Satanic Witchery - original essay 5:29 AM

From the early times of housewives to the strong women of today, there has been a sense of power within the female community. Contrary to the popular belief of "the inferior woman being dominated by a male-driven society," I believe that women have always owned the power. Whether it is that they actually possess authority, like Cleopatra VII, who ruled Egypt and the hearts of Julius Caesar and Mark Antony, or whether they can manipulate and seduce their audience, like screen legend Mae West, these women hold something that can never be inferior, the power of Satanic witchery. The Satanic witch has looks, curves, and beauty. However, most importantly she has the knowledge to maneuver herself into control over the vast male population. As a witch, she is the epitome of femininity and power, with her greatest weapon: herself.

The Satanic philosophy, which the attributes of Satanic witchery evolved from, is simple. "Satan represents indulgence, instead of abstinence" (LaVey, The Satanic Bible 25). Satan represents the instinctive, carnal side of man. This side is embraced to gain self-gratification. The Satanic witch uses this philosophy to enchant men and achieve success and power.

The Satanic witch, (also referred to as a compleat witch), embraces her feminine nature. "A compleat witch is a woman who understands that her true power lies in exploiting the fact that she is a woman" (The Compleat Witch Pages, "What is Compleat Witch?"). She indulgences in her own fleshy delights and uses forms love magic to her advantage. As a Satanist, she is satisfied with her carnal, sensual nature and indulges in what comes natural to her as a female. In the prologue of Anton LaVey's The Satanic Witch he says "The truly "liberated" female is the compleat witch, who knows both how to use and enjoy men." A witch uses her femininity to gain what she wants by manipulating men. Any woman can employ the tactics of Satanic witchery to gain status and success, so virtually any woman who does this can be called a Satanic witch in some sense.

Love magic is an important attribute in Satanic witchery. Love magic's purpose is to attract someone. The woman makes the best use of love magic, since she is in possession of such deadly devices as a curvaceous body, physical beauty, and a natural ability to attract men. She uses such forms of magic as manipulation, and more specifically, seduction. If a woman utilizes taboos and the forbidden to her advantage a man can do nothing but crave and desire the woman employing such techniques.

One such approach a witch could use for love magic is called the "law of the forbidden." The law of the forbidden was phrased by Anton LaVey, (the founder of the religion of Satanism). His idea of "nothing is so fascinating as that which is not meant to be seen" (LaVey, The Satanic Witch 140), is very understandable in the world of seduction. That which is forbidden is also enticing and exciting. If a woman walks into a room with a button undone or a bra strap showing, a man will think she is unaware, and, just as he did when he was a boy seeing something taboo, he will get aroused. In a room full of scantily clad women, the woman portraying an innocent unbeknownst role with her garter belt or panties displayed by "accident" will gain all the attention from the men in the room. This is pure seduction at its best.

Indecent exposure goes hand in hand with the law of the forbidden, as well. It too plays into the fact that something which is not meant to be seen, is in view, and the woman who is displaying this "something" appears to not know it's showing. This would excite someone more than if she was stripped down of her clothes.

These are a few of the very potent means of seduction. Women have used this form of magic not only through things like the "law of the forbidden" but through clothing, makeup, and anything else that catches the eye. Choosing an image is important to the Satanic witch. Instead of looking at the current fashions for what is "sexy," a witch looks at what is classically sexy and what clothes make a woman look like a woman. Too often, current trends display the female form in something that neither accentuates nor embraces the female body. A witch puts the emphasis on past, "out of style" clothing and accessories that highlights her femininity and puts her curves to work. "Consider that the more physically appealing you appear to a person, the more positively they are likely to respond to you" (The Compleat Witch Pages, "Choosing an Image"). Even if a woman is not of the utmost beauty "you can excel at witchery by finding an image that is consistent with your type, and putting the focus on what you can DO rather than what you look like" (The Compleat Witch Pages, "What is Compleat Witch?"). Looking a certain way is always an effective means for seduction. A woman can easily seduce a man by what she wears alone.

