Normal people have motivations for peace, rulers have other reasons. Here is one.

Oil and the Saudi Peace Offensive

With crude prices in the range of $130 a barrel, the Saudis are now making more money on oil than they could have imagined five years ago when the price was below $40 a barrel. The Saudis don’t know how long these prices will last. Endless debates are raging over whether high oil prices are the result of speculation, the policy of the U.S. Federal Reserve, conspiracy by the oil companies and so on. The single fact the Saudis can be certain of is that the price of oil is high, they don’t know how long it will remain high, and they don’t want anything interfering with their amassing vast financial reserves that might have to sustain them in lean times should they come.
In short, the Saudis are trying to reduce the threat of war in the region. War is at this moment the single greatest threat to their interests. In particular, they are afraid of any war that would close the Strait of Hormuz, through which a large portion of the oil they sell flows. The only real threat to the strait is a war between the United States and Iran in which the Iranians countered an American attack or blockade by mining the strait. It is assumed that the United States could readily deal with any Iranian countermove, but the Saudis have watched the Americans in Iraq and they are not impressed. From the Saudi point of view, not having a war is the far better option.

US Election - Independent June 04, 2008 3:53 PM

Thanks to your ongoing support, the Nader/Gonzalez peace in the Middle East campaign is aiming to be on the ballot nationwide in November.

Only Nader/Gonzalez stands with the courageous Israeli and Palestinian peace movements.

Only Nader/Gonzalez stands with the majority of Jewish Americans and Arab Americans which polls repeatedly show support a two-state solution as a way for peace in the Middle East.

Only Nader/Gonzalez would reverse U.S. policy in the Middle East.

Doubt it?

Then just listen to Barack Obama's speech from this morning to the militarist and right-wing American Israel Public Affairs Committee (AIPAC).

Did Obama make one mention of the illegal Israeli blockade of Gaza's 1.5 million people and the UN-documented resulting humanitarian disaster there?

He did not.

Instead, Obama talked about "a Gaza controlled by Hamas with rockets raining down on Israel."

Did Obama mention U.S. government supplied Israeli firepower resulting in Palestinian civilian casualties in Gaza at a ratio of 400 to 1 (Palestinian to Israeli)

He did not.

Many peace loving Israelis and Jewish Americans will be disgusted by Obama's speech today.

Like the editor at the Israeli newspaper Haaretz who wrote that the Israeli government has "lost its reason" through the brutal incarceration, devastation and deprivation of the innocent people in Gaza.

Obama told AIPAC today that "we must isolate Hamas." (In its current form.)

Did he mention that a March 2008 Haaretz poll showed that 64 percent of the Israeli people want direct negotiations for peace between Israel and Hamas, while only 28% oppose it?

He did not.

Instead, Obama said this morning that "Egypt must cut off the smuggling of weapons into Gaza."

Did he say that Israel must stop bombing the people of Gaza?

He did not.

Obama this morning told AIPAC that "Jerusalem will remain the capital of Israel, and it must remain undivided."

Did Obama mention that this pledge undermines the widespread international consensus two-state solution peace plan?

He did not.

So, in a nutshell:

In this critical election year, Nader/Gonzalez stands on these issues with the majority of Israelis, Palestinians, Jewish-Americans and Arab Americans.

Obama/McCain stand with the hard-line minority position of AIPAC.

With your generous help, Nader/Gonzalez will work to make the voices for peace heard throughout this election year.

Together, we will make a difference.

Onward

The Nader Team

Prem Rawat answers questions about Peace May 26, 2008 9:16 AM

Prem Rawat Answers Questions About Peace

We live in a world at war. Is it realistic to hope for world peace?
When I was a child, I used to be enamored with the idea of “world peace,” and it was a great thought to have. Then, as I started traveling throughout the world and meeting people, I realized there was no such thing. In all these years, I have never come across anything tangible that I could call the world. It is not the world that needs to be fixed; it is people. When people are at peace within, there will be world peace. Right now, people are fascinated by war.

Why is it that people create war?
War begins with denial. One group decides that their cause is greater and that the other group's cause does not exist. Causes become greater, and human beings are reduced to nothing.

People fight because they give more legitimacy to their causes than to human life. In their rationalizations, they have diminished the value of human life. The first time someone came up with the idea that a cause was greater than human life, the balance was upset, and it has continued to get worse. Human beings will fight when they do not understand what life is all about, because in wars we squander life. War does not exist only on the battlefield. At home, without a war, we squander life.

Many humanists, philosophers, and world leaders have expressed that war starts within the minds of people. Would you agree with that?
World war can seem tame compared to the battle that rages within a human being. Lifetimes are destroyed in this battle; precious moments are sacrificed; total decimation can take place. The fight within is the biggest battle. We need to be at peace with ourselves because on our own battlefield the “I” is being decimated.

The unrest within keeps us from finding true peace. As long as there is no peace within, there will always be war outside. The unrest of the body surely brings misery, but the misery that comes from the unrest of the heart is far worse. It has to be the most miserable thing there is. And yet, the heart has been enduring it for a long, long time.

In a world at war, is inner peace possible?
There is a symphony playing inside. We can awaken to that possibility. That's all it is—a possibility. It is possible to be fulfilled, to be in peace within. It is possible to understand the value of each breath, to acknowledge the yearning for life. It is possible to turn pain into gratitude, doubt into knowing. It is possible to turn all the questions into one answer. One answer. What kind of answer? The one answer that does not have a question.

How can a person help peace manifest in their life?
Peace within is not something that can be created or invented. It is a process of unveiling the peace that already exists. It is more a matter of reduction. Eliminate everything else, and peace will be there because it is already there in all of us. When does joy come? When we stop doing all the other things that we do, we feel joy because joy is inherently inside of us. Peace and joy are inherently inside, and when we try to create them, we get further removed from them.

