Hello everyone July 10, 2005 11:48 PM
I have only ever seen a Manatee on film but they are obviously such gentle and vulnerable creatures. I am happy to be invited to join this group and I hope to make some new friends here.
This is a wonderful group to be in, thanks again for asking me to join. I live in central Florida and have seen these beautiful manatee swiming along many times. It's great to know that there are people out there that are willing to stand-up for animal rights. The manatees are such gentle giants we all need to watch out for them and be their voice.
Thanks for the invite!!! I live in Jacksonville, Florida for about 14 years now. Raised in Orlando for over 20 and guess what, I have yet to see one of these beautiful creatures. But then again I am not much of a water person LOL.
I am disabled so I can't do much other than sign the petitions and send the letters and bombard the politicians with emails and faxes!! I'll do what I can to help.
Oops guess I forgot to introduce myself. Thanks for the invite.I’ve been interested in manatees ever since I went to college in St Petersburg, FL, um, well, let’s just call it several years ago.Every once in a while, one would swim down the canal near my dorm. They always seemed so peaceful, it was terrible to see the scars on their backs from motor boat propellers.
Hey there! I'm Brenda. 30 years old. Live near the water, but unfortunately all I see are yachts and speedboats! We adopted a manatee when I was in high school, and it was such an awesome experience learning about these adorable creatures!

Roxane, your invitation couldn't have come at a better time! I'm going to Florida this Saturday. I'll be staying at Amelia By the Sea for a week.

Thanks for the invitation Roxane. I live in FL and I've even gone swimming with the Manatee in the Santa Fe river so of course I'd like to join.

I'm Sassy, from Texas. I love the Manatee. 2 or 3 nights a week my children and I will look for new info about the Manatee- online, books, magazine articles and such. Then we share our info. Helps all of us become more aware and care about our enviroment a lil bit more everyday. Anyone have any sites they would like to share with us???

Hi, I'm new too. Thanks for the invite, Mike N! I don't know much about manatees -- I live in IL and we don't have them in Lake Michigan -- but I look forward to learning from the rest of you.

How exciting! So many people working together for manatees. I have also gotten to swim near them, but luckily, these were still pretty afraid of people and they took off rather quickly. I'm not saying I'm an expert, but I know a pretty good amount about these lovely animals and would be glad to share info with anyone who wants to listen. (Teacher here, can you tell?)

Thanks for the invite hi my name is Jean (the French version of John) I love these beautiful creature hope to have them around for lots of century.

I am assuming sailing is a lot more friendly to sierneians than speed boats. I have never seen any but I am getting my boat to georgia pretty soon.

I'm from Northeast Brasil & we have a manatee sanctuary there (in Recife). It's fascinating to learn from the workers that they have to change, frequently, people in charge of cleaning the tanks & feeding the manatees, because the animals get attached to them, & actually get deppressed (won't eat, keep staring out of the tanks' glass windows, etc...) if they have a day off, leave the refuge, etc... The manatees actually follow them around like puppies, trying to "touch" them.
What amazingly "human" sentiments and gentle souls...it's incredibly touching to me.

Thanks for the invitation, girls! I see you're working hard already and I have signed all petitions! What a team! Really, I feel that manatees should be protected! They have a good disposition and are part of the Animal World we should take better care of.
Thank you for inviting me Roxanne August 01, 2005 5:04 AM
Hello everyone! My name is Yvonne and I am an active Care2 member.
I live in Texas with my husband and 2 boys. I am also a stay at home mother. We tend to go to swim school, gymboree and now soccer practice. I also plan to look into the boy scouts for my 6yr old. We are in the process of buying a house and this is a very exciting time for us. I plan to incoprorate the "Green Remodeling," book into our home.
I love the outdoors, beach and any kind of nature. In our spare time we go to the movies, dance, kareoke, and play Texas hold em.
My hobbies are scrapbooking, photography and making jewelry. I also have a website of my stuff if anyone would like to check it out:
Sorry I'm late with the introduction. I'm Joy from FL (recently relocated from MD 2.5 yrs ago). I'm an active Click-A-Day member & I try to keep up with reading my group boards on a semi-regular basis. I also adopted Whiskers from the Save the Manatee group over 2 years ago (right there with you Terri from AZ!) & love going up to Blue Spring to see the manatees annually.
Thank you Roxanne for doing just a good job with keeping the rest of us posted on all the Manatee news.
Thank you for the invite! I love manatees!

