Although there are no rigorous studies, people still use it, because it's relatively safe. I saw the drug in the clinic several times, used for mild depression. We don't prescribe it, since there are other better alternatives for depression, but in the psychiatry books it's the best option for jet lag.

In medicine, better alternatives mean substances that have been extensively studied, that have been used for a long time by doctors who know their effects and side effects. From those studies, we know that melatonin is a weak antidepressant, compared to Prozac or Zoloft for instance.

It is hard to say what substances are better, because they are given to patients according to their unique problem. As you can see in that link, melatonin isn’t even mentioned among antidepressants, but people still use it because some aspects of depression are linked to the problems of sleep. It could also be a kind of placebo effect.

I have travelled a lot...around the world a few times and the three things I always do and reccomend:
1. Change your clock/watch as soon as you are on the plane to the new location's and never refer to what time it would be if you were at home.
2. Eat light meals when travelling...lots of fruits and vegetables. I have a couple of concentrated food packages that I take with me on the plane to make sure I am getting some good nutrition.
3. Drink lots of a herbal beverage that nourishes the electrolites and helps with cleansing and of course never drink anything alcoholic as that will totally wipe you out.
I find that where ever I go I am instantly in that time zone and even have the same bad habit of going to sleep at 12 - 12:30....does not matter where I am in the world that is the time I go to sleep. I always think I will be able to use the time change to get to bed earlier but no.....
We know that Prozac and Zoloft are extremely dangerous, mind-altering drugs with unpredictable side effects. They have been linked to severe depression, insomnia, sudden mood shifts, cardiac arrest, and extremely violent behavior.
It is no secret that these drugs exist only because they are extremely profitable for their makers, lining their and their shareholder's pockets with hundreds of billions of dollars each year. As part of their marketing, Big Pharma routinely bribe psychiatrists to diagnose their patients - including our children - as suffering from "bipolar disorder" or some other convenient "disorder", then prescribe Prozac or Zoloft.

But if they had ever been "extensively studied and used for a long time by doctors who know their effects and side effects", neither Prozac, nor Zoloft would have been approved and they wouldn't exist on the market. Simple as that.
First of all, you try to move the focus of this topic from cures for jet lag to Big Pharma and how toxic are the current accepted drugs compared to natural, but weak remedies. I am fully aware of your intention.

But Fluoxetine is chemically identical with Prozac and comes with all of Prozac's documented side effects - including homicidal and suicidal behavior, depression, uncontrollable fits of rage, depersonalization, and cardiac arrest. I is also very addictive and difficult to quit. That's not what anyone in his right mind would call "relatively safe" or having "few side effects !

No, Fluoxetine is not chemically identical to Prozac. Fluoxetine IS Prozac. I used the international name of the substance. Prozac is the commercial name, and I could be suspected of advertising a product, so I decided to use the name of the active principle. You don’t seem to work in this field, otherwise, you should’ve known.
I feel you tend to see only the negative side of this subject (the horrible side effects), but not the benefits. It is true that, when you take the SSRIs for the first time, they induce anxiety and restlessness. This is a known issue and this is how the effect starts. I can explain to you why, but I fear I’d be too technical for you to understand me. We always associate an “anti-anxiety” drug during the first week or so, because we are aware of the effect.
And yes, when you give the drug to a severe depressive episode, it first gives back to that person the energy, and only later the happiness. And what does a man who is sad, but has energy? He tries to commit suicide! That’s why we keep the patients in the hospital, under surveillance. Later, when joy comes, there is no fear of suicidal ideas.
I don’t know too much about independent studies and I guess nobody has the time to check them. It is very hard to bribe everyone in FDA and all the psychiatrists in this world, so as to declare that “black” is “white”. From what I see in my clinic, SSRIs work and help people. It can’t be placebo. It can’t be suggestion.
In the end, so that this topic could move towards some constructive conclusions, if you say the antidepressants are too dangerous… what do you suggest for treating depression?