Tell us more about peace.
When a human being truly realizes that there is an absence of truth and happiness in his life, an absence of peace, then a fire comes from within. A real fire to find peace burns for that person from the heart, not from the head. That person starts to search.

Look for the thirst. It is the thirst within that propels us in the right direction. That is what we need—the rediscovery of the passion for joy. Let that be the driving force.

When this life feels full, when this breath is not being thrown away, kindness begins to manifest. Kindness is the outpouring of a heart filled with joy. That is when peace comes into our lives. That is when we begin to find the resolution to our problems. It is not that our problems are resolved, but that we find within a simplicity that is magnificent.

Jimmy Carter, this Pink Badge is for you! April 28, 2008 2:42 PM

It's time for true statesmanship and gutsy leadership that gathers strength from peacemaking, not saber-rattling.

While George Bush's war mongering has made the U.S. hated all over the world, this week former president Jimmy Carter's courageous efforts in the Middle East could be crucial steps toward restoring peace to the region. After all, Carter negotiated the only lasting peace in the Middle East -- the Egypt-Israel peace accord that has prevented an Arab-Israeli war ever since.

The US mainstream media has blasted Carter for meeting with leaders of Hamas--the party that won the January 2006 elections in Palestine. We, on the other hand appreciate his tremendous courage and conviction: by agreeing to talk with Hamas, Carter is staying true to America's democratic principles of recognizing the legitimacy of a representative government, while underscoring the hypocrisy of the US mainstream media and the White House. The UK's Guardian Unlimited best describes Carter's foresight and political pragmatism:

Carter understood that no matter how odious one might find Hamas, there simply is no alternative to dealing with them. And in negotiating with them, Carter was only doing what Israel and the US should be doing themselves. In fact, many experts in both countries predict that the US and Israel will eventually be doing this themselves despite all protestations to the contrary. More...

Please click here to send Jimmy Carter a thank you and a Pink Badge of Courage for his efforts to actively seek a solution to the agonizing conflict between Israel and Palestine. We will deliver your signature directly to the Carter Center in Atlanta, along with a beautiful Jerusalem Hope Candle crafted by Israeli and Palestinian women that embodies Carter's vision of creating durable peace in the Middle East.

You, too, can be a citizen diplomat and show the peace-loving face of the American people by taking one of our reality tours to the Middle East.

Our sister organization Global Exchange will be hosting a citizens' delegation to Iran in October, a focus on the plight of Iraqi refugees in Jordan and Syria from November 26 - December 06 and a life-changing trip to Palestine and Israel from December 6 - 16.

You don't have to go overseas to be a citizen diplomat. Please join us in Washington, DC at the legendary CODEPINK house on Capitol Hill to help us spread peace through the halls of Congress and around town. Click here to apply. We especially encourage you to come in June and July, when we will be hosting week-long training/action sessions. You'll leave DC feeling invigorated inspired, and ready to take action back home!

Together, let's thank Jimmy Carter for his extraordinary efforts, and commit to following his lead as citizens deeply committed to diplomacy, not war.

Words of Peace in Tel Avive, Israel April 12, 2008 9:09 AM

On Wednesday 9th April Prem Rawat, known also by the honorary title Maharaji, has traveled the world for four decades, inspiring people to find peace within, attended an event in Tel Avive, Israel.
Below is an excerpt from this address: (well worth a read):

"Shalom. That's why we are here. To talk a little about peace.

I'm not here to tell you that you are right or wrong, or to tell you the problems of the world.

But rather, despite all those problems that are wrong, there are some things that are good. Really really good! All the ugliness in this world, there is something very very beautiful! All the mistakes in this world, there is one that is perfect – not a mistake. That perfection, that beauty, that which is right is in you. That is what I have come to talk about. People like to point out all the problems. In a way I'm glad they do. But some people should also remember the good, the right, the beautiful. This life, this existence IS beautiful for we forget the importance of being alive. We get caught up in our ideas and concepts and we forget.

Look at the desert – Not in the summer, but when it rains. Mysteriously smooth. The desert holds in it the promise of beautiful life – tender flowers. But it needs the rain. Without rain rivers don't flow. That day the river waits and waits and patiently waits for it to rain, for the water to flow -

Who are we?..........What are we? The sum of all these things that happen around us? Or is there something more? Are we our responsibilities?..."I have to do this" or something inside each human being that wants to smile, be thankful, feel gratitude, feel joy. This is not my idea by the way. A flash of lightning didn't hit me.
THIS IS YOUR EXPERIENCE. Good days, Bad days. Good days we feel happy, peaceful, alive, connected, centered. Bad days – you know what? Even the bad days, I just want to be happy.

I do not come here to try to explain the concept of happiness. No one can. Happiness is...happiness because you feel good. It's not ABOUT something. But this is what we think happiness is. The child passes college, you win the lottery ticket, get a promotion and then, "I am so happy". We think this world is going to make us happy. I say to you.....YOU are the only person that can make YOU happy. The person you know very little about, a stranger. You know your friend, other people, associates, but very little about yourself. WHO ARE YOU? (You are) the person who can make you VERY happy!
WHO ARE YOU?
You came – were given this gift of breath. You don't think much about it....oh YOU WILL! But at the end when it's getting hard. Life is important...

I want you to take a minute, take some time and understand YOU.
Life is incredibly important. You are not just a number or a name.
WHO ARE YOU? "I'm me, I'm alive, I'm real.
Some countries issue you an I-D-E-N-T-I-T-Y card. This is your I-D-E-N-T-IT-Y!!! A piece of plastic. Your picture is not important. Your name is not important. The signature of somebody who does not know me, never met me, is saying I am me.