Love magic comes in many forms and always causes some sort of result. A man won't simply desire an ordinary woman, unless she has used her seductress ways to enchant him, making herself extraordinary with her use of scandalous "taboos." Seduction works for those who employ it to the fullest, utilizing all the devices that come with it: looks, behavior, and enticement. A woman can have anyone at her fingertips when she has put the most effective means of love magic to use, when she has used seduction.

There have been many women who have used attributes of Satanic witchery to gain status and success. Anyone woman who has made a name for herself and acquired success by using her feminine, enchantress nature is using Satanic witchery. As was stated earlier, women like Cleopatra and Mae West make for wonderful illustrations.

"Cleopatra VII was 17 or 18 when she became the queen of Egypt" (Cleopatra, "Queen of Egypt"). Though she is thought to have been a beauty, it is known that she was of commonplace looks. However, she used her exotic imagery to gain status, as well as her ability to be a seductress to the fullest. In order to regain her throne, after being exiled to Syria, Cleopatra acquired the help of Julius Caesar, the current emperor of Rome. Because of her charm and exotic nature, she enchanted Caesar and right away they became lovers. After Caesar's assassination, Cleopatra entranced one of the new joint rulers of Rome, Mark Antony. At their first meeting, Cleopatra arrived on a barge. Cleopatra's servants were dressed as sea nymphs and cupids. "Cleopatra herself was dressed as Venus, the goddess of love" (Cleopatra, "Cleopatra and Mark Antony"). Antony couldn't resist such temptation. Though he was married to a Roman woman, he eventually made his home in Alexandria and married Cleopatra, helping her rule Egypt.

Cleopatra had done well in her use of Satanic witchery. She had chosen an image to seduce the two foreign rulers, an image of the exotic, the mysterious, and the forbidden. She seduced them, and they became enthralled with her charm. In turn they helped her to regain the Egyptian throne, as well as to rule the Egyptian kingdom. By using Satanic witchery, she was able to gain status as a ruler and as a prominent enchantress.

Mae West was a star of the stage and movies. She was born in Brooklyn, New York at the turn of the 19th century. "She was a promising child star in Vaudeville," and "as she grew older, she began writing plays of her own" (Mae West Homepage, "A brief biography of Miss West"). Her plays were always of a scandalous nature for that time period. In the incident of one of her plays called "SEX" (1926), she was even arrested. "They charged her with Obscenity and Corrupting the Morals of the Youth" (Mae West Homepage, "Mae West FAQ"). "She was always ahead of her time, constantly pushing the envelope of what was considered "acceptable" -- especially for women" (The Compleat Witch Pages, "Compleat Witches in History; Mae West"). She started her film career in 1932, and during the times of the Depression, "American filmgoers found in Mae West a risqué, independent woman, draped in jewels and enjoying life" (Mae West Homepage, "A brief biography of Miss West"). Too often, her movies were attacked for their open sexuality and "racy style of comedy" (Mae West Homepage, "A brief biography of Miss West"). An example of such comedy can be noted in her famous quotes, one of her most famous being, "Is that a gun in your pocket or are you just glad to see me?" After being attacked by the critics, Mae West withdrew from the spotlight. She continued to produce, write, and star in assorted plays and musical revues. She did return to film in her older age for a few roles.

Mae West captured the hearts of men and women alike. In Mae West, men found a "real" woman. They found a woman who was curvy and voluptuous, a woman who was not afraid of her sexual nature. Women found a role model, someone that did her own thing and took pride being a woman. Even though she was persecuted for her sexual freedom and openness, Mae West did not stop doing what she loved. She used her image of a captivating, sexy, successful woman to gain the love and respect of Americans. Her use of Satanic witchery continues to gain more admirers, even after she has died.

Although there have been many women who have used characteristics of witchery to gain success, not many of them were proclaimed Satanists. This is understandable, since the Satanic religion was not founded until 1966, and therefore it is a relatively new thing to call oneself a Satanic Witch. Since the 1960s however, many women who have chosen to indulge in the philosophy call themselves Satanic Witches.

