MUSCAT — A two-month instructional programme dealing with the entire issue of violations of environmental rules and regulations has been launched by the Ministry of Regional Municipalities, Environment and Water Resources (MRMEWR).
It will involve a series of lectures and seminars in the various governorates and regions jointly organised by the ministry and the Public Prosecution Department, beginning with Musandam.
The programme was officially inaugurated at a ceremony here on Sunday by Minister of RMEWR Shaikh Abdullah bin Salim Al Rowas.
Speaking on the occasion, Ministry Under-secretary Hamad bin Sulaiman Al Ghraibi said the ministry spared no effort to upgrade the "level of understanding between its personnel and the public.” Offences and actions contradictory to rules and guidelines set by the ministry, he added, hampered proper utilisation of resources and “therefore reflect on the national wealth of the country.”
He also explained some of the common violations. Attorney-general Hussein bin Ali Al Hilali outlined the legal aspects of environmental violations and the obstacles encountered by the ministry's personnel.
He stressed that only through joint efforts could these difficulties and obstacles be addressed. Meanwhile, MRMEWR is participating in a six-day international water desalination conference under way in Singapore.
The conference will discuss the challenges facing the global water situation, ways to solve the problem of water scarcity and the promotion of water desalting methods. “The meeting gives special attention to modern techniques in the field of water desalination and treatment,” a spokesman for the ministry said, adding: “Various methods of desalting, treatment and re-use will be presented on the basis of experiences of several countries."
The conference is organised by the International Desalination Association and attended by companies specialising in water techniques.
It is held once in two years in different countries.