I'm not criticizing but just know that you are more than this piece of paper. You are more than the sum of goods and bads. So many of us live in fear (and in certain places it's a good idea). But there is a place inside of you that can not have fear. You should be feeling FREEDOM. What's my definition I have of freedom? When someone has to tell me I am free, I am not free. Freedom is something a person can feel even if inside a prison. Too much? Inside a prison how do we feel free? We have our formulas. A few months back Paris Hilton was crying, and having a terrible time (at the prospect of facing prison time). It was on the tv, newspapers, magazines, etc.

How do you explain to a poor Indian farmer why Paris Hilton is crying? She's talented, good looking, and a prison cell is better than many poor families' homes. People pay for security. She was going to a very secure place. You see, sadness has nothing to do with formulas – and neither does happiness! NO! Either you feel or you don't feel joy. Either you feel or you don't feel understanding, Either you feel or you don't feel peace or you saying 'Shalom' 100 times isn't going to do it. 'Shalom, Shalom, Shalom...Happiness, Happiness, Happiness"...isn't going to do it! What do you FEEL? Feel that feeling! This is when peace will dance. This is when peace will dance. Happiness willsing a song for you. This is what this is about my friends. Man's greatest achievement isn't going to the moon...uh uh! Because soon it will be overshadowed by trips to Mars, or further out and out and out. Somebody will always come along and break the record.

WHAT IS YOURS? Do you know?
YOU!
This life pounding into you - your breath. Where does itcome from? Where does it go? It brings with every breath, life!

Life holds promises, life holds promises, life holds promises, life holds promises. After promises gifts, after gifts...Blind gifts have been given and accepted. If you are a stranger to your own self, fear you just come, lived awhile, and like many, ended up gone. Came, lived awhile and gone. There are 3 facts: Your were born – the fact is that you are alive, and...you've got to go. Birth has happened. When I was born, I don't remember it happening, but I know I was born. Going...it's going to happen. No appointment, and no control...ahhhhh! But between the birth and the going – I can do something about. Of all these, let it be that I am fulfilled. That I know myself. That I UNDERSTAND myself. Because this is the desert and I want the rain of peace and understanding to come...seeds waiting to flower, to blossom....but we need to see our INNER POTENTIAL.

JOY resides within inside of us. That's why!

So, I have a little voice. I've been speaking of this since I was very young. Pe

Peace Action is dedicated to the idea that the citizens of these United States should be the primary driver of U.S. foreign and domestic policy.  That's why we were formed, over 50 years ago, as a grassroots membership organization.  We work to bring the voice of the people to the people in power.

In order to fulfill this momentous task we need to hear from you either online through the mail.

We have created an online survey to gauge the temperature of our entire grassroots network.  We will use the results of this online survey to focus our online campaigns around your interests and passions.

You can also print and fill out our 2008 Member Survey.  It asks you to identify your priorities for this year and in the years to come.  It will help steer the direction of the Peace Action National Congress where leaders in the Peace Action Network will strategize network wide priorities and tactics for the next two years.  Activate your membership by printing and returning this form.

Take some time today to identify your priorities for peace.  We appreciate your feedback.

Motivation for peace is through organizing one's own life for peace, individually and collectively. This is what Mahatma Gandhi taught humanity, if at all he is considered as contributed something to humanity. His was a living word. But for that he had the courage and conviction to say "MY LIFE IS MY MESSAGE". Mahatma Gandhi's spinning wheel itself was to organize one's own life for peace. Its economics and politics as well as spiritually are something to be personally experienced to believe it. It is unfortunate that post-independence Indian leadership totally ignored this and people are paying a price for it at the cost of peace.  [ send green star]

A WAY TO GLOBAL PEACE FOREVER. January 30, 2008 5:08 AM

On the 19th of September 2005 I watched a program on Channel 4/UK titled 'Peace One Day'. Afterwards while discussing the programe with my friends we had a good laugh... 'Good for them, one day of peace. But what's wrong with the remaining 365 days?' Since then we have committed ourselves to spreading the invitation by the General Assembly 55/282 of International Day of Peace where in paragraph 3 we read: "... INVITES ALL, member states, organizations of the United Nations system, regional and non-govermental organisations and INDIVIDUALS"... (like ourselves) ... to COOPERATE with the United Nations in ESTABLISHING of the GLOBAL CEASEFIRE..." Our mission is to petition The United Nations to extend the existing Resolution adopted by General Assembly 55/282, International Day of Peace, for remaining 365 days... and intend to do it with the united single voice and active supporters involved in the process, until the Global Peace Forever is established. In May 2007 our petition has been registered as Petition No:691/2007 in the Committee on Petitions in the European Parliament, Recently we posted our petition to Member States of the United Nations Organization, We shall continue dissemination with your help, until the Global Peace Forever is established. http://www.peace365.org/ Marek  [ send green star]

Last month, with your continuing efforts, Peace Action lobbied The House Energy and Water Appropriations Subcommittee to completely cut funding for Bombplex 2030 and the Reliable Replacement Warhead (RRW). But there is still work to be done.

Tell Congress you oppose further funding for nuclear weaponry.

We expect a full appropriations committee vote on the bill Wednesday, June 6th.  Find out if your Congressperson is on this vital committee - click here to contact them TODAY.

The full House floor vote is expected on June 13th. The Bush administration is lobbying hard to fund development of these new nuclear weapons - tell your representative you won’t pay for more nuclear bombs.

We need an unambiguous victory in the House to strengthen our hand with the Senators who expect to vote on funding by mid-June.

Peace Action and our allies are working put an end to the production of nuclear weapons in the U.S.   With your help we can continue to mobilize grass-roots efforts when the proposal hits the Senate floor.  Click here to help us prepare for the Senate.