Depression, Anxiety and Panic Attacks are very common and a major cause for disability. Many sufferers of these symptoms are taking SSRI type anti-depressant drugs such as (Prozac, Zoloft, Paxil etc.) and many are looking for an alternative because of adverse side effects, or perhaps the drugs are simply not working for them. In this article, we will take a look at what causes depression, the commonly used anti-depressant drugs and the natural alternatives.
Causes of Depression: Depression is believed to be caused by a deficiency of a chemical neurotransmitter in the brain called Serotonin. The actual scientific evidence for this belief is lacking. However, as David Healy writes, there is nothing selective about the action of this class of drugs and the results of the drug on the brain neurotransmitter system can be unpredictable.
The conventional medical system considers the SSRI drugs to be effective in the short term for depression and anxiety. However, they come at the cost of unpleasant side effects such as nausea, constipation, sexual dysfunction with loss of sexual desire, inhibition of orgasm, and impotence.
The efficacy of SSRI drugs for children and adolescents is now under attack by Dr. Jon Jureidini.
Efficacy in adults is also now under question by Dr. Irving Kirsch, who describes the "dirty little secret" known to researchers that SSRI drugs response is not much different from placebo response.
Another problem is that SSRI-type drugs are associated with violent or suicidal behavior. Peter R. Breggin, M.D., author of the book, "Talking Back to Prozac", says that SSRI type drugs should not be prescribed to children under age of 18, because of suicidal behavior, suicide attempts or related behavior like self-harm, hostility, and aggression. A similar warning was issued in an August 2005 report from Europes Committee for Medicinal Products for Human Use. News media reports also suggest this problem. For example, the April 29,1999 issue of the Washington Post states that the young leader in the Columbine High School shooting tragedy was taking an SSRI-type antidepressant drug.

You might ask the simple question: wouldn't it be more logical to relieve depression by increasing the amount of Serotonin in the brain with a natural substance which has none of the side effects of the SSRI-type antidepressant drugs? The answer to this question is, Yes, this can be done very easily by oral ingestion of a naturally occurring essential amino acid called Tryptophan which is the immediate precursor to Serotonin in the brain's manufacture of Serotonin. Tryptophan is found in many foods, is safe and can be purchased at the health food store in the form of 5HTP (5-hydroxy-tryptophan) or the basic L-tryptophan which is a naturally occurring amino acid.
There are numerous medical research studies showing that 5HTP is safer and more effective than the SSRI-type antidepressant drugs. Dr. Poeldinger compared the antidepressant effects of 5-HTP to a prescription Prozac-like drug, and he published his findings in 1991 in the Journal of Psychopathology. Dosage and Safety of 5HTP:
There is a vast body of published scientific literature on 5-HTP showing its safety. The main side effect of 5-HTP is gastrointestinal (GI) upset gas, nausea, diarrhea, and cramping. The recommended 5HTP dosage is to start at a relatively low dose of 25 to 50 mg and increase gradually up to a maximum of 200 - 300 mg daily. The B vitamins are co-factors for the use of Tryptophan, so it is a good idea to supplement with B vitamins when taking 5-HTP.
There is one note of caution: Do not combine 5HTP with anti-depressant drugs unless you have medical supervision. Similarly, those wishing to reduce or eliminate their anti-depressant drugs with 5-HTP, should do so only with medical supervision.
St. Johns Wort (Hypericum):
There is a large body of medical literature showing the benefits of this herb in the treatment of depression. A recent study by Dr.Szegedi published in the March 5, 2005 issue the British Medical Journal, compared St. Johns Wort to a SSRI type antidepressant drug. One group of 122 patients received 900 mg. of St. Johns Wort three times per day for 6 weeks and the other group received the SSRI drug. At the end of the trial, Dr.Szegedi concluded that St. Johns Wort extract (hypericum extract) had fewer side effets and was just as effective as the SSRI drug in the treatment of moderate to severe depression with fewer side eff

