This woman is unjustly imprisoned in the state of Maryland--Maryland Correctional Institution for Women at Jessup. She was charged and convicted of a crime committed by someone else. The highest court in the state of Maryland, on apppeal, opined in their majority opinion that there is nothing to connect Newman to the crime.
Newman was subsequently re-arrested, recharged and reconvicted by the State's Attorney of Montgomery County, Maryland, who, just "coincidentally" happened to be planning a run for state office. I suspect he could not allow Newman--although she was innocent--to be released; the release of an innocent woman, convicted on his watch, would not look good on his record. [Yes...his run for office succeeded; Doug Gansler is now the Attorney General of Maryland.] He preferred to convict the innocent, rather than let the mess stain his record and keep him from higher office.
The trial was even moved to a different county, where-- according to Gansler's chief assistant, Katherine Winfree--there was a higher chance of conviction. Yup! You read that right. I have in hand a copy of an email from Winfree to one of the police detectives with whom she worked, stating that the percentage of chance of conviction went way up when the second trial was moved to Fredrick County [a county rather rudely referred to by Gansler as "Fredneck County].
I don't know what else to say. I have been reading about this case, researching it and talking and writing to people involved for over a year now. I am convinced that Elsa Newman is innocent and that her children are in the hands of a sexual predator who molests and abuses them.
Her release would allow her to work freely for the welfare of her children.
Thank you...any and all of you who are inclined to add your signature to this petition.
In addition, when Newman was convicted, her two young sons, who had disclosed severe molestation and abuse by their father, Arlen Slobodow of Tampa, Florida, were left by default in the hands of their abuser. The question of abuse was never heard in court, because the criminal trial intervened, and abuse and molestation somehow became moot questions.
Would the AG of Maryland actually permit such injustice on his watch? You bet he would! Ambition within a man like Doug Gansler knows no limits. Rumor has it that he plans a run for Governor at his next opportunity--and eventually a run for President of the US, perhaps as early as 2016.
As further evidence of the man's attitude, please notice that he insisted--also at the time of his run for AG--that he be allowed to retry the DC snipers in Maryland, although they had already been convicted in Virginia.
More? When he heard that the appeals court had reversed the Newman decision, he went on record saying, "They just released the woman who wanted to kill her kids." What happened to the search for truth? According to the dictates of his office as state's attorney, Gansler should have been pursuing reality, truth and justice, rather than bad-mouthing the court that freed this innocent mother.

For over four decades, Indigenous communities have witnessed multinational oil companies cut through their ancestral lands in search of the country's vast petroleum resources. Petition to Iran to release Esha Momeni October 24, 2008 8:56 AM
We, the undersigned, have heard with great alarm of the arrest in Tehran, on Wednesday October 15, 2008, of Esha Momeni, a graduate student in film and communication at California State University, Northridge. This arrest was made by Tehran traffic police on the pretext that she had made an illegal turn, but we have since been informed that she has been transferred to Section 209 of Evin Prison and kept in solitary confinement.
We wish to make clear that at no time has Ms. Momeni been involved in any activities contravening the laws of the Islamic Republic of Iran. She had returned to Iran for an extended visit mainly for the purpose of seeing family and friends, and also in order to carry out research related to her MA degree at California State University, Northridge. Ms. Momeni, a womens rights defender and a volunteer of the California branch of a grassroots campaign called the "One Million Signatures Demanding Changes to Discriminatory Laws", decided to make her Masters thesis project a personal exploration of the shared experiences of everyday Iranians. This included interviews with some members of the Campaign. The activities of the Campaign are peaceful and merely aimed at reforming the Iranian laws in areas that discriminate against women; the Campaign has no political objectives.
Those who are privileged to know Ms. Momeni are fully aware of the sincerity and passion for justice which she brings to the promotion of a truer image of Iran outside the country, and we are therefore dismayed that she should have been arrested and detained despite not having engaged in any unlawful activities. We, the undersigned, therefore demand Ms. Momeni be released immediately and without conditions so that she can return to complete her education. In addition we urge you to: 1.Guarantee in all circumstances the physical and psychological integrity of Ms. Esha Momeni; 2.Assure that while in detention she is granted immediate and regular access to her family, a lawyer of her choice, and any medical treatment necessary in light of her medical condition (kidney stones); 3 Ensure in all circumstances respect for human rights and fundamental freedoms in accordance with the Universal Declaration of Human Rights and with international and regional human rights instruments ratified by Iran.