For the past 50 years Peace Action has been mobilizing the nation to fight for a more peaceful, nuclear free, world.   Your action today helps us continue our legacy of working toward a nuclear free world.  We’d like to extend our thanks to you for your continued support of our mission.

Participate in One of the Largest Global Meditations for Peace...

Dear International Friends,

On May 23rd, the Peaceful Earth Community will participate in a GLOBAL teleconference for peace.

We are joining with CommonPassion.org who, in cooperation with many local and global groups (one of them being Peaceful Earth), is orchestrating the world’s largest interfaith global meditation and prayer event ever performed.

This will be a series of meditation and prayers for community and global peace to be held between May 15th and May 29th, 2007.

It is anticipated that over 1,000,000 people will participate in this two-week program from virtually every faith-system, religious group, indigenous community and meditation assembly currently in existence.

Concurrent with the prayer-meditation practices they will monitor crime statistics, emergency call data and other social indicators to ascertain change as a result of this peace-creating program.

The focus of the meditation/prayer is GLOBAL Peace, we will also be concentrating on the following specific areas: Iraq, Darfur, Sudan, Jerusalem and New Orleans.

Many of you have requested to do a monthly prayer/meditation for peace, and here is your chance to hop on board and join Peaceful Earth via teleconference.

The conference line can hold up to 99 participants and we'd love to see the call FULL.

Peaceful Earth is a global community and we'd love to see people from all across the globe participate.

FEW MONTHS AGO DANIEL BARENBOÏ GAVE CONCERTS WITH MIGUEL ANGEL ESTRALLA AND SYMPHONIC ORCHESTRA COMPOSED BY YOUNG PEOPLE WITHOUT DISTINCTION OF THEIR APARTENANCE. IT WAS VERY EMOTIONAL AND MERVELLOUS.

ALL THESE ARTISTS AND PRIVATE PEOPLE PROVE THAT ACCORDS SHOULD EXIST BUT EACH TIME SOMETHING RIGHT IS  DONE, THERE  IS ATTACK VERY MURDERED.

WHO IS RESPONSIBLE ???

I KNOW VERY FRIENDLY    PEOPLE JUIFS,   ARABICS, CHRISTIANS,  AGNOSTICS AND MORE AND ALL HAVE THE PRINCIPAL QUALITY : ABSOLUTE TOLERANCE.

TOO MUCH DEADS, INJURRIED AND HATE - HATE - HATE WHICH IS STAYINS FOR A LONG TIME.

I WOULD LIKE TO SEE PEACE IN ALL PARTS OF THE WORLD.

Join Us at the Largest Mobilization Against the Occupation! May 18, 2007 12:44 PM

http://www.democracyinaction.org/dia/organizations/jvfp/signUp.jsp?key=2276

We want to invite you to participate in the most important Israel-Palestine mobilization ever in Washington, D.C. on June 10 and 11, marking the 40th anniversary of Israel's occupation of the West Bank, East Jerusalem and Gaza. Thousands of people from across the country will converge in front of the Capitol and the White House to say No to U.S. support for the Occupation, a set of violations of international law which have taken a devastating toll on human life.

Jewish Voice for Peace is working closely with the march organizers, the US Campaign to End the Occupation and United for Peace and Justice, to make sure there is a strong Jewish presence at the march. That's why we want to invite you to march together with Jews and other Jewish Voice for Peace supporters, and to come with us on the 11th to lobby Congress.

Please let us know if you're coming so we can prepare lobbying materials and anticipate the size of the Jewish contingent. If you sign up in advance, we'll make sure you get a sign.

Please
register here now to march together in Washington on June 10.

Tell your friends.

Campaign For Real Peace Talks May 10, 2007 11:57 AM

Angry and excited! Over 80,000 people signed Avaaz's campaign for Real Middle East Peace Talks, and the diplomatic buzz is growing. We put up billboards in Jerusalem created by members there, and they got national media coverage – then a couple of extremists vandalised the billboards.

This is good news -- it shows we're making a real impact. Let's put the billboards back up with even more signatures, and put them in Tel Aviv as well as Jerusalem! Can you help grow the campaign to more than 100,000 voices for peace before Friday? Click here to sign the petition:

http://www.avaaz.org/en/real_middle_east_talks

That'll show the vandals: every time they deface our message we'll put it back up with more support. Most Israelis and Palestinians say they want proper negotiations: we refuse to be silenced by a small minority.

At this moment of upheaval in Middle East politics, these mock travel adverts are challenging and disarming the Israeli public -- here's some of what the Jerusalem Post said:

While enticing Israelis to travel by featuring attractive women and scenery are nothing new, these billboards were created to stop Israelis in their tracks. These ads feature "enemy states" such as Saudi Arabia and Syria in a whole new way, with only the fine print noting that the price is for one room and a double bed - dependent on the Saudi peace plan.

"Israelis visiting Damascus, Dubai, even Jericho is inconceivable today – unless they're in uniform," said Hilder. "We wanted to help Israelis look and think again about the Arab Peace Initiative."

We've had a great response to the ads, though Israel's politicians are still dancing around the idea of real peace talks based on 1967 borders. So don't let the extremists silence us – join the campaign, get us to 100,000 and we'll put up more billboards!

With hope,

Paul, Galit, Ricken, Ben, Graziela, Iain and all at Avaaz

Ps: our Stop the Clash video (part of this campaign) got an amazing response from people all round the world and won a non-profit video competition (http://www.nten.org/blog/2007/04/25/things-we-like). See it here:  http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=WWyJJQbFago

Modern Mothers For Peace May 08, 2007 3:05 PM

Not surprisingly, many of the most passionate and creative advocates for a safer world for our children and future generations are mothers themselves. It is my privilege as Executive Director of Ploughshares Fund to provide them with the resources they need to turn their vision into action and results. I’d like you to meet some of Ploughshares’ Modern Mothers for Peace.