One such lady was the ever-popular 1950s/1960s bombshell, Jayne Mansfield. At a young age Jayne had aspirations to become an actress. Not only did she fulfill this dream, but also captured the hearts of many. "Jayne only had two genuinely successful films and one Broadway hit" (Bombshells.com, "Jayne Mansfield Biography: Introduction"). However, most of her career was made up of modeling jobs, a racy, burlesque nightclub act, and numerous charming appearances for self-promotion. She also became "one of the first big stars to take it all off for Playboy magazine" (Bombshells.com, "Jayne Mansfield Biography: Taking it off"). Although she employed the techniques of a Satanic witch, she didn't become involved with Satanism until 1966. "When Jayne Mansfield asked to meet Anton LaVey in the fall of 1966, she was already established as the reigning platinum blonde in America" (Barton 94). After the meeting, Jayne became enthralled with Anton LaVey and Satanism. She already indulged in such a philosophy, and shortly thereafter, she "became a full-fledged member of the Church of Satan (Barton 95)." Eventually, "to honor Jayne's natural abilities as a Satanist, LaVey made her a Priestess of the Church of Satan" (Barton 103).

Jayne used many attributes of a Satanic witch. Many techniques she used were later included in Anton LaVey's book The Satanic Witch. Most of which included the law of the forbidden and the secrets of indecent exposure. Here are some such examples:

She had the ingenious methods for strategically weakening the seams in her tight capri pants or on the miniskirts she seemed to be bursting out of so that, when the time was right, all she needed to do was stretch a little for the seam to rip open. She did the same thing with buttons so they would pop off with a twist of her buxom body. Then it was just a matter of carefully maneuvering cloth to show a bit of bare flesh, or bare breast, or pubic hair peeking out, all apparently without her knowledge. (Barton 100)

Jayne Mansfield knew how to turn heads. She used Satanic witchery to the fullest to gain her success and fame as a widely known actress/model of the 1950s/1960s. Not only did she use attributes of witchery, but she was also a self-proclaimed Satanist. "To Jayne, it was the only philosophy that accepted her as she was" (Barton 110). She employed her curves and 40 inch bust, as well as her "self professed IQ of 163" (Bombshells.com, "Jayne Mansfield Biography: On to Fox!"), to her advantage as she accomplished her dream of being famous.

The Satanic witch is a woman who knows how to use her looks, her indulgent personality, and her seductive nature. She is strong because she uses the most effective weapon there is, herself. Women might live in a male dominated society, but it is the men that pine over women with desire and lust, while witches take authority. Cleopatra seduced two Roman rulers in her lifetime, gaining power and fame. Mae West captivated America in the early 20th century with her sexual, outgoing nature, achieving high status for a female actress of the time. In addition, self-proclaimed Satanist and Priestess Jayne Mansfield accomplished her desire of celebrity, becoming a successful beauty of the mid-20th century. These women had many things in common, they were idealistic, smart, and they employed techniques of Satanic witchery. The examples these powerful women have set should help women of today realize that as a woman she has all the power in the world. All she really needs is to understand how to maneuver her looks, curves, and intelligence to acquire success and happiness, which is easily obtained by way of Satanic witchery.

The Satanic Witch by Magistra June

When Immortal asked me to do the Satanic Witch page, I immediatly said yes. The book that Anton Szandor LaVey wrote,The Satanic Witch, is in my opinion a bit outdated. So here are my views on Satanic Witches

Introduction

A Satanic Witch is capable of doing almost anything she wants, by using her female powers. If she wants something or someone, she will go out and get it. There are a few factors that a woman should have and do that will contribute to the succes of being a good Satanic Witch. The most important thing is the inner beauty, that she uses to the fullest. Also the non-verbal communication is one of the main things a satanic witch knows how to use. Some ppl seem to think that the way they dress make them a satanic witch, but that's not important, a Satanic Witch will always be beautifull, no matter what time of day. We will now focus on the factors one by one.