Hello August 06, 2005 12:58 PM
Hello Everyone!!
Thanks for inviting me Roxanne! My name is Kimberly Matthiensen. Yes, I am the one who sold Spud the potato on ebay. LOL!! It was a huge & wonderful experience!! I am very sorry for not joining the group sooner, it has been a very busy couple of weeks!
I live in Hampton, Virginia (my hubby is in the Navy - active duty)but am originally from Florida. Most of my family lives there.
I love manatees and always have. I am willing to find any way to help these gently creatures.
I am a huge manatee fan and activist. My husband, daughter, and I go to Florida every year to try to visit the manatee, Dana, that we adopt every year. I have done some volunteer work for Save the Manatee Club.
Here's a picture of my daughter Mia and I on one of our trips to Florida to see manatees.
I have a soft spot for manatees because they are such gentle creatures and they can be saved if enough people take action to educate others about their plight, educate boaters about the need to slow down in areas where manatees hang out, and to prevent them from being removed from Endangered Species Act protections prematurely.
I am thrilled to find a group of people willing to help ensure that manatees will not go the way of the Dodo bird.
Hi! Thanks for the invite, Harmonia... ^.^ I love manatees... I've been planning on adopting one all my life, I think I finaly might someday soon... ^.^
I am new to the group also. I love manatees & shar-peis. Perhaps because they both have cute little faces. I adopted a rescued shar-pei after we lost ours to kidney failure. www.sharpaisavers.com (sorry for the ad) I went swimming with the manatees also in Crystal River, FL. in April 2004. It was a great time but learned afterwards that you really shouldn't swim with wild manatees-sorry manatees! I would like to "adopt" a manatee. So any suggestions on how to do this or which one is best with the most proceeds going to the animals welfare? I would love to work with manatees but that would involve a major upheavel for my family & pets & that is not in the cards for now. But I do sign petitions & do what I can from WI.
Hi everyone, when I lived in Florida I lived by a state park called manatee springs. I lived about 7 miles from there and used to ride my bike there to go swimming. I was about 9 then now, I go visit there every time I go back to Florida. Its beautiful!!!!! I got to see manatees in the wild swimming peacefully!!!!

Hello, I am Rafael Ernesto from Puerto Rico. Glad to participate on this group, and hope soon I can do more than signing letters and clicking. I am remanaging my time with work
My name is Danielle -- I'm new to this group but NOT new to loving manatees! Actually, when I was 5 I went shopping with my mom for a birthday gift for my little sister at a "play with nature" store. Living in California, I didn't know what a manatee was but I found a stuffed animal manatee and became interested in them. I did my first research report on manatees and joined save the manatee club at age 7 with my first adopted manatee. I've been an active member (well, as active as possible) ever since then and I still pick manatees as my favorite animal BY FAR!
In addition to collecting manatee stuff (I have over 40 manatee stuffed animals alone), I love to hear stories about people's own experiences. I've been to Florida several times and had the opprotunity to swim with manatees (very carefully following all the rules using a non motorized boat) once.
Thank you do much for the invite to join this group. My name is Marilyn and I am a Manatee Watch/Research Volunteer from Dixie County FL. I am also a proud member of Save The Manatee Club and do all I can to support the survival of our gentle giants.
Soon wintering season will be here and I can once again take my place on the banks of the Suwannee River to watch for my manatee friends to return to the springs at Manatee Springs and Fanning Springs. Such a thrill to be able to see them up close and in their natural habitat.
I have a website dedicated to the manatees at http://www.manateefriend.com. Some of the links are dead and we are working to get them removed and new ones added. Any suggestions for the website will be gladly accepted.
Thanks to the moderators for this wonderful list and I certainly look forward to making lots of new Manatee friends and learning and contributing to the information.
Hi there from Singapore... September 11, 2005 4:31 AM
Hi all,
Thanks to Roxanne I joined this group on Care2. I am German, living in Singapore since about 7 years.
We have Dugongs here in Singapore Underwater World - but I have never seen any in their natural environment. I actively support National Geographics and am especially interested in oceans and their creatures. Am a PADI scuba diving instructor and try to contribute as such to environmental awareness.
Please let me know how I can support from Asia. Hope to meet lots of new friend and "soulmates" on this page.
Hi Everyone.. we lived for two years in Tarpon Springs Florida...I fell in love with Manatees right away ,when I saw the first nose sticking out the water...took many many pictures from a small pier..my husband and had 8 MRRP Bins to collect fishing line sponsored by the Fish and wildlife and the Ocean conservancy..please take a look and add some pictures..i would be so happy... Agnes
Thank you Roxanne for inviting me to join this group.
My profile states that my pet: Manatee. The reason: the back of my house is a manatee sanctuary. Right now, they are vacationing elsewhere...the gators are in residence.
When the Manatees return, I will have to photgraph them sunning themselves and post it on this site. It is so cool to see!
Danielle: about living by the manatee's home..it is very interesting. Also, particularly on Sunday afternoons, going to 'visit' with them is so calming. I do not know why.
Yesterday, a Sunday, we saw an alligator, floating on top of the water. Also interesting, but definitely not calming, like the manatees!
Hi and thank you Roxanne November 12, 2005 6:03 PM
I know tha I've been unable to do anythuiing as far as PC things go for almost 3 weeks now, but I just saw this invite and was so suroprised to have not known about this until now. Hurricane Wilma crippled so much of Miami and Broward county as well. Moving on, I can't change what has happened, I've been arguing with so many agencies as well as the officials here. Manatees used to have a better chance of survival years ago, even though so many still got away with it. What good is it to have seen so many posted signs saying "Manatee crossing" reduce your speed!?? When it wasn't really ever enforced unless a coast guard boat was near by when it occured!!! The Fl. water life rules are not applicable to most boaters, and they really don't give a damn. Sad but true. I've even got into some unhappy disputes with other botaers to no avail. I've even e-mailed local officials. All I ever get is a pre-printed baloney letter saying that this is being looked into. All the mammals as well as the overfishing, and beautiful ocean's floors are being destroyed at a rapid rate. The oceans are mostly disgusting. All I can do is try to make as many boaters aware of the damage. I think they don't care about any one's opinion. All I can do is keep trying to tactfully explain how important they are, especially to the state of Fla. Here's hoping for the best. Been to Key West lately? It's gone so very down hill! Italia