A History of Mother's Day May 01, 2007 3:58 PM

Mother’s Day was originally designated as a day to inspire people to work for peace. It was conceived after wars at home and abroad by American abolitionist and suffragist Julia Ward Howe.

Besides initiating the tradition of Mother’s Day, Howe is best known as the author of the words to “The Battle Hymn of the Republic”. As a pacifist during the Civil War, she witnessed the devastating effects of the conflict through her work with widows and orphans. In 1870 she wrote the “Mother’s Day Proclamation,” a call to women to oppose war and to convene to promote peace and be the architects of their family’s — and their own — political futures. She presented it at international peace conferences in London and Paris , where she lamented the atrocities of not only the American Civil War, but also the Franco-Prussian War.

Howe envisioned the first “Mother’s Day” as a time for women to gather, grieve and determine a peaceful solution to war. Her “Mother’s Day Proclamation” reads:

Let women now leave all that may be left of home for a great and earnest day of counsel.

Let them meet first, as women, to bewail and commemorate the dead.
Let them solemnly take counsel with each other as to the means
Whereby the great human family can live in peace,
Each bearing after his own time the sacred impress, not of Caesar,
But of God.

In the name of womanhood and humanity, I earnestly ask
That a general congress of women without limit of nationality
May be appointed and held at someplace deemed most convenient
And at the earliest period consistent with its objects,
To promote the alliance of the different nationalities,
The amicable settlement of international questions,
The great and general interests of peace.

In 1872 she continued to promote the power of motherhood and womanhood for peace by calling for a “Mother’s Day for Peace,” to be celebrated on June 2. In 1873, women in 18 American cities held Mother’s Day for Peace gatherings. During Howe’s lifetime there was never any formal recognition of Mother’s Day, but Howe’s efforts influenced Anna Jarvis, whose mother, also named Anna, had organized women during the Civil War to work for better sanitary conditions for both sides, calling for Mothers’ Work Days.

After the death of her mother, daughter Anna Jarvis was determined to found a memorial day for women. She celebrated her first Mother’s Day on May 10, 1908 , at the Methodist church where her mother had taught Sunday school. West Virginia Governor William E. Glasscock issued the first state-recognized Mother’s Day proclamation on April 26, 1910 . Two years later, Anna was recognized as the founder of Mother’s Day by the General Methodist Conference.

President Woodrow Wilson declared an official national Mother’s Day in 1914, approving the Congressional resolution to celebrate the day every year on the second Sunday in May.

The nightmare in Iraq worsens daily. It's make-or-break time -- but next Thursday in Egypt, we could start to turn the tide. Because on May 3rd – for the first time ever - top US and Iraqi leaders will meet with Iran and Syria plus international powers. They can agree on negotiations to end the war -- or escalate their bloody conflict.

Iraq: It Ends on May 3rd Avaaz is launching a major advertising and text-message campaign inside Iraq this week to bring Iraqi voices to this decisive meeting. As citizens around the world, let's join our voices with theirs to end this war -- sign the petition calling for negotiations and a withdrawal of US troops here:
http://www.avaaz.org/en/iraq_new_plan/

To make sure we're heard, we'll hand-deliver our petition to the leaders' conference in Sharm El-Sheikh on May 3rd, and project Iraqi text-messages on to a huge wall near the US Capitol building in Washington.

Please read the personal email below from Khalid, an Iraqi Avaaz member. Khalid and our other Iraqi members need a show of global support from the rest of us. The campaign is already supported by over 75,000 people as well as key international experts :    http://www.avaaz.org/en/iraq_new_plan/

Khalid Jarrar and his mother Faiza have been wonderful supporters of Avaaz in Iraq. We asked Khalid to write a message, here's what he emailed us yesterday:

Dear AVAAZ,

I want to introduce myself, and tell you a story, but i don't know how to start, and where to stop.

My name is Khalid, i am an environmental engineering student and i am 24, but this is the least important to know about me, what's really important for me to tell, and for you to know, is that I am Iraqi, and that I have a deep, deep wound in my soul, that has been bleeding for over four years now.

Iraq, my soul, is bleeding. And i had to leave it against my will, because of the incredibly bad security situation that led to me getting kidnapped and my family paying a huge ransom, which made me leave immediately after i was released in fear that i would be kidnapped again. I left Iraq one month before my graduation and had to come to Jordan, which made me lose two years of my university time and life, but even worse, made me lose the company of the Tigris and the Euphrates.

I had to travel, leaving Iraq behind me, to live like a refuge, one of a million other refuges, in a country of less than five millions people, that already has its own financial problems without needing our additional burden to add to it. I am an Iraqi refuge in Jordan.

Since I left in July 2005, things have exponentially deteriorated in every possible aspect, now people hardly get 1 hours of electricity a day, they have water problems, regular lack of gas that its prices multiplied about 20 times since the war. Let alone the main and real problems of the actual presence of an occupation that is leaching on the country and causing the destruction to its people, unity, sovereignty, infrastructure and economy.

Iraq is the loving mother, that gave birth to thinkers and builders, people that enriched humanity with their contributions in all aspects of life, people that their civilization accumulated for over 7000 years till now.

Iraq, the noble wisdom, the land of the two flowing rivers, the land of the mosques and churches, is in crises, and needs your help.

yes. it needs your help. Iraqis need the support of the world, of every human being that believes in the values of justice and peace, of every person that cares about the judgment of history on what the world did when Iraq needed its support the most. Iraq, needs your voice, to support the voices of its own people, to help remove that injustice, and help it rise up again and stand on its feet.