Petition to protest the unlawful detention October 22, 2008 11:45 AM
The proposed POSCO steel plant in Orissa displaces a thriving agricultural community and has been sanctioned amidst serious environmental violations. People have barricaded their villages. The state has been responding with force with armed battalions taking over schools in the region. AID had hosted a petition in Feb 2008 against this forced displacement asking the state to listen to its people. AID volunteers had submitted the signatures to the Indian Consulate in San Francisco and faxed them to the Chief MInister of Orissa and Prime Minister of India.
The State of Orissa has been continuing in a belligerent fashion to quell the resistance of its people. It has been foisting false charges against the movement and its leaders. Last week, they arrested Abhay Sahoo, the President of the POSCO Pratirodha Sangaram Samiti.[PPSS] on fabricated charges and he has been remanded to 15 days custody. PPSS is one of the strongest pro-people voices against this project. We are hosting this petition to protest the dentention of Mr. Sahoo and urge the Chief Minister of Orissa Mr. Patnaik to not only release Mr. Sahoo and other leaders but also to respect the democratic rights of the people irrespective of their position on the project.
Here is a link to the petition. Kindly circulate it widely.
For those who are intersted in knowing what is happening to the POSCO project, this blog is updated frequently with happenings, news material http://stoposco.wordpress.com/
Online Petition: SUPPORT Sean Bell Arrestees! October 07, 2008 4:38 PM
SUPPORT - Sean Bell Arrestees
Send a message of NOT Guilty to Judge Larry Stephen Act NOW!
Your message will also go to the media so that they cannot ignore continued police violence in NYC.
Click the link below to send a message directly to presiding Judge Larry Stephen, Mayor Bloomberg, Gov Paterson, Senators Clinton and Schumer, the New York State Legislature, and members of the media! http://www.iacenter.org/seanbellarresteespetition
Sentencing is 2:15pm - Wed, Oct 8, 2008 100 Center Street, 4th Floor, Jury 2 & C, If you are in NYC make every effort to attend the sentencing.
Call for a Not Guilty verdict
It is outrageous that the police who killed Sean Bell with 50 bullets on Nov 25, 2006 - the morning of his wedding and wounded Trent Benafield and Joseph Guzman can be found Not Guilty of any charge in NYC Criminal Courts. Yet those who responded to the verdict in wholly justified protests may be found Guilty.
It is a crime that the NYC District Attorneys office has continued with this outrageous prosecution.
The arrestees do not deny that they took part in the May 7 well organized, orderly and cohesive civil disobedience protests to raise an urgent life and death issue. This is an issue of deep concern to millions of people nationally who are outraged at unrestrained, unpunished, continuing police violence.
A Not Guilty verdict is the only acceptable ending to these charges on civil rights activists.
Many hundreds of people blocked evening rush hour traffic at bridges and tunnels including the Triboro, Brooklyn, Queensboro and Manhattan Bridges and the Holland and Midtown Tunnels. Many Thousands of others surrounded them, supporting their justified action
The organized protest followed the outrageous Not Guilty verdict for the police who killed Sean Bell. Anger was enormous at the unchecked racist police violence in Black and Latino communities of NYC.
More than 250 people were arrested at the May 7 protest. Charges were quickly dropped on the overwhelming majority of arrestees.
However for 7 participants facing sentencing on Wednesday, October 8th , charges were not dropped. Those facing sentencing include Rev Al Sharpton - a key organizer of the May 7th civil disobedience action - and a handful of others who have participated in civil disobedience actions in the past. Once charged, these defendants refused to plead guilty to any charges stemming from their justified protests while police who commit murder with 50 bullets are found not guilty.