Inner Beauty

As I said in the introduction inner beauty is the most important factor that a Satanic Witch uses for her own self . A woman is beautifull when she feels beautifull from the inside out, there's no use of getting all dressed up and wear perfect make-up when she feels lousy about herself. Self-esteem is projected on the outside world, and people will see right through you when you don't feel self-confidant. A satanic Witch will never allow anyone to see her weaknesses, only her strong side.Only her loved one will see her true self. How to adcieve this state of mind? There are a few posibilities. You are born as a Satanic Witch, that's the easiest of all. Like A.S. LaVey said you are born satanic you don't become one. But be realistic here, many of us were differend as a kid. Unless you had parents that were realistic about life and were satanic in there views and ideas. But if you haven't had this advantage, you had to have some kind of experience that made you looked at the world as a different person. The truth is being a Satanic Witch is a form of art, you have to have devotion and principals twenty-four hours a day, and stick to that. There's no way you can practise in this artform, you are or you are not formed as one. You can learn to have self-esteem, but that is just a beginning. You have to use this to adcieve your goals, and to be honest you have to have the talent for that.

Body Language

"And there she was, the mysterious girl with that glow in her eyes. She had never spoken to him, but the magic was there. Every Saturday night he would sit at the bar, so he could see the entrance, and every saturday night she would walk in at 11:30. Their eyes would meet and she always gave him a smile. Shivers ran down his spine everytime she did that, that smile would get him through the week. If he just found the courage to walk up to her and say hi."

Clothing and Make-up

I can tell you one thing. A man hates it when a woman puts on so much make-up that you can't see the skin anymore. Take it easy on the make-up girls! Black is fine, but black-holes for eyes are not so sensual to stare in. Red lipstick is fine, but guys just hate it when they get to a mirror and see that their face or neck is smudged. Perfum, same thing, we all have our own odour, men like that. Don't go cover it up with heavy perfums that smell like fake roses. Get something like musk or some other neutral perfum to wear. Now for the clothing. A satanic witch looks great in almost anything, as long as she feels great and sexy in it. But also think about the shape of body you have. Make it look sexy and gorgeous, and not cheap and slutty. You are not a Satanic Witch when every man wants to have sex because you look like a %#&!*%. You want every men to want you as your girlfriend, wife and friend. Sex is a different subject.

This is an example of a Satanic Witch who knows how to use her talents. Body language is so important to a Satanic Witch, that I can surly say it's one of her most powerfull talents she can use to pull the right strings. To get to this point she has to understand the male human being. She has to know how to exit him, what his ideas and weak spots are . The only way to do that is to observe, and try different approaces. Observation and patience, the key words for a Satanic Witch. Practise this and things will go into the right direction. Learn and seek your own way that works for you. One thing alot of men will confirm is the eyes, ask what they find so attractive and they will say: "the eyes caught me, like a fly in a spiders web." There's no easy way to learn to look mysterious, you just need to practise and let your inner beauty show trough the eyes.  [report anonymous abuse]  [ accepted]

Tattoos and Piercings

Tattoos and piercings are nowadays accepted as a normal thing. You can make a statement through them, and I think it's just a matter of opinion if you wanna take them or not. It won't be a flaw to take them, purity comes from the inside not the outside.

The sexual act

If you had sex with a Satanic Witch, you never want something else in your life again"

What is a "Satanic Witch"? by IMMORTAL

In my own views, a Satanic Witch, is a very intelligent, female Satanist. One who posseses the ability to obtain her every desire. They are not women who practice white, grey or black magic to recieve wisdom and materialism, but use their minds instead. Utilizing their powers for the seduction of men, is quite a powerful gift! But non theless, some do use spells to make their essence attractive, and sweet smelling.

This is called the lesser and greater magic of the Satanic Witch. As expressed by Anton Szandor LaVey, "It is a sin to aproach a female, unless the mating signal is given!" This is where magic takes its shape. The beauty of the Satanic Witch is much deeper, Aesthetics plays a large role behind the Satanic Witch, where it is a sin not to utilize this creation.

Some claim that the Satanic Witch is a gready bitch? I dissagree with the upmost respect to all of theSatanic Witch that keep our race alive. The Satanic Witch is generally not recognized as the mother to the human race, cause face it men, if we did not have our women, man and woman would cease to excist! So respect your witch for she is the fruit of our lives, and the mother of our kindred.

