The idea of a 'worst of' list was floated when this group first began. The are currently four 'worst of' categories - see the group billboard. I chose these myself, but you can open up a vote on any of them at any time, or suggest new categories. I would like to add a fifth - food companies. I would have added this myself but I couldn't see any one company that stood out. Voting is open already, but you can nominate more companies at any time. The poll will not have an official end date. I will just update the 'winner' on the billboard as necessary. You can change your vote at any time too.
Vote counting will be based on Instant Runoff Voting. Please rank all companies from worst to 'least deserving of a boycott.' You can leave out companies you know nothing about.
Nominations are only open for companies that sell food for human consumption (ie not food types or pet food). Start a separate thread for bagging the company and post a link here, but check if a thread already exists for the company before starting a new one. This thread is only for voting related stuff.
I think we need to look at the entire food chain and work to get back to the local produced food. Organic has lost most of its meaning due to watering down by USDA. The clonning and plant propergation patterns that the large producers of crops are doing now will end up with a tragic mess. The companies most people have named are at the end of the food chain. We need to get at the start where things are grown and help the farmer get it to us in a way that we can afford and he can afford to live too.

Vote on Worst food company January 02, 2007 6:09 AM
I have just now come across this thread and if we are still taking votes, here is mine.
McDonalds
Coca-Cola
KFC
Nestle
The are the only companies I have experience with and I boycott them and all their products. If and when we come up with a concensus and the top worst three pehaps we can start a thread listing all the holdings of the top three.
Well, its not their focus. However, whenever the topic of "bad" companies comes up, MallWart is the firt thing that comes to my mind...

The extra large Super Wal-Marts always have groceries and their membership division, Sam's Club always has food.

I agree with scb as my main concern is where the foods originate. So my vote for worst food company would be Monsanto.
Around 70% of all GMO crops come from Monsanto technology, they own about a dozen subsidiary companies supplying a variety of GMO seeds. They produce the Roundup ready GMO seed line for corn, soybeans and cotton as well as Roundup herbicide. They produce PCB's, Agent Orange and the notorious rBGH (recombinant Bovine Growth Hormone).
Something like 80% of all processed foods containing corn, soybeans or wheat (including corn oil, high fructose corn syrup, soybean oil, etc.) are from GMO crops and that includes almost all soda and juice flavored drinks that contain high fructose corn syrup.
A Monsanto subsidiary, Agracetus, is developing GMO pharmaceutical crops.
Unless you're eating ALL organic foods and never eat at a restaurant, chances are that a good portion of the foods you eat originate in some fashion with Monsanto's GMO frankenfoods.
Purchase bio-regionally and support your local farmer.
As far as the list of nominees go, I'd have to vote for McDonalds as the worst food company with KFC a close second barely nosing out Coca-Cola. That's my win-place-show trifecta.