International Action Center activists took part in the Civil Disobedience mass actions at several locations in Manhattan and Sara Flounders, Co-Director of the International Action Center is also one of the defendants due to be sentenced on Wednesday afternoon.
The other defendants are: Anthony Estes, formerly a victim of a brutal police attack, James Patnaude, Donna Gould, Manijeh Saba and Felton Davis.
At their trial of October 6th Attorneys Michael Hardy and Wylie Stecklow attempted to raise an important political defense of justified necessity. The actions against continuing police killings were justified and necessary. In summary: the participants acted because there were no adequate legal means to avoid this harm, and they acted to avoid grave harm not of their own making and to avert an impending danger of more police killings.
Judge Larry Stephen, formerly of the NYC District Attorney office, refused to allow this defense of justified necessity to be introduced. He limited the testimony to police descriptions of the street arrests.

Tibetans are in the midst of the most intense crackdown by Chinese authorities in decades and attacks on Tibetans are likely to increase in the coming months as the Olympic spotlight fades.
Send a letter to Chinese President Hu Jintao calling for an end to the crackdown and for the immediate opening of Tibet to foreign media and international observers. Show China's leadership that Tibet is an issue of global significance and even after the Olympics, the world is still watching. Tell me more
In August 2005, Hurricane Katrina hit the Gulf Coast and caused widespread devastation. The United States government was not prepared to respond to the magnitude of this disaster and Gulf Coast residents were forced to flee their homes. International human rights standards, including the UN Guiding Principles on Internal Displacement, guarantee the rights of every person displaced by a disaster like Hurricane Katrina, including the right to return. Amnesty International USA calls upon the federal government to uphold the right of all Katrina survivors to return to their homes. We urge officials to provide access to affordable, safe and habitable housing so that survivors can exercise their right to return.
Survivors should be able to genuinely and effectively participate in their return, resettlement and reintegration into their communities. The U.S. government must ensure that the principles of equality and non-discrimination are applied to the return or resettlement of all internally displaced persons.
A Human Rights Watch Alert I recieved in my email today- sending it along: Demand that Dangerously Ill Cuban Activist Receive Proper Medical Care
When imprisoned Cuban independent journalist Normando Hernandez Gonzalez was sent to the Carlos J. Finlay Military Hospital in Havana on September 14, 2007, we hoped it was a step towards his release. Instead, on May 7 he was returned to an isolation cell in the Kilo 7 Prison. His medical treatment for several diseases has reportedly been stopped and access by his family has been restricted.
The denial of medical treatment to Hernandez Gonzalez, a member of the Grupo de 75 who has been in prison since 2003, appears to be part of a larger response by the Cuban government to disrupt and discredit the human rights community on the island. Other human rights defenders such as the Damas de Blanco have been victims of recent smear campaigns.
Demand that the Cuban authorities immediately and unconditionally release Normando Hernandez Gonzalez and provide him with adequate medical treatment as long as he remains in detention. Cuba must also respect the right of peaceful human rights defenders to express their beliefs and promote universally-recognized rights.

Open Letter to International Community:
The signers of this document want to let the world know that self-named Fuerzas Armadas Revolucionarias de Colombia (Revolutionary Armed Forces of Colombia) – FARC, in more than 40 years of terrorism:
• Have killed tens of thousands of Colombian citizens. • Have off-trial executed hundreds of Colombian citizens. • Have kidnapped thousands of Colombian citizens. • Have attacked tens of towns in our country. • Have performed tens of terrorist attacks to civilian targets. • Have used high-power explosives to kill Colombian citizens in indiscriminate attacks. • Have dynamited our oil pipelines. • Have attacked national energy and roads infrastructure. • Have planted thousands of anti-personnel landmines in rural areas of our country. • Have used chemical substances such as ammonium nitrate to increase damage caused by it’s bombs. • Have recruited hundreds of children for combat. • Have attacked medical facilities, medical personnel and ambulances. • Have produced displacement of more than 2 million of Colombians. • Keep currently more than 700 kidnapped people, which they torture in Colombian forests. • Have destroyed more than 98.000 acres of forest to seed coca and produce cocaine. • Have trafficked hundreds of tons of cocaine.