Knowing your position on the Synthesizer clock and learning how one's moods and situations can change that position to bring out different aspects of their personality is one. This comes in handy when there is someone on your side of the clock, for your position can shift, and so can theirs. Dont limit yourself to one set exact type, there may be many great opportunities out there to take advantage of! Learning to cater to someone's desires is very important, but some things in you, especially your appearance cannot or will not be adaptable. Focus on the other things that can be easily changed, like your environment, or the other person's desires and wishes.

Many men and woman (I don't wanna rule out the lebians and the bi-sexuels here) stated this. And it's true. Since Satanic Witches know the (fe)male body and its weakenesses, she just knows how to exit it. And get the fullest pleasure out of it. For her but also for the other party. She knows how to pleasure the body as well as the mind.  [report anonymous abuse]  [ accepted]

anonymous  May 20, 2005 5:38 AM

This is not to say that the sole purpose of a Satanic Witch is to take things from, or take advantage of men (or women). The idea is to use your lesser magic, as a Satanist, to achieve your desires. If a man gets joy from fulfilling your desires, you are not taking anything away from him, you are giving. The point is NOT to let societal restrictions sail you through a narrow path between the Scylla of Guilt and the Charybdis of Disapproval, solely for using what you have to get ahead in this world! I'm tired of listening to all the feminists complain that women aren't equal to men. Well, the truth is that we are different, and until women start growing penises and men grow breasts, we always will be. To quote Dr. LaVey, "The true test of anyone's worth as a living creature is how much he can utilize what he has." People need to stop whining about what they don't have and start utilizing what they do have. The world would be a much more productive place."The point is NOT to let societal restrictions sail you through a narrow path between theScylla of Guilt and the Charybdis of Disapproval, solely for using what you have to get ahead in this world! Here are a few guidelines for the "uniform" of the compleat witch. Though all of these elements are highlighted in Anton LaVey's book on the use of feminine power, The Satanic Witch, this is a distilled, easy-to-understand cheat sheet. These are the first steps towards distinguishing yourself as a witch, unconstrained by the common fetters of "freedom" established by our Liberated Sisters. Why should we let transvestites be the only ones empowered to flaunt the trappings of women anymore? Many of these things are talismanic; perhaps no one will see them, but they are there for us to feel, as a constant reminder of who and what we are - pioneers in the Age of Fire. Women should stop living in fear that, if they dare dress like women, they'll either get criticized by other women or hassled by creeps on the street. If our society has degenerated to such a state of lawlessness that a woman can't wear a pair of high heels in public without inviting rape, then, to paraphrase Teddy Roosevelt, Satanic women better stand up on our hind legs, dress enticingly and carry a big stick - or whatever weapon it takes to protect ourselves.  [report anonymous abuse]  [ accepted]

How should a Satanic Witch dress? (as written in the book "the Satanic Witch by Anton Szandor LaVey)

1. Skirt or dress, straight cut, above the knee -

we are the truly liberated! That means we use the power of being woman as women. On one hand, women are told to love themselves and advance toward a position of authority in society; at the same time, fashions dictate that we dress as impotent little girls, trying to fit into our fathers' oversized clothes. This is senseless to the Satanic Witch. Clingy, smooth fabrics are flattering to a woman's figure, with a belt to accent the waistline. Try to stick with classic V-neck lines.  [report anonymous abuse]  [ accepted]

anonymous  May 20, 2005 5:41 AM

2. High heels, at least

- the classic witches' shoe. Most flattering to the leg, as it creates an inviting S-curve, and a nice jiggle to your walk without even trying. If you've never worn them, don't overestimate your shoe size. If they fit like your running shoes or sandals, they're too large. Give yourself time to learn to walk in them; skip an exercize class and give yourself a real workout!  [report anonymous abuse]  [ accepted]

anonymous  May 20, 2005 5:42 AM

3. No bikini underwear -

always full-cut; white, off-white or dusty-pink; rayon or nylon (smooth-finish) panties. The bikini cut was designed for women with no curves. They are an anathema to the witch. They give no emphasis to your ample hips or pleasingly small waist.  [report anonymous abuse]  [ accepted]