Help us demand to give Iraq back to Iraqis, and to prove to the future generations once more, that occupations don't last, that occupations are wrong, and that the will of people is invincible. Help us clear to them that our hearts and minds, our values and sense of justice, are stronger than any tank, battleship or rocket. Help us by singing AVAAZ petition that will be presented to the politicians discussing the future of Iraq security, help by asking your friends to do so, let our voices be louder than the roars of weapons and the madness of greeds, help us, sign AVAAZ petition now, let our voice be heard, support Iraq today, and once the last occupying soldier leaves iraq, and once we rebuild our country with out own hands, we will reciever you in Baghdad, and you will see the love and gratitude competed by nothing but Iraqi hospitality. Together we can prove that our brotherhood is strong, together we can prove that our bonds are real, I can see that day coming, really soon.

Khalid

Peace December 08, 2006 5:10 AM

Give it a chance.  Each of us can start today and let the ripples move out.  No more anger.  No more jealousy.  No more greed.  No more predjudice.  Let each live their life in the manner they see fit, as long as each does not harm any other living thing.

Works for me, doncha think?

Kings are proud of what they OWN.

It took Humanity a million years of cooperating across generations, across borders and beliefs, of sharing their accumulating wisdom, just to invent a light bulb.

The cooperation that Created us is being threatened by the presidents and priests of invisible borders and magic beliefs.

National and religious politics has been dividing children, consuming the earth to build weapons, and attacking Creation using our kids.

If we have to attack, belittle, steal, convert, diminish, harm or destroy Creation to get what we call, ''Good'', then our definition of ''Good'' is an axiom, (a lie).

The evolution of Humanity is the product of the accumulation of our DIVERSITY.

Governments and religions that condemn, attack and convert the diversity of Humanity are the oposite of Creation.

In Creation, ''Predators'' and ''Prey'' are created Equal and have an equal chance of continuing or becoming extinct.

A Lion protects and strengthens the Life around it, taking only what it NEEDS to take, to support the future of Life... taking only the slowest, weakest and sickest from the herd, strengthening the heard upon which the future of Creation will depend.

''Predator'' or ''Prey'', every living thing sacrifices ITS OWN LIFE for the future of this Creation.

Governments and religions are NOT ALIVE.

They are the OPOSITE of Life.

Their priorities are not those of living things.

They teach Humanity slavery to the presidents and the priests of invisible borders and magic beliefs.

They teach the destruction of Creation (Living Things) to elevate their empires (Dead Things).

They are ''The False Gods'' and their their Crusaders are still Invading Continents.

Warning: The same Human Isolation and ''education'', that created the divided feuding tribes of the Middle East, is at work in the USA.

The cooperation that Created Humanity is being replaced by the teaching of Competition, promoted and perpetuated by the Greedy Plantation Owners heading governments and religions.

Parents are kept busy laboring for half of their Life and spending the other half of their Life trying to buy back the life that was taken from them.

Children are told not to talk to strangers, while government controlled nedia teach them to use physical force to solve their problems.

The citizens are told to be ''Democrats'' or ''Republicans'' and to compete against each other, put each other out of business to obtain the artificially limited resources provided by the Plantation Owners.

With fashions, perfumes, and painted faces, the citizens attempt to resurrect the HUMAN COOPERATION that is their Joy and their empowerment.

But they live in the political, commercial, and germophobic hostility of their civilization's fabrication.

Keeping slaves ignorant, starving and laboring indefinitley is not a new concept.

It is in use today in America.

The Patriots of flags, and worshippers of gods, are NOT patriots of Life, Family or the future of creation.

Your rulers will tell you to make weapons and become cannibals, killing your own kind.

What will you tell your children to do with their lives ? Make Swords or Plows. Will they live to kill for the rulers of empires, or to Live to save the diversity that Created Humanity ?

                        We Have The Power

The November election results sent a clear message that Americans want a new direction in Iraq and in our own national leadership. It was a stunning repudiation of Bush's Iraq policy but our work is not done yet. Now more than ever, there is an immediate need to hold our new Congress accountable to the Peace Voters who elected them.

Take charge and write to House Speaker Nancy Pelosi today! Tell Pelosi that you will be watching her first 100 days in Congress to make sure that she and her colleagues put Iraq as a top legislative priority. We cannot afford to waste any more time before bringing our troops home!

TAKE THE PLEDGE! September 25, 2006 12:27 PM

I have this pledge taped to our fridge, a daily reminder and a source of inspiration.

      **Pledge of Nonviolence**

Making peace must start within us, in our families, and in our community. Each of us, commit as best we can to become engaged in the practice of Nonviolence.

       ***To Respect Self and Others

To respect myself, to affirm others and to avoid uncaring criticism,
hateful words, physical attacks and self-destructive behavior.

       ***To Communicate Better

To share my feelings honestly, to look for safe ways to express my anger, and to work at solving problems peacefully.

       ***To Listen

To listen carefully to one another, especially those who disagree with me, and to consider others' feelings and needs rather than insist on having my own way.

        ***To Forgive

To apologize and make amends when I have hurt another, to forgive others, and to keep from holding grudges.

      *** To Respect Nature

To treat the environment and all living things with respect and care.

       ***To Recreate Nonviolently

To promote athletic and recreational activities that encourage cooperation and to avoid social activities that make violence look exciting, funny or acceptable.

       ***To Be Courageous

To challenge violence in all its forms whenever I encounter it,
whether at home, at work, in the congregation, or in the community, and to stand with others who are treated unfairly.

      *** This is my pledge

I believe that each person can move the world in the direction of peace through his or her daily nonviolent choice and action.