Up to 17 men remain in detention after being arrested at a private party in Esfahan province, central Iran on May 10. They may have been tortured or ill-treated and remain at risk of such abuse.
The men were among 87 people reportedly arrested at the party. Those still detained are believed to have been wearing clothes generally associated with women at the time of their arrest.
Darfur: Join our efforts by taking action today April 10, 2007 1:46 PM
Thousands of Amnesty supporters this week will send messages, place calls and pay visits to Congress to tell their elected officials that they must do everything in their power to help get UN peacekeepers into Darfur. Join our efforts by taking action today.
Amnesty supporters and their allies have scored key victories in getting U.S. officials to promote peace and security in Darfur. During our last nationwide mobilization, supporters succeeded in getting 174 members of the House of Representatives and all 100 US Senators to sign onto a letter urging the Arab League to persuade the government of Sudan to allow UN peacekeepers into the Darfur region.
Now we need your help to put pressure on the Chinese government, which can use its influence to get Sudan to allow UN peacekeepers into Darfur. Urge your Members of Congress to tell China, as one of the Sudan’s most important economic partners, that it must act now to promote peace and security in Darfur.
China might do the right thing, but Amnesty activists need to take the lead in pressuring China to do so. Send a message today.
Sincerely,
Scott Edwards Country Specialist for Sudan Amnesty International USA
Petition to US Senate Against Cluster Bombs March 30, 2007 12:45 PM
Modern weapons in general create horrifying experiences for
civilians caught in the line of fire. But some weapons continue to kill and
maim innocent people for months or years after the conflict has ended. Cluster
bombs, which release thousands of bomblets over a large area, are one such
weapon. Due to high “dud” rates, many bomblets sit unexploded near homes,
playgrounds, and farms until someone triggers their deadly blast.
Senator Diane Feinstein has introduced legislation to restrict
the use and sale of cluster bombs. We plan to deliver this petition next week. Can you add your name and help spread the word?
Indigo S. URGENT PETITION ! 3 DAYS TO STOP GLOBAL WARMING !!! 9:06 PM
Dear friend,
On Thursday March 15th, the environment ministers from the G8, the world's biggest contributors to climate change, will be meeting in Germany. The outcome of this meeting will play a critical role in determining the world's response to global warming--and the fate of the planet.
AVAAZ has been invited to attend this meeting to present our climate change petition. Help seize this opportunity to shape the G8's agenda by signing the petition here:
The G8 is a summit of world leaders from the "Group of 8" largest economies. Together, these countries account for 50% of global greenhouse gas emissions--the gasses that cause climate change. The full G8 summit is coming in June, but the agenda and outcome of this type of high-profile event is usually set far in advance--at meetings like this one of the Environment Ministers.
This year, the president of the G8 is German Chancellor Angela Merkel. Her environment minister, Sigmar Gabriel, is in charge of the ministers meetings from March 15th-17th. And at 4 pm on Thursday the 15th, we have a personal meeting with Mr. Gabriel to present our petition for binding emissions targets to stop catastrophic climate change.
Mrs. Merkel has indicated an interest in making climate change a top priority. With a significant global petition, we can make the case that the world is ready for aggressive leadership on climate change--and pave the way for truly historic commitments at the G8 summit this June.
It's a rare opportunity to have a global impact. Add your voice to the petition now:
50,000 people from 131 countries have already demanded action. Our goal is to reach 100,000. Please sign the petition, forward this email to friends and family, and post the link on your blog--we only have a few days to make this statement count.
If we add our voices together, now, 2007 can become the year we took the first step to save the world.
With hope,
Ricken, David, Iain, Lee-Sean, Galit, Graziela, and the whole AVAAZ team

Okay my girls, this is my final plea for Lolita. I want to send out the alert one more time, and I need it to sink into people's brains. In other words, I need your input, what would you change, add, re-do? Please let me know, I can't stand thinking of her there anymore. Every ten minutes there's a stupid commercial for the Seaquarium on TV, of course they show the poor Orca splashing the people in her tiny pool. Oh my God, just writing this I am about to puke. Will you please take a look and send me your ideas? I thank you from the bottom of my heart, I couldn't go to sleep without sending this out first! Love you! Ceci Message: In a New Year we can accomplish our goals...Hello my friends!