Hi everyone! I also am a lover of these gentle giants. I was also originally moving to Florida, the Punta Gorda area in the summer of 2002 & there was much information around regarding the Manatees. I was surprised still at the speed w/which people would drive their motorboats. It's against teh law as far as I know but not enough enforcement.
You can check out my information about me by clicking on me.
Priviledge and Delight ! December 03, 2005 10:40 PM
Thanks for this group! Theres a lovely young lady up there named Danielle who has her own Manatee named Dana!
Shes a friend of a friend of mine!
So I wanted (something told me) to look over there and choose an icon friends of friends, I mulled it over, because they mutate like ya know you don't know if you'll see the same one on the way back, and low & behold! Lovely Danielle has the most breathtaking photos of a manatee I've ever seen! I love these animals, I've dreamed about them and never forgotten those dreams. Danielle's, photo of a little yellow cat , was the sinker for me (something very spiritual about yellow to me) and I can say WOW an actual marine angel! What a priviledge and a delight to be part of something so careing! I love CARE2 !!!
I'd encourage ANYONE who hasn't looked into "adopting" a manatee yet to do so, it's fun-- especially for those outside of FL who don't get to see manatees regularly

Part of me wants to be a wildlife biologist, but I really want to be a marine biologist. I know there is more lab work than field work, though. I'm not sure what a conservationist would do. Anyways, I hope I get to help manatees.

This is going to sound so pedestrian but it's true....The first time I ever saw a manatee was in a huge tank at the Florida Epcot Center's Living Seas Pavillion. I was so entranced by them and saddened by their plight. Now, years later , through the wonders of the Internet , I've joined the Save the Manatee Club and have gone so far as to adopt a manatee. This is Jemp, a red tide survivor :
...which reminds me....Would anyone know how to put up the banner link to adopt from that site onto your personal profile? I tried but it wouldn't go.
when Archie shared your link I already had a blog with petition and then I then made another as I got interest in first blog of the Manatee
My (now deceased), husband's family lived in Florida and some still have their summer places there! I am glad ones have taken an interest in the Manatee's welfare here at Care2. Yes, I am new here at Care2 and have met some very wonderful new caring friends!

Hello all. I live in South Florida and have had the pleasure of seeing these gentle giants many times, as well as seeing the perils they face. I am glad to be here amoungst friends.

Living in Fl. is such a joy when we can observe these beauties. I lived 3 mi. from Manatee Springs and enjoyed sitting on the river waiting to get a glimpse. I'm hoping the laws can get more specific for their protection from motor boats. It seems there are still too many deaths to ignore this situation.