anonymous  May 20, 2005 5:42 AM

4. No pantyhose -

the enemy of every witch. They are nylon pants strangling our sex, allowing for no ventilation or freedom of movement. The classic seamed stocking was designed to augment the beauty of a woman's leg, the seam tracing the gentle curves, the dark contrasting top accenting a woman's seldom glimpsed thigh. Make sure the stocking is proportioned so the top hits you just a couple of inches above the knee. No flashy colors. Beige-toned, smooth finish, seamed stockings are more eye-fetching than any purple-ribbed or paisley-flowered leg.  [report anonymous abuse]  [ accepted]

5. Garter Belt

- not the sateen-covered rings of elastic that are thrown at weddings or that teenagers dangle from their rear view mirrors. Hunt down a plain, white garter belt that goes around the waist. No frills, lace, or black and red imitation-satin "stage-undies" that are designed for one night's use. You want the 10,000 mile kind, that lasts long enough to look dingy and soiled; the kind of underwear any decent, God-fearing woman would be mortified if a man glimpsed  [report anonymous abuse]  [ accepted]

6. Vivid make-up -

use classic bright reds for your nails and lips. Eye shadow should be dramatic blues and greens. Blush should look rosy and pink, not like shades of brown and subtle earth-tones. "Tasteful" translates to "that which will make others comfortable". Don't be shy. It's to our advantage to stand out.  [report anonymous abuse]  [ accepted]

7. No perfumes or heavy deodorants

- the scent of your own flesh is enticing enough. Perfumes just irritate.  [report anonymous abuse]  [ accepted]

8. No excessive jewelry

- one ring on each hand is plenty. And you don't need to wear three or four necklaces at a time; weighing yourself down with heavy jewelry only detracts from a woman's body. You don't need to mar yourself with tattoos and piercings to get attention. More than one earring in each ear doesn't highlight your best features, it camouflages them. A nose stud just invites someone to try to wipe the booger off your nose.  [report anonymous abuse]  [ accepted]

9. No tattoos or piercings

- don't permanently brand yourself as a slave to fashion. As Dr. LaVey has said, "A woman should be a work of art; she shouldn't have to have art tattooed on her.  [report anonymous abuse]  [ accepted]

Satan

From the frontispiece of Paul Carus's The History of the Devil and the Idea of Evil (1900)

Satan is the adversary of God. Thus, Satan is evil personified. Many followers of the Bible consider Satan to be a real being, a spirit created by God. Satan and the other spirits who followed him rebelled against God. They were cast out from Heaven by their Creator. Theologians might speculate as to why the Almighty did not annihilate the "fallen angels," as He is said to have done to his other creations when they failed to be righteous (save Noah and his family, of course). Satan was allowed to set up his own kingdom in Hell and to send out devils to prowl the earth for converts. The demonic world seems to have been allowed to exist for one purpose only: to tempt humans to turn away from God. Why God would allow Satan to do this is explained in the Book of Job. When Job asks why God let Satan torment him the answer is blunt and final: Hath thou an arm like the Lord? The story of Job is interpreted in many different ways by theologians but my interpretation is that nobody knows why God lets Satan live and torment us. God is God and can do whatever He wants. Ours is not to question why, ours is but to do and die.

Satan, being a spirit, is neither male nor female. However, like his Creator, Satan is usually referred to as a masculine being. Many believe that Satan, or the Devil as he is often called, can "possess" human beings. Possession is bodily invasion by the devil. The Catholic Church still performs exorcisms on those considered to be possessed. Jesus is said to have cast out demons, i.e., performed exorcisms, and the Church considers itself to have been given this same power by Jesus. Throughout the centuries, many pious religious people have erroneously considered those with certain mental or physical illnesses to be possessed by Satan.

More frequent than outright possession, however, has been the accusation of being in consort with the devil. Satan is believed to have many powers, among them the power to manifest himself in human or animal form. The consorting has been recorded as often being purely physical and mostly sexual. For most of the history of Christianity there are reports of Satan having sex with humans, either as an Witches and sorcerers were thought by many to be the offspring of such unions. They are considered especially pernicious because they inherit some of the devil's powers.