A single voice that's clear and strong
Can turn into a worldwide chorus

Just one voice
One single voice
If you say you can
Then you can

A single moon turns the tide
A single seed becomes the harvest
A single sun within the sky
Keeps the whole world spinning for us

Just one voice
One single voice
If you say you can
Well then you can, you can

A single drop becomes the rain
A single step becomes the journey
A single heart that tries again
Can change the course of history's turning

Just one voice
One single voice
If you say you can
Well then you can, you can

JUST ONE VOICE

World War I was once said to be "the war to end all wars". Wars do not end wars they only make new wars. Sorrow and grieving from loss, hatred, revenge, retaliation, starvation, oppression, fear, power mongers poisoned by greed and big money from makers of war machines are all linked to more wars.
Death of innocent men women and children , animals and destruction of eco systems are all linked to war. War is insane! We need to stop the bloodshed and insanity. Not by fighting more wars but by helping each other. Continue to take the steps to stop wars. Every step counts, no matter how little. Let us continue to march step by step with peaceful words and actions spreading love, compassion and understanding. Just say no to war and yes to peace. Pray for everyone, even those who think war is the answer. Pray for the consciousness of all humankind to leave the belief in wars behind and work for peace.

I can only wish.. September 13, 2006 8:19 AM

I had faith in humanity's ability to live at peace with itself. Society is a capricious thing, with each individual living in their own version of reality. I place so much of myself into the Rule of Law, but as a man-made construct Law is not without its faults. Is Law the answer? I want to believe it is; a product of society's desire to agree on something and live by it. The only trouble is that little part about consensus. The more I study law the more I desperately wish peace was so simple.  [ send green star]

Motivations September 05, 2006 12:17 PM

The motivations should be as simple as the nose on all our faces. Peace is a comodity that cannot be left aside to waste away. There are no other answers but Peace. There must be a two state solution and the motivation should be even simpler than the statement itself- children, people, rights, and the sheer worthlessness that war brings.  I can only say dialect will be well needed under these circumstances. Pray, hope and think PEACE!!!!!

May we all live to see it!!!!

Archbishop Desmond Tutu on a Ministry for Peace
Posted on Wednesday, May 24 @ 07:16:04 BST Article
What are your thoughts on the movement to establish Ministries and Departments of Peace in governments worldwide?

TUTU: It’s an extraordinary idea and, it fills one with a great deal of excitement and exhilaration, and it sounds crazy, but then I think it was crazy when Gandhi said we’re going to work so that eventually India is free. It must have been crazy when Martin Luther King Jr. also said we’re going to make civil rights a real issue in the United States, and maybe when Nelson Mandela and others said one day apartheid will be no more, that we need those like yourselves who dream dreams and say, “It is possible. It is possible for people to know that war is not natural.”

People have been able to live peacefully together, but if they live peacefully together after war, why should they have war first before they can realize that it is a great deal better. War is not nice to children, it’s not nice to people, it’s not nice to the environment.

And so I say go for it. This is marvellous. Go for it and really be crazy and say, one day we’ll ask, “Why were we so stupid for so long because of something so obvious?” Saying let us put our massive investment that we are putting right now in instruments of death and destruction, let us put them into something that is creative, that is life-enhancing teaching kids that there are ways of resolving differences that don’t need to be violent. You can sit down and ultimately say, “You know, actually, an enemy is a friend waiting to be made.”

Conflicts September 03, 2006 7:39 PM

It's not just the conflict between Hezzbollah and the Israelis. It's about all humans and how quick we are to judge and condemn others. It's easy to say someone is wrong. It's not so easy to say why. And why you are right. Think. Do you really believe what you are posting? Or is it just some propaganda you've been fed?  [ send green star]

EARTHDANCE 2006 Tuesday, 7:21 AM
EARTHDANCE 2006
September 16th

A CHANCE TO DANCE OUR PRAYERS INTO THE EARTH!!!

This year I'm proud to be the MC for the Northern California Earthdance extravaganza on September 16th (to be broadcast live online). This is the 10th anniversary of the worldwide event which is being celebrated in over 250 locations. Last year the Beloved Community email list helped create many smaller home-based events, and we're hoping to repeat that success. Imagine over 1000 gatherings with people celebrating and dancing their prayers of peace. We hope you'll join us, either at one of the larger events or at a party of your own.

For more info on the celebration, locations or how you can sponsor your own event, go to www.EarthDance.org.

If you live on the west coast of the US I hope you'll be able to join me at the main event in Laytonville, California. Some of the featured acts will be Ani DiFranco, India. Arie and Ozomatli. Special guests include Arun Gandhi, Wavy Gravy and Barbara Marx Hubbard. Indigenous Elders from many nations around the world will also be at Earthdance sharing their wisdom. I'll also be performing on the main stage between acts. Then, at the same time around the world, the Earthdance Prayer for Peace will be prayed by each group around the world, joining the energy together as one. (The peace prayer is listed at the bottom of this email.)

Why do I think this event is so important?

It's time for the younger and older generations to come together and focus their energies for creating a peaceful planet. As I travel to events around the world I am usually surprised that "New Thought" teachings primarily appeal to the over-40 crowd. The younger generation is as dedicated as we are to shifting the paradigm, but they tend to respond to a different energy -- usually based on music and dance. My goal is to participate in more and more events where every group feels comfortable coming together as one, and that's why much of my energy for the next several years will be to promote these diverse expressions and events around the world. I hope you'll join me.

Give Peace A Dance!!!

Here's another easy way to participate:

The PeaceWave~~~~~~~~

The PeaceWave is a grassroots "Wave of Peace" that is being spread across the globe through the organic process of "person to person" interaction and connectivity. The campaign has designed a series of creative business-size cards with quotes from many of the great peacemakers of our time. From Mahatma Gandhi to Bob Marley to even Jimi Hendrix, these are the souls that have inspired millions of people, but it's just the beginning. The campaign organizers would love to send you a package of the cards to spread and share, amplifying peace everywhere you go.