I am sending this out begging for your help once again, asking that if you haven't signed please do, and please send it on to your entire network, and ask them to do the same. This situation is not only sad, but it is dire to get Lolita out of the outdated and illegal tub she lives in to a more comfortable retirement. PLEASE, don't let greed and selfishness win out by letting more time pass thus ensuring her death in that puddle. Lead is one of the most harmful toxins on Earth and is especially hazardous for children.
Incredibly, the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) is considering removing lead entirely from the list of pollutants it controls under the Clean Air Act.
Exposure to leads can pose high risks to humans. Lead poisoning damages the major organs and causes osteoporosis, high blood pressure, heart disease, anemia, memory problems and seizures. Children are at the greatest risk with lead poisoning, as low levels of lead can cause lowered IQ levels and learning deficits.
Please act now to ensure that your health isn't threatened. Tell the EPA that it must continue to use the best available science to protect the air we breathe from dangerous lead pollution.
International Petition - Jewish Voice for Peace December 01, 2006 1:31 PM
What YOU can do! 10:23 AM
The people of Gaza desperately need your help. And they need it now.
Israeli human rights groups have asked each and every one of us to help them focus international attention on the deteriorating human rights crisis in Gaza. A month of actions will culminate on December 2 with almost 100 demonstrations across the world. Just the threat of international protests helped pressure Israel to call a cease-fire last week, but the siege continues.
1. Sign the international petition now. Israeli groups will present your signature, along with thousands of others, to Israeli officials next week.
2. Join a local demonstration on December 2 near you. JVP chapters are sponsoring activities in many US cities.
3. Contact Congress and tell them to suspend US military aid to Israel until they end the siege.
Peace,
All of us at Jewish Voice for Peace
PS Please go here to spread the word. This is a very critical time.
PETITION Release CDN's/ChristianPeaceWorkers IRAQ December 03, 2005 11:46 AM
An Urgent Appeal: Please Release Our Friends in Iraq
Four members of Christian Peacemaker Teams were taken this past Saturday, November 26, in Baghdad, Iraq. They are not spies, nor do they work in the service of any government. They are people who have dedicated their lives to fighting against war and have clearly and publicly opposed the invasion and occupation of Iraq. They are people of faith, but they are not missionaries. They have deep respect for the Islamic faith and for the right of Iraqis to self-determination.
C.P.T. first came to Iraq in October 2002 to oppose the US invasion, and it has remained in the country throughout the occupation in solidarity with the Iraqi people. The group has been invaluable in alerting the world to many of the horrors facing Iraqis detained in US-run prisons and detention centers. C.P.T. was among the first to document the torture occurring at the Abu Ghraib prison, long before the story broke in the mainstream press. Its members have spent countless hours interviewing Iraqis about abuse and torture suffered at the hands of US forces and have disseminated this information internationally.
Each of the four C.P.T. members being held in Iraq has dedicated his life to resisting the darkness and misery of war and occupation. Convinced that it is not enough to oppose the war from the safety of their homes, they made the difficult decision to go to Iraq, knowing that the climate of mistrust created by foreign occupation meant that they could be mistaken for spies or missionaries. They went there with a simple purpose: to bear witness to injustice and to embody a different kind of relationship between cultures and faiths. Members of C.P.T. willingly undertook the risks of living among Iraqis, in a common neighborhood outside of the infamous Green Zone. They sought no protection from weapons or armed guards, trusting in, and benefiting from, the goodwill of the Iraqi people. Acts of kindness and hospitality from Iraqis were innumerable and ensured the C.P.T. members’ safety and wellbeing. We believe that spirit will prevail in the current situation.
We appeal to those holding these activists to release them unharmed so that they may continue their vital work as witnesses and peacemakers.
CPT is aware of a second video tape that makes reference to demands and a specific timeline for those demands to be met. We are investigating this situation.