According to Carl Sagan, accounts of diabolical intercourse are common cultural phenomena:

Parallels to incubi include Arabian djinn [jinn], Greek satyrs, Hindu bhuts, Samoan hotua poro, Celtic dusii...

(Sagan 1995, 124).

However, as a child being instructed in the ways of Satan by Dominican sisters, stories of nuns being raped by incubi in a priest's clothing were assuredly not told. The Devil was there to tempt us to sin, pure and simple. He was not there to have sex with us or engage in reproductive experimentation or breed a race of witches and magi. To be sure, his main temptations would be sexual. There was no doubt that He spent a lot of time using girls to tempt boys into impure thoughts and deeds. He would invade our minds continuously during adolescence, planting desires for sexual experiences too evil to be mentioned much less performed. I suppose, to be fair, the girls should have been taught to be wary of boys trying to get them to yield to sexual temptation and that we would use every trick in the devil's arsenal to get them to go "all the way." But the girls were taught that they were the temptresses and were therefore the ones who needed to keep from harming the boys with their female charms. We were taught to pray constantly, implore the intercession of the saints and the Holy Mother of God, that they might give us protection against the snares of Satan. It must have occurred to many observers that the fear of Satan seems very much like fear of our own sexuality.

innocent angels

For all the instruction we were given on the Evil One, I don't remember ever being taught about Pope Innocent VIII and his persecution of witches and heretics. The Pope proclaimed in a Bull that "evil angels," i.e., devils, were having sex with many human men and women. He was not the first to have made this claim. Others before him, such as Thomas Aquinas, had explored this territory in great detail. Thomas reminds us that since the devil is not human, he can't produce human seed. So, he must transform himself into a woman, seduce a man, keep the seed, transform into a male, seduce a woman and transfer the seed. Something of the devil is captured by the seed along the way, so the offspring are not normal. Apparently it took Satan a long time to figure out that if he wanted to control the world, the best way to do it would be to breed with humans. Invading our bodies would be more efficient and effective than trying to invade our minds. But the Pope and many other pious men had a plan to exterminate the diabolical offspring: they would torture and burn them all! They would fight fire with fire! The Devil would not outdo them. In fact, the sadistic and monstrous behavior of the holy and pious inquisitors is almost enough to make a skeptic believe in Satan. The inquisitors were nothing short of diabolical.

One of the more interesting aspects of Satanology is the recurring theme of humans making a pact with the devil. The Faust legend is the best-known of these: in exchange for one's soul, Satan will bestow one with wealth or power for a specified time. In most versions of the story, Faust tricks the devil and avoids payment. In the original, the devil mutilates and kills Faust at the end of the contract. His brains are splattered on the walls of his room, his eyes and teeth lie on the floor and his corpse rests outside on a dunghill (Smith, 269).

Today, there are still those who believe Satan is a real being, but we hear few stories of incubi and succubi any more. The closest thing we have to such stories are alien abduction accounts and star children. Fortunately, for today's alien abduction victims with similar tales of sexual experimentation--the devil being replaced with aliens from outer space--there is no equivalent to the medieval Church to persecute, torture, or exterminate them.

It is interesting, though, that most of these murderers and torturers feel some need to at least appear as if they are doing good while they commit their horrors. What drives the terrorist or ethnic cleanser today to their abominations, or the witch hunters to their destruction of families, seems to be the same forces that drove the pious enforcers of the Inquisitions. Their behavior is almost enough to make a skeptic think that maybe Satan does exist--in the souls of these good people fighting for their noble causes.

