From a Different Perspective June 26, 2005 8:25 PM

After looking over the many companies that are mentioned in this group that may be subjected to boycotts, perhaps we should pause and reflect on whether a large company or corporation may be doing something good for society? Besides their usual rationalization that they are providing thousands of jobs. What else?

I am looking from a different perspective on this for two reasons.

One, that we have a good group here that has a potential for growth. There are many contributors in this group, but as long as we keep everything balanced we can be a mighty force to be reckon with! Most of us are activists to some degree. We may have extremists on both sides of the spectrum. I may not necessarily agree with them, but what I do believe is that they have a right to express themselves!

Even if we are boycotting various companies in hopes that they'll change their ways and correct their mistakes, most of us do not want to see a company or large corporation crash.

We should take into consideration whether a company or large corporation has done anything good for society, such as a significant contribution to various causes. Hmmm! Is something positive newsworthy to the media?

"Is something positive newsworthy to the media?"

Rarely, especially if it is corporate philanthropy. Boycotts work because the negativity helps with publcitiy, but if you want to investigate companies we should buy from please go ahead. One possible reason for the lack of focus on positivity is the level of shallow consumerism in modern society - most activists would like to see people spend less on large sections of the economy. Living simpler involves spending a lot less, earning a lot less and just enjoying earth's gifts sustainably.

I don't think providing jobs can be seen as a benefit from the company specifically, because all companies do it and there are always other comapnies who could provide the same employment and the same services without destroying the environment, torturing animals, engaging in anti competitive behaviour, or whatever else people boycott for.

Yes, positive is rarely newsworthy June 26, 2005 9:29 PM

Yes Freedriver, I do believe we are on the same wavelength there. A thought-provoking question for the media to think about and analyze. But I must agree that we rarely see and read anything positive in the media, especially concerning corporations doing anything good.

We also know that the very first factor that a corporation will point out to us all is that they provide jobs and they tend to use that their defense when we counter them with such a question as what positive contributions they made to society.

Once you really get to know me Freedriver, you will pick up on reading in-between the lines to know what I am driving at, but like an editorial blog, I did get a response, didn't I? (wink!)

Sure did. You might have to state the obvious occasionally when I fail to read between the lines - I have found that can often backfire in an online forum.  [ send green star]

You'd be surprised how often that happens. And I obviously don't even notice a lot of them.  [ send green star]