Go to: http://www.thepeacewave.org/?aid=jt to receive your cards.

Each card contains a special peace-quote from well-known peace leaders, from Mahatma Gahdhi to Bob Marley. Sharing these beautiful cards is a simple and touching way to show your commitment to a peaceful world and at the same time you can impact thousands of lives through the simple process of sharing the resonance of peace.

An exciting feature of the "PeaceWave" campaign is the ability to track each card as it makes its journey of peace across the world. On the back of each card is a special tracking number that you can enter into the PeaceWave website- and discover where the card started and where is has traveled. By entering your location you will keep the journey alive and once you pass the card along to someone else you can encourage them to do the same. You can then visit the website at anytime to track the progress of each PeaceWave Card across throughout the world.

Currently over 700,000 Passalong Cards are in circulation in over 80
countries.

We hope that you'll be able to join us at the Earthdance celebration, and spread the PeaceWave everywhere you go.

In Peace,
James Twyman

PETITION TO END WAR

http://www.thepetitionsite.com/takeaction/495764839

Here is what I wrote in the space proveded for comments:

War will stop when, AND ONLY WHEN, every Soldier, Sailor on a warship, Marine, and Airman, PUTS DOWN HIS OR HER WEAPONS AND SIMPLY REFUSES TO FIGHT -- REFUSES TO OBEY ANY ORDERS TO KILL OR TO DESTROY PROPERTY. Refuses orders, got that? REFUSES ORDERS. See the song by Cree singer Buffy Ste. Marie, "The Universal Soldier". "Killing me for you, and you for me......that is not a way to put an end to war." SHOW YOUR SUPPORT FOR ALL SOLDIERS WHO PUT DOWN THEIR WEAPONS AND REFUSE TO INVADE AND OCCUPY OTHER COUNTRIES ON ORDERS FROM THE RICH. Put your money where your mouth is, people! ... I have signed. Have a peaceful weekend my friends

Dear Fellow Human Being,

One of the primary lessons we are taught in childhood is to share. As we become adults, we learn that sharing is not just about toys, it is about food and water, it is about culture and respect, it is about our mother earth. No matter how many would choose to divide us for their personal gain, we are one species, we are one family. It is time that as a species, we act as responsible adults not like misbehaving children. We must see that it is in the interest of each and every one of us to make this world a place where all are safe and secure, a place which is worthy of our children, and grandchildren and all of the generations to follow.

We waste so much money on war and destruction. If we took all that money and effort and put it into food, housing, health care and education, we could transform our world from one of fear and sorrow into one of joy and thanksgiving. We have been told, in so many settings, it is us against them. This is a lie. When we destroy rather than build, it is us against ourselves. Peace and cooperation is the road to the future, if there is to be a future. It is time for the people to stand up and say “we will no longer tolerate this abomination”. It is time for all parties to lay down their arms. It is time for the people of the every country and every creed to come together and tell the war mongers to step aside and let a new era open for mankind. Let us give power to those who advance the cause of peace and prosperity not doom and destruction.

We must do this. We can do this. We will do this. Please do three things to help make this possible:

1)     sign this petition http://www.thepetitionsite.com/takeaction/495764839
2)     forward this email to everyone you can
3)     wear red on October 9th

The petition will be presented to Kofi Annan, the Secretary General of the United Nations, and forwarded to leaders of all the countries of the world. We are using the worldwide web to make this a truly international event and it will only happen if you help. Please include your contacts in other countries. October 9th was chosen because it is the birthday of John Lennon who wrote the song “Imagine”. It also happens to be an especially opportune time in the political calendar of the United States.

While gatherings and marches are encouraged in an effort to gain local media coverage, the wearing of red has deep significance. Red is the color which indicates “stop” and is the color of blood. Therefore, the statement being made is to “stop the bloodshed”. There are many situations where people may have to work and may not be able to carry written expressions of their feelings. In this way, everybody can participate and it will give us the opportunity to really see how very many of us there are who feel this way. Together we can change the world.

Sincerely,

Edwin S. Purcell, Ph.D.

War is unhealthy for children and other living things! August 30, 2006 2:01 PM

I recently watched a documentary called "Promises", wherein the filmmaker a group of seven Jewish and Palestinian children between 1995 and 1998. It was wrenching to see some of these young people already indoctrinated into the 'us or them' view of Palestinian conflict, but it was just as moving to witness some of them opening up their hearts and minds to the possibility of living in peace with each other.

The scene that struck me most viscerally was when two young Israeli boys spoke of their ever-underlying fear that one day their school bus would be bombed. How could any parent bear to see their child--any child!--live with such a constant fear for their lives?

This documentary is really a must-see for anyone who wants to understand the Israeli-Palestinian conflict. Here's a link for more info on the film: http://www.allmovie.com/cg/avg.dll?p=avg&sql=1:242044

Help Stop the Escalating Violence in the Middle East

As the current crisis in Israel and the Occupied Territories continues to escalate, the respect and observance of international law has declined dramatically. Israeli armed forces have targeted civilian infrastructure leaving thousands without electricity and water. Palestinian armed groups have taken one soldier hostage and killed one settler in the West Bank. This follows a period where Israeli air strikes killed dozens of Palestinians including many civilians and Palestinians armed groups launched hundreds of “qassam” rockets injuring several Israelis. Please take action now and send a letter to all sides asking them to stop the violence.

MOTIVATIONS FOR PEACE August 29, 2006 8:06 AM

We're certainly seeing many motivations for WAR between the Israelis and the Hezbollah on this group but few motivations for PEACE.

This thread is for discussion of PEACE between them and how or why that should/could be brought about.