From a philosophical perspective, the universal belief in evil demons is based on the need for an explanation of the enormous quantity of moral and physical evil pervading human existence for our entire history. I suppose, too, that devils in some way serve to excuse our own evil actions and mitigate our sense of responsibility for the harm we do. Psychologically, demons may well be a projection of ourselves, the worst part of our nature or the most feared part of our own nature. From a literary perspective, demons must exist. If they didn't, we'd have to invent them. They seem essential to so much of our storytelling--more essential, perhaps, than their goodly counterparts.

the waning of Satan's power

As the power of the Christian Church has waned, so too has the power of Satan. It is no accident that Satan reached the peak of his career at the same time the Church did, during the thirteenth century. During the Middle Ages, the Devil was said to have built Hadrian's wall between Scotland and England, moved huge stones to construct megalithic stone circles and dolmens, built bridges such as that at Saint-Cloud and the Pont de Valentre at Cahors, for the price of the soul of the first one who crossed the bridge, etc. Satan could perform magic, but it must be remembered that the Christian religion is basically a religion of magic, of sacraments which protect one from Satan and which change bread and wine into Christ, of miracles which contravene the natural order for good or ill, of resurrection from the dead and of the promise of eternal life. Satan represents the obverse of that order: black magic, pacts with the devil, wonders done contravening the natural order, the promise of eternal youth and wondrous powers. The Satanic Order was the creation of the Church, necessary to establish its own power over the world. Heretics, witches and sorcerers were a threat to the world dominion of the Church. They had to be eradicated. As the enemies of the Church grew more numerous and more powerful, so did the reign of terror grow and so did the power of the Church get established more and more firmly.

As the power of Christianity waned as the dominant social and political force in western culture, so too did the power of Satan. By the eighteenth century, in Europe at least, witch and heretic burnings had all but ceased. Today, most of us in the Christian world would consider it primitive and barbaric to suggest that anyone be hounded or killed for communing with Satan. Even those who are allegedly doing evil in the name of Satan are usually pursued for the evil they do, not for their alleged association with the devil. It is likely that most police officers, if they had to deal with crimes committed by Satan worshippers, would view the criminals as deluded rather than as really communing with otherworldly beings.

If the rise of modern science had anything to do with the fall of the Christian Church from its position of supreme influence in western culture, then modern science can take partial credit for the exorcism of Satan from western consciousness. Of course, the Devil is not dead yet but he gets his power from God, and as God's power wanes so does Satan's. Someday, perhaps, both God and Satan will become impotent strangers to the human imagination. But don't count on it. Many theists today believe that the evils of today's world, and they are many as we all know, are due to the rise of Satan and the decrease of religious influence. If they had their way, we would all be praying more and working against the snares of the devil. I, however, think we have more to fear from these pious people than we do from the Devil or his admirers. Some might even go so far as to identify these pious advocates of constitutional amendments for prayer in schools as devils in disguise. I don't think so, though when you have God's children murdering people at abortion clinics, there really doesn't seem to be much need for Satan. In fact, if Satan and his crew returned to earth they'd find that all the good jobs for devils have been taken by the pious of the earth.

Finally, there are the modern day Satanists who find solace and power in occult magick, but especially in anything anti-Christian. They draw their inspiration from the great works of imagination in art, literature, and policy created primarily by pious Christians in their zealous wars against their enemies, but also created by pre-Christian cults such as the Egyptian cult of Set or by non-Christian occultists such as Aleister Crowley and Anton LaVey. Today's Satanists have been blamed by pious Christians for ritual murders of children, mutilation and sacrificial killings of animals, writing backwards messages on musical recordings instructing people to kill, sending subliminal or secret messages through diabolical symbols on pizza boxes or soap wrappers, causing the general decay of morals and civilization as we know it, etc. The Satanists deny it. The evidence is not very strong that the Satanists are either as evil or as powerful as their enemies say they are. There is strong evidence for the strength and wickedness of the pious. Witness their witch-hunts in recent years against child care workers and parents and relatives of children. The evidence is strong that the pious have frequently and unjustly accused many of satanic ritual abuse of children. And they have been aided in the witch-hunt by devoted therapists and pious police and prosecutors.

Thanks Joey....

I feel that even though most witches don't believe in a devil.....there are Chirstian and Satanic Witches. IMHO they (we) all have the right to think and believe how we feel...the Craft is the common thread. All beliefs are valid JMHO.

I have not done any reading on this subject but I am curious to know exactly what is Satanism?  [ send green star]
