [ send green star]  [ accepted]

sailor moon April 26, 2005 7:59 AM

I was really young when I first saw anime and my parents never like the thought of me whatching it but I can't stand the first seson let alone the dubed american version of things so I have to watch it in the original version plus the original makes a lot more sence  [ send green star]  [ accepted]

 April 28, 2005 3:15 PM

I saw various anime back in the 80s, then started liking Sailor Moon in high school. I actually started getting up on time so I could watch it before I had to catch the bus. Unfortunately, I didn't discover it until a few months before I moved. New Kimagure Orange Road is what really made me get into anime. My wife and I started renting all the anime Hollywood Video and Blockbuster had. We're slowly building up our personal collection, but anime is so expensive!  [ send green star]  [ accepted]

When I was little, I watche Sailor Moon and Tenchi Muyo, but I never really got into the whole anime thing.  Then, about 3 years ago, I saw the movie "Spirited Away", and that's what really got me going.  Now, My favorite anime is Dragonball Z (I love Piccolo!), and other favorites include Yu Yu Hakusho (second only to DBZ), Inuyasha, Rurouni Kenshin, Yu-Gi-Oh!, and Fullmetal Alchemist, not to mention the movies I like (Spirited Away; Ghost in the Shell; Tekken; My Neighbor, Totoro).

So in three short years I've gone from anime-oblivious to anime-obsessed.

Hi everyone, I am new here!!

I hope to make new friends here!

My first anime was and old one, I don't remember very well the Japanese title, but it was something along "Robin Hood no Daibôken". (Obvously a Robin Hood anime). Here is one picture d Marian, if anyone else recognized this anime. Marian Lancaster I was traumatized with this anime I could NOT get enough of it! But although it seems imposible, I got traumatized even more with Sailor Moon. I must admit I am a fundie. Either the original thing or it doesn't matter to me. XD (Long live Sailor Uranus!)

Okay, my very first had to be Candy Candy, I'm sure I saw other ones before like Kimba, AstroBoy or Princesa Caballero (sorry don't know the name in English ^_^) but that one got me hook into anime, after that came Remi, Barner and Flappy and others, then for many years I didn't get to see any new anime on TV until Saint Seiya, that got me hook again and got me broke also ^_^;;; Waaaaa!! Why is so expensive!!! Anyway, right now I'm enjoying the manga life as much as I can and going nuts waiting MONTHS for the next issue -_- (I REALLY HATE THAT PART!! -_-;;; )

who popped my anime cherry?!?!? March 07, 2006 6:15 PM

Well, I would have to say that when I was younger, I LOVED Sailor Moon, but it got too complicated, because it got too syndicated.  Later in life, I saw Vampire Hunter D   That was awesome.  But I was never into anime as a "group" until a few years ago, when I found .....drumroll please..... InuYasha!  I absolutely love him!!!!  I also love FMA, s-CRY-ed, and Ghost in the Shell.

I don't have any other members yet, but I started an InuYasha group, for anyone that's interested...

two firsts April 10, 2007 9:22 PM

When I was young, it was Dragon Ball.  Back then, I didn't know what anime was.  Unfortunately, I strayed from it for many years.  I didn't have anyone who could introduce me to the world.  When I was 18, I finally had a friend who introduced me to Animerica (the magazine...remember when it used to have actual MANGA?).  Well, I got hooked to Fushigi Yuugi.  I ended up buying VHS tapes (this was before I had an actual income).  You could say that was my "second" first anime.  I've been hooked (on anime) for going on twelve years.  And I can't live without it.  [ send green star]  [ accepted]

anonymous Vampire Hunter D May 12, 2007 12:18 PM

Back in the day, when Scifi Channel showed anime, I saw Vampire Hunter D. Blew my mind. Never saw blood and gore in animation before Vampire Hunter D. It is my first love.  [report anonymous abuse]  [ accepted]

I do like Vampire Hunter D.  Don't think I liked the second movie as much.  But the first one made me want to write a fanfic.

Lucky for the masses, I didn't.  (Actually, I overwhelmingly prefer writing originals to anything else.  But that's anothe topic.)

Fushigi Yuugi is my favorite anime of all! I love the shojo anime and more recently I have been watching Ouran High School Host Club, it's hilarious! When you don't have the money there's always youtube...that's what I have to do to get my fix because I definately don't have hundreds of dollars to buy the whole series.

You like Ouran Host Club? Go to GUBA. They have the whole series.  And oh yeah!...it's free.  But it's in subtitles.  You don't mind, do you?

I am a late bloomer November 14, 2007 3:07 PM

The series and the movie that got me interested on Animes  was Full metal Alchemist. at first I did'nt like it because of the big metal guy.  but once I realized why he was metal i kinda got into it.  The philosopher's stone closed the deal.  I just could'nt get enough.  Envy, lust, greed, rose, hoenhyme of light, and hughs.   I think I fell for ed and Mustang.  the one character I think i was most like was hawkeye.  She was perfect for mustang.  she was very protective of him.

This all has comeabout in the just the last two years.  I am 40 years old.  Iguess i am late to the party.

rumiko style March 14, 2009 12:08 AM

i first loved anime since the Sailor Moon series and Yuyu Hakusho (Poltergeist Report/Ghost Fighter), but what really made me a complete otaku is the anime Inu-Yasha (Sengoku Jidai) by Rumiko Takahashi. Since then, I've also loved Ranma 1/2 (Nibun no Ichi), Meitantei Conan (Detective Conan), and anime titles of CLAMP! (Card Captor Sakura, Chobits, Tsubasa Reservoir Chronicles, Lelouch of the Rebellion)
