Took the words right out of my mouth SCB. If you are prepared to eat one kind of meat then you should be prepared to eat any as long as they are not an endangered species, hygenic (and taste nice!).

If you are eating meat, you should also consider whether it is harvested sustainably. Unsustainable harvest doesn't necessarily put the species at risk of extinction, but it puts the harvest at risk of economic collapse and upsets the ecosystem. With farmed meat, you should also consider the other environmental, health and cruelty aspects of how the animals are raised.

Other reasons why horses should not be used for food May 07, 2005 3:24 PM
Beyond the horrific cruelty of the slaughter house are other concerns -In the United States, horses are routinely given medications and wormers, including penicillin and promazine hydrochloride, receive topical treatments such as Betadine scrub, Kopertox for hoof care, SWAT fly repellent, and many others.Commonly used medications are boldly labeled “Not To Be Used On Animals Intended For Use As Food.”Horses are not perceived and legally recognized as food animals, hence little concern is given to the administering of drugs such as the ones listed above. But since the occurrence of “mad cow” disease, Europeans and Asians have turned to eating horse as a presumably safer alternative, and buy Canadian horsemeat (which is mostly American horses exported to Canada for slaughter.)Since horses are not considered food animals here, there is no disclosure to other countries that horse meat meets the accepted standard for consumption as food.Recently, however, the EU (European Union) inspectors have expressed concern about the safety of U.S. horse meat.
Your point is well taken. I would only consider horses that are grown for meat. There is a difference between those that are being sent to the glue factory rather than the grave and animals that are grown for food.

The French would save horses before they help to save a country of people being slaughtered by their own dictator! Go figure!
Which people has control of their govt. once elected? May 08, 2005 12:02 PM
I don't see the French people as having any greater control over their government as mine has over ours. With regard to horses, some French people, and not all, no doubt, would like to see a stop being made to horses being slaughtered for meat. I'm very glad they are trying. I wish them well. The thought of cows being raised for slaughter is equally abhorrent to me as horses. In France it is acceptable to eat horses and some French people want to change that. I don't eat meat any longer so I can't get into the argument about different species. My government has been party to the slaughter of 100 000 Iraqi people or more. I had no control over it, I hate it, I did everything to stop it and I did not vote for the person who railroaded it through. I only voted at all to be one voice against him because unfortunately there is no one worth voting for in Scotland. I love all the French people I have the good fortune to know. Governments are a different matter.

Thanks for the post!! We must be vigilant and compassionate in our efforts to educate those who still think it's ok, or don't even think about whether it's ok, to torture life and destroy our environment. Money's A Dream.......Love Is Life!!!!
Eleanor and Hazel, thank you so much for your compassion and conprehension ! ScB and Jon, the point is'nt about making a difference between horses, cows, pigs and chiken. well, of course if YOU are meat eater it's your problem. Tani, thank you for signing. anyway one should not mix international politics wich as nothing to do with this subject, and your anger against french people and government has probably something to do with the propaganda campains of american mediae. I am sad of your opinion and I guess you probably don't know what you're talking about. personaly I am proud not to be part of this war, but time and history will tell us who was right on this decision, and that is another story.

I've signed the petition. ScB, you are right, if you eat meat you can't feel sorry for one species and not for the other! That's why I am a Vegan!! Cows and bulls in the states are treated equally as terrible as horses in france, or chicken in holland for example!

Sorry if I came across rather harsh in my previous post it's just that a petition to stop horses being eaten seems to be aimed at those who are only interested in protecting a "nice" animal. If it's part of a campaign to stop people eating meat then that's fine - but I think that's what it should be seen as. Equally if there are specific reasons about the way horses are reared for meat that are different from the often inhumane way non-organic meat is reared then that's fine as well but again it should be put forward in that light. To appeal to people just about horses because many people view them as nice animals that can be ridden etc. I feel weakens the argument.
Oh and Tani, when you're ready to talk politics with grown-ups then I'll be ready to talk with you.