Dosage, Side effects and Safety of St Johns Wort:
We dont really know how St Johns Wort works, but it seems clear that it works very well. When you buy St. Johns Wort supplements, you should look for a label that says it contains at least 0.3 percent of Hypericin and Pseudohypericin. The usual dosage is 300 mg to 1800 mg per day of the 0.3 per cent extract. Side effects are mainly minor gastrointestinal complaints and mild allergic reactions like itching. Because of possibility of drug interaction, St Johns Wort should not be used in combination with any other drugs or SSRI anti-depressants unless under medical supervision. The American Society of Anesthesiologists issued a warning in 1999 against taking St. Johns Wort just before surgery because of a dangerous interaction with anesthetics.
When I was a medical student many years ago, Lithium Carbonate was a popular prescription anti-depressant medication. Lithium is a naturally occurring mineral found in the water supply. The observation has been made that in the Texas counties with the highest lithium content in the water supply, you will find the lowest rates for homicide, suicide and violent crimes.
Lithium carbonate works really well as an anti-depressant. The problem with Lithium Carbonate is that the dosage needed is very high, and it requires blood monitoring to avoid toxicity. Lithium Orotate, on the other hand, is more bio-available, and safer than the Lithium Carbonate. The reason for this is that Lithium Orotate can be used at very low doses and is still effective.
Dr. Jonathon Wright, who incidentally takes Lithium Orotate himself, recommends 10 to 20 milligrams of Lithium Orotate daily as a preventive measure. Dr. Wright thinks that lithium may be useful in treating Alzheimer's disease, senile dementia, and possibly Parkinson's disease. Lithium protects brain cells from a whole variety of toxic molecules, including patent medications. It can also promote brain cell regeneration and increase brain cell mass. I agree with Lars overall... My view on drugs for mental illness or depression is that it may be useful to stabilize someone short term.. Then that person can research and find what works for them naturally, using a holistic approach and self testing, combined with the doctor giving feedback. Saying that patent drugs are the ONLY solution is kind of like saying that black is the only color that is worthy of any consideration, as it is the 'best'. Right, so what about all of the other colors in the rainbow?
There are lots of studies and plenty of research around the world that supports natural remedies and their positive effect on depression, even severe depression. Here is one, picked at random, out of the hundreds or thousands available... for any medical professional who wants to really get into this.
"In the NIMH study - published in the Archives of General Psychiatry - 46 subjects were randomly divided into two groups. One group received 90 mg per day of DHEA for three weeks, followed by three additional weeks with the dosage increased to 450 mg per day. The other group received a placebo for six weeks.
Before the trial period, at three weeks, and again at the end, researchers evaluated depression with three assessment tools: the Hamilton Depression Rating Scale, the Center for Epidemiologic Studies Depression Scale and the Derogatis Interview (to determine sexual function). When scores from these evaluations were analyzed, the DHEA group showed significant improvement in all three assessments. Every subject in the DHEA group had a 50 percent or greater improvement in the Hamilton scale, while only 13 subjects in the placebo group improved on this scale.
In their conclusions the researchers wrote that DHEA was found to be an effective treatment for mild to moderately severe midlife-onset depression."

Jet lag is in part altitude sickness, caused in part by the much higher radiation levels experienced in the jet flying at high altitudes. This is not a subject that the airlines want to talk about. Another part of jet lag is the shift in time zones, which throws off the circadian rythms that we use in our sleep and healing cycles.
Both of these plus dehydration and sitting in one spot for long periods combine to form jet lag..Why does a jet cause dehydration? The air at high altitudes is coming into jets very dry, which causes the body to lose fluids at an accelerated rate, compared to sea level air under clouds or rain.
Dehydration can be debilitating all by itself, but when combined with a weak immune system, dis-eases of all kinds can easily be transmitted inside of a jet flight.
Many people report getting sick right after a jet flight.. With anyone coughing onboard, germs are sucked into the air system. Those germs are then circulated many times. Lungs are most resistant to germs when moist air is present, and most vulnerable to infection when dried out, as in a jet.
Sitting for long periods tends to pool blood in the legs, which combines with dehydration, radiation and other factors to form thicker blood, which can lead to clots in the blood. Blood clots are another thing that can result from jet flights.
Addressing all of these root causes or preventing them from happening or keeping them from causing harm in a natural way is what I find works best for me..
You seem to be right about the side effects of the SSRIs. But I feel that the aggression, the suicidal and the self-harm behaviour speak more about a mismanagement of the drug.
St. Johns Wort is known to me and it’s an effective antidepressant, especially when you want to treat depression and experience no side-effects (when the patient has multiple diseases and you can’t afford to use the classical antidepressants).
5-Hydroxy-Tryptophan is unknown to me. However, there is a quote I found on Wikipedia that tells me why: “because alternative antidepressants exist which have been proven to be effective and safe, the clinical usefulness of 5-HTP and tryptophan is limited at present”.
Lithium is widely used, well-known, but the monitoring of the blood-levels makes the patient less willing to follow the treatment and visit the hospital often, for blood samples.
I’m not saying that the current antidepressant drugs are the only and the best way to treat depression. I’m saying that the drugs should not be seen as something toxic and be avoided when they’re needed. I’m OK with the natural remedies!
I read more about DHEA and I could find only a couple of studies on PubMed. Seems to me the substance isn’t studied too much lately, and I question why? I can imagine the answer. Even in the Skeptic's Dictionary they say that it is little known about DHEA, so they advise caution, but they can’t demonstrate if the substance does work or doesn’t:

For anyone who is reading this and is already on one of the drugs mentioned (not the natural ones), BEWARE of suddenly stopping ANY psychotropic medication! If you want off it, talk to your prescriber FIRST, don't just decide to stop it. There can be very bad consequences.
Personally, I prefer not to be taking something like that, that has such a strong effect on one's body and mind, but I'm not saying don't take them...if you really do need them.