"We are distressed that those who have taken our friends, Harmeet, Tom, Norman and Jim, could try and bargain with their lives and we want to understand why they would do such a thing. The taking of lives in any circumstance is against every thing we stand for. Please, whoever is holding them, release them all unharmed. Their families are very worried about them and we want their safe return home. We fear that whoever is holding them has made a mistake. These four men are peacemakers, not spies. CPT has consistently opposed the war and the continuing presence of multinational forces in Iraq."
Save worker-owned Bauen Hotel in Argentina November 18, 2005 8:14 PM
Dear Friends,
The movements of worker-run businesses in Latin America are growing, creating dignified democratic jobs in the rubble of neoliberalism¹s ruinous experiments on that continent.
In Caracas recently, the first pan-Latin meeting of recovered companies was a tremendous success, with 600 workers from 263 companies in eight countries taking the first steps to build an alternative trading network that will deepen and broaden the power of these new social movements.
We are writing you today to ask you to help save one of the most important sites in this emerging network: the Bauen Hotel in Buenos Aires.
The Bauen is a five star hotel that was abandoned to bankruptcy by its owners, and has been recovered and is now operated by a cooperative of its workers. It is also the informal living room/meeting place of the movement in Argentina, and as such has been targeted by right wing politicians in the city legislature of Buenos Aires for eviction.
The hotel is now on emergency footing, with eviction possible within days.
Naomi Klein, Arundhati Roy, Michael Hardt, Antonio Negri, Michael Albert, and Avi Lewis have already signed.
You can also send emails to President Nestor Kirchner at privada@presidencia.gov.ar
and Anibal Fernandez, the Minister of the Interior at: anibalfernandez@infovia.com.ar.
Below is a sample email in Spanish and English.
Please forward widely and help Save the Bauen Hotel!
Many thanks, The International Support Campaign for the Workers of the Bauen Hotel

Señor Presidente Néstor Kirchner (o Señor Ministro del Interior Aníbal Fernandez),

Saluda atentamente, Tu nombre

Alito for Supreme Court? 108% of goal! -- Keep signing! November 01, 2005 10:50 AM
Sharon T. Urgent! Stop Alito from Supreme Court! 125K signs needed immediately! Monday, 7:44 PM
Hi, I just got this from MoveOn.org...Please sign! Thank you!!!
Today President Bush caved to pressure from the far right and nominated the notoriously radical judge Samuel Alito to the Supreme Court. Today we're joining the campaign to stop him by aiming to collect 250,000 signatures in 48 hours. Can you sign today?
Dear MoveOn member,
This morning, with his administration growing weaker by the day, President Bush caved to pressure from the radical fringe of the Republican Party and nominated Samuel Alito to replace Sandra Day O'Connor on the Supreme Court. Alito is a notoriously right-wing judge on the Third Circuit Court of Appeals. He has consistently ruled to strip basic protections from workers, women, minorities and the disabled in favor of unchecked power for corporations and special interests.
That's why today we're joining the fight with an emergency petition to the Senate, calling on them to stand up for ordinary Americans and reject Alito's nomination. We're aiming to gather a quarter million signatures and comments in the next 48 hours.
Bush's ploy to woo the far-right could reshape the High Court for decades to come—but we don't have to let that happen. The president's rock-bottom approval ratings and the scandals engulfing virtually every Republican leader have broken the spell of the right-wing spin machine. If we all speak up, together we have the power to stop this radical nominee.
Today, Congress is meeting to make real decisions on how America will fight AIDS and extreme poverty- decisions that will impact millions. Our leaders need to hear from YOU.
Please email Congress TODAY to let them know you support the Senate funding levels to fight extreme poverty, including $3.6 billion to fight global AIDS.
Our leaders on Capitol Hill really do have the power to change a child's life in Africa. Today, 350,000 people are alive because America is fighting global AIDS and we can do even more together. This year, America could give life-saving treatment to over 500,000 more people-- kids, mothers, fathers and teachers who hold the key to lifting their nations out of poverty. Together, Americans can support poverty-fighting projects that work, saving people's lives and building new hope in the world's poorest countries.
