when do poodles stop growing? October 04, 2006 4:11 AM

After much anxiety, i finally had Lil spayed last week. When they weighed her I was shocked. She's 9 lbs 9 0z. She's 9 monhts old now and not at all overweight, she just keeps growing. Just two months ago, she was 7 lbs 5 oz at 7 months. When i bought her, the breeder said her mother was 6 lbs and her father was 4 so she should be around 6.  I know its impossible to tell without knowing the size of the grandparents and honestly, I can't blame the breeder because i looked at an age/size chart when I bought her and she was consistent with what she would have been at that age if she were going to grow to 6 lbs. How much more could she possibly grow? Don't get me wrong, i don't care, I love my baby. I'm just wondering how much bigger she could get.

Hi :o)

She's about the age at which her growth should slow down now.  Most dogs stop growing at about 10-12 months of age.  The larger breeds can take longer.  If she's not overweight and the vet didn't see anything else that concerned them when you got her weighed, then it's probably just an anomaly of genetics.  You can't always guess at what size the puppies will grow to based on thier parents .  It's funny like that .  Hope this helps!

Nah, nothing concerned them. I actually had the bloodwork done before they spayed her to make sure it was safe and it came back perfect.

Hi Erika - poodles usually reach their height at about 1 yr. but really are not considered fully mature until 2. Genetics in the family can really create some surprises!  When I purchased Lolli's momma in Germany I was told she would stay small, she didn't, she went almost standard!  Meralyn A.  [ send green star]

To answer your question about when they stop growing, I believe it's between 10 - 12 Months.
